Andrew C. McCarthy

Andrew C. McCarthy is the author of The Grand Jihad and Willful Blindness, both New York Times bestsellers.  His forthcoming book, Spring Fever: The Illusion of Islamic Democracy, will be published by Encounter Books later this year. He is a contributing editor at National Review and writes the Ordered Liberty blog for PJMedia.

Andy is a former chief assistant United States attorney for the Southern District of New York, and, in 1995, led the successful prosecution against the jihadist organization of “the Blind Sheikh” (Omar Abdel Rahman) for waging a terrorist war against the United States that included the 1993 World Trade Center bombing and a plot to bomb New York City landmarks. He is the recipient of the Justice Department’s highest honors, including the Attorney General’s Award for Exceptional Service, awarded by the Clinton Justice Department after the Blind Sheikh trial. He participated in several other terrorism prosecutions and, following the 9/11 attacks, supervised the U.S. Attorney’s command post near Ground Zero in New York City. He has also served as a special assistant to the Deputy Secretary of Defense in 2004, and as an adjunct professor of law at Fordham and New York Law Schools. He began his law-enforcement career as a deputy U.S. Marshal in the Witness Protection Program.

  1. I admire McCarthy’s calm, focused responses to the obviously hostile reporters questions, especially as they attempted to go off topic.
    However, there is great irony in the defense of Michelle Bachmann’s request for investigation of the vetting procedures of Huma Abedin while any request for the same vetting of the current occupant of the oval office is dropped like a hot potato.

    But it is perhaps amusing to note what significance the name “Huma” has in mythology, via Wikipedia:

    Huma

    The Huma, also known as the “bird of paradise,” is a Persian mythological bird, similar to the Egyptian phoenix, which consumes itself in fire every few hundred years, only to rise anew from the ashes. It is considered to be a compassionate bird. The touch of the huma bird is said to bring great fortune.

    The huma joins both the male and female natures together in one body, each sharing a wing and a leg. It avoids killing for food, rather preferring to feed on carrion. The Persians teach that great blessings come to that person on whom the huma’s shadow falls.

    According to Sufi master Inayat Khan, “The word huma in the Persian language stands for a fabulous bird. There is a belief that if the huma bird sits for a moment on someone’s head it is a sign that he will become a king. Its true meaning is that when a person’s thoughts so evolve that they break all limitation, then he becomes as a king. It is the limitation of language that it can only describe the Most High as something like a king.”
