Russians acuse Obama of violating international treaties, arming ‘Islamist’ rebels in Syria

I can well understand how the Russians might be sensitive to this exact thing. After all, this is how Reagan forced them out of Afghanistan. However this is not the same situation and we have a much better idea of what Muslims fight for now than we did then.

Thank you Russkiy for the translation and H/T Martin for the video

  1. Turkey has US ‘teams,’ not troops

    WASHINGTON / ANKARA

Suggestions by top U.S. commanders that Washington has sent military personnel to Turkey to assist on a variety of issues, ranging from Syria to outlawed militants, should not be understood as a deployment of U.S. troops in Turkey, a senior Turkish diplomat has said.

The U.S. has at times sent teams to Turkey to assist on the issues of humanitarian zones, ballistic missile systems and Turkey’s anti-terror fight, Martin Dempsey, U.S. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Oct. 26.

Dempsey’s words came days after U.S. Army Europe Commander Lt. Gen. Mark Hertling said the U.S. Armed Forces had recently sent soldiers to Turkey and that the soldiers deployed in Turkey had been sharing intelligence, prompting the Turkish diplomat to deny suggestions that the move constituted a deployment of U.S. soldiers in the country.

Dempsey also said Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdo?an was doing a good job in fighting terrorism. “This is Prime Minister Erdo?an’s country. I cannot judge his approach. And he is doing his job well.”

Dempsey made the comments following a question over Turkey’s refusal to heed a U.S. suggestion to conduct a “bin Laden-style” operation against the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

  2. Origin of Syrian shells into Turkey unclear, US general says

ISTANBUL – It is not clear who is shooting shells from Syria into Turkey, the commander of the U.S. Army Europe and Seventh Army, Lt. Gen. Mark Hertling has said, private television channel NTV yesterday.

“We are not sure if these shells are from the Syrian army, from rebels who want to get Turkey involved in the issue or from the PKK [Kurdish Workers’ Party],” he said.

Neither NATO nor U.S. troops want to get involved in the increasingly complex Syrian issue, Hertling said, adding that they were presently only sharing intelligence with Turkey and observing the ongoing events in Syria.

A shell from Syria killed five Turkish civilians in the border town of Akçakale in the southeastern province of ?anl?urfa on Oct. 3.

  3. U.S. General: Iraq might not be an American ally

    October 24, 2012

Iraq might not prove to be an ally of the United States, said a U.S. Army general concerned about the ability of the Iraqi security forces to control the country.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen in Iraq,” Lt. Gen. Mark Hertling, who commands the U.S. Army in Europe, said during a Defense Writers Group event yesterday while discussing the prospect of a long-term relationship between the United States and the nation it liberated from Saddam Hussein’s dictatorship.

Hertling noted that Iraq “is fighting a complex insurgency,” as the Armed Forces Press Service paraphrased it. “[Iraqi] security forces are competent, but still feeling their way,” Hertling said. “They are still struggling, and it pains me to watch it,” he added later.

The general’s misgivings about the insurgency and Iraqi security forces would tend to corroborate Mitt Romney’s criticism of President Obama for withdrawing based on a timeline and failing to secure a customary “status of forces” agreement that would have kept some troops in the country to assist with security after the withdrawal.

“President Obama’s astonishing failure to secure an orderly transition in Iraq has unnecessarily put at risk the victories that were won through the blood and sacrifice of thousands of American men and women,” Romney said last year.

McCain went into greater detail than Hertling about the insurgency when criticizing Obama for portraying Iraq as a foreign policy success for his administration.

“Iraq is going to hell in a hand-basket,” McCain said. “Al Qaida has doubled there presence there. “There are al Qaida training camps in Western Iraq . . . I’ve got to hand it to the president to [be able] to say things that in my view defy reality.”

  4. Chinese Muslims fighting in Syria

Beijing- China on Monday asked the international community to be on “high alert” and step up cooperation to fight against terrorism saying that Islamic militants from its troubled northwest province of Xinjiang, bordering PoK, were in Syria and battling government forces there.

Confirming reports that the militants from Xinjiang, where China is grappling with ethnic unrest between Muslim Uyghur population and Han Chinese settlers, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hong Lei said that the Xinjiang militants were “colluding” with international terrorist groups.

“China opposes all forms of terrorism. The East Turkistan terrorist forces lead by the East Turkistan Islamic movement, (active in Xinjiang) have been colluding with international terrorist organisation,” Hong told a media briefing without directly naming al Qaeda.

[…]Earlier state-run Global Times quoted unidentified Chinese anti-terrorism officials as saying that leaders from “East Turkestan” terror organisations sending their members to Syria to participate in their quest for jihad.

[…]After receiving orders from al Qaeda, terrorists from China came to Syria to meet with jihadists already on the ground before forming groups on the frontlines, the official said.

[…]“These men came to Syria from Turkey,” said Imad, accusing the Turkish government of indulging these activities.
