CERN announces the birth of a brand new baby boson.

Isn’t this why they built it? Whats next for CERN I wonder? Are they all gonna pack up and go back to waiting tables now? What about the Tachyon, I think we need to find the tachyon. That way we can either go back in time or cover our lawns with plastic birds.

  • Physicists around the world are preparing for an announcement this Wednesday that is tipped to confirm the existence of the Higgs boson.

The Higgs boson is said to have appeared out of the chaos of the Big Bang 13.7 billion years ago and turned the flying debris from that primeval explosion into galaxies, stars, and planets.

Its formal discovery, according to a broad scientific consensus, would be the greatest advance in knowledge of the universe in decades.

But until now, in the four decades of research since its existence was first posited, no-one has claimed to have more than seen a hint of the Higgs Boson.

This may be about to change.

At 5:00 pm (AEST) this Wednesday, two separate teams at the CERN particle physics research centre near Geneva, are expected to announce that they have spotted it.

Or at least something that looks incredibly like it.

“Think of it as a smoking duck,” says Oliver Buchmueller, a senior scientist on one of the teams, the CMS.

“If it walks like a Higgs and it quacks like a Higgs, then we would have to at least consider the possibility that we have a prominent new member of the boson family on our hands.”

The Higgs Boson is a vital component of the ‘Standard Model’ – the all-encompassing 30-year-old scientific theory of how the universe works at the simplest level.

Without it, says US physicist Matt Strassler, “nothing like human beings, or the earth we live on, could exist”.

  1. I hope it is, or maybe not. The Standard Model, + general relativity is the best thing we’ve come up with, and it’s so good, it costs billions to come up with exceptions. Can humans make a “Theory of Everything” that encompasses all observed phenomena? I hope so.

  2. Higgs Bosons are great, I preordered a couple of crates, quite a while back.

Higgs Bosons by the case and free LED bulbs with every one.

  4. “Isn’t this why they built it?”

It has a number of functions but it isn’t the primary reason they built it.
It wasn’t originally called “the black hole generator” for nothing.

Higgs boson partials and quark–gluon plasma exists near a black hole.
The really interesting parts of the theory of black holes is yet to come.
I honestly doubt they can produce their ultimate goal.
