The UK’s first private navy in almost 200 years has been set up by a group of pioneering businessmen, former marines and retired captains and soldiers to defend shipping off the coast of east Africa from the threat of pirates.

They are frustrated at the inability of the Royal Navy, NATO, the European Union Naval Task Force and other navies to guarantee security for shipping in an area of ocean the size of North America.

“They can’t do the job because they haven’t got the budget and deploying a billion-pound warship against six guys [pirates] with $500 of kit is not a very good use of the asset,” Anthony Sharp, chief executive of Typhon, the company behind the venture, told the Times.

  1. Excuse my momentary lapse of civility and reason…..

I hope they kill hundreds of these “pirates”, seriously…….that area is just infested with sharks…..and were that me, and ohhhh how I wish it were me….. I would put a few rounds in below the waterline, wing a couple of the occupants to encourage a little blood flow and then sit back whilst they slowly sank, their flesh wounds ringing the dinner bell for dozens of toothy patrons to a bobbing, slowly sinking snack bar “Chez Mogadishu”….where vulgar, putrid human garbage is served up screaming and wiggling 24 hours a day, 7 days a week……

..ahhh yes, their choking, anguished dying screams, rivers of tears and unheeded pleas for help, music to my ears……..and my peels of mocking laughter ringing in theirs……the last sound they would hear…….my smiling face and my tear stained hanky waving them adieu and bidding them bon voyage the last thing they would see, as they they embarked on the quest for their 72 virgins…..you know the islamic virgins, those black eyed muslimah beauties whose hymens are gifted with the powers of regeneration…….not that muslim men favor vaginas…….those brave muslim men tend to prefer the rectums of domestic livestock, children and women,,,(in that order)…….oh joy oh bliss……..Allah be praised!!!

    Where do I sign up?

Forgive my profane intemperance……Fuck Islam and Fuck Somalia…….

  2. Sounds like adventure to me! Is there an Australian branch? Instead of twiddling my thumbs forever I’d like to do something worthwhile, especially when it involves, pirates, private navies and hot lead.

  3. I wouldnt be surprised if the RN and USN attacked them first. After all they are not protected species such as Somalis.

  4. Could this be the way forward? Private navies, private armies and so on…. When the government, armed forces and police can’t do their jobs properly then maybe it’s time for the good citizens to take the lead.

  5. Softly Bob,

You will start to see this on the streets of european countries in the next twenty years without fail. Europe and Britian will be like Northern Ireland, except instead of catholic and protestant paramilitaries fighting each other, it will be muslim and non-muslim. But i think it could be worse than Northern Ireland in terms of the violence.

AL MINIE, Lebanon, Jan 7 (KUNA) — The Lebanese Army received some 200 M113 armored personnel carriers from the U.S. on Monday as part of an assistance package earlier sanctioned in an agreement between the governments of both countries.
The agreements are aimed at strengthening Lebanon’s internal military defensive capabilities with ammunition and heavy artillery, reported local Lebanese media.
The U.S. programme is also aimed at strengthening Lebanon’s abilities to tackle terrorism and to maintain the security of its borders, while complying with UN resolution no. 1701 of 2006.

U.S. gives unstable Lebanon 200 armored vehicles

The United States has given 200 armored vehicles to Lebanon, the Lebanese army said on Monday, bolstering forces that have been struggling to deal with sectarian violence inflamed by the war across the border in Syria.

The M113 armored personnel carriers (APCs) arrived by ship to Beirut on Sunday, the army said in a statement. A Lebanese security source said the army now had 1,200 APCs.

A U.S. diplomat said the shipment of vehicles would support the Lebanese armed forces’ “capabilities and their mobility and ability to respond to crises. It is also to protect borders and internal stability”.

The diplomat, who preferred not to be named, said the vehicles were used but were all in “very good working order and will be refurbished here in Lebanon”.

The United States has provided more than $140 million in equipment and assistance to the Lebanese armed forces in the past six months, including six Huey 2 helicopters, a 42-metre coastal security craft, more than 1,000 guns – including grenade launchers — and 38 million rounds of ammunition.

  7. john joe Bob any action of this type will occcur a lot sooner then 20 years or it will be too late for it to do anything.

  8. FYI, after being retired for wounds suffered in the Sepoy Rebellion Rajah Brooke set sail from India in a leaky yacht with less the 6 friends and a one pound cannon, on the way through the Islands he ran across the villages the slavers had burned and declared war on the slavers. His actions let to the destruction of almost all of the slave trade in that region.

Actions like this have worked in the past and can work in the future.
