Saudi Arabia has signed an agreement for $1.7m in free aid for the development of mosques in the Maldives, according to a statement from the Ministry of Islamic Affairs.

The signing, which took place at the Saudi Arabian Embassy in Sri Lanka was attended by the Maldives Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Hussain Shihab as well as Saudi Arabian Ambassador to the Maldives, Abdul Azeez Jammaz.

The Ministry also stated that they will be announcing the location of the proposed mosques in the near future. The Maldives, which is spread over 1,200 islands, officially declared itself as an Islamic state in 1997 and holds a strict position on freedom of religion, banning all faiths other than Islam.

AFGHANISTAN- Saudi Arabia is set to fund a $100m Islamic centre in Afghanistan that will include a university and a mosque.

Located on a hilltop in Kabul, it will house up to 5,000 students and be named after Saudi ruler Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, acting Hajj and religious affairs minister Dayi-Ul Haq Abed told the AFP news agency.

“The agreement was signed last week in Jeddah. The construction will start next year, in couple of months or so,” Abed said.

The mosque, similar to the Faisal Mosque in the Pakistani capital of Islamabad that was also built by Saudi Arabia in 1980s, will hold 15,000 worshippers at a time.

SAUDI ARABIA – King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia has decreed that work on the proposed expansion of the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah should begin immediately so that the first phase can be completed within two years, according to Arab News.

The King visited the site on Monday to lay the foundation stone for the project, which will see the mosque building expanded to cover a 614,800m2 area. The combined space of the mosque and its plazas will be over one million square metres, providing capacity for one million worshippers within the mosque and 800,000 outside, according to the country’s finance minister, Ibrahim Al-Assaf.

The expansion will mean that 23 hotels are being removed from a central zone near the mosque.

These will be replaced by 21 new hotels, and more space will be created for housing and shopping areas.
