Abubakar Shekau Abubakar Shekau is the leader of Boko Haram

Three leaders of Nigeria’s Boko Haram Islamist group have been designated as terrorists by the US state department.

Abubakar Shekau leads the militant group, while Abubakar Adam Kambar and Khalid el Barnawi are thought to have ties with a branch of al-Qaeda.

The move means any assets belonging to the men in the US will be frozen, and contact with US citizens banned.

Boko Haram has said it carried out a number of attacks against churches and other establishments since 2009.

More than 640 people have died in the country so far in 2012 in attacks blamed on the group.

The BBC’s Kim Ghattas, in Washington, said the move was likely to have little effect on the three men.

She said it was more of an attempt to help stop sectarian violence in the country.

Boko Haram carried out a series of attacks against churches on Sunday, sparking a wave of sectarian reprisals.

Gun battles also broke out in Damaturu after attacks by the group against security forces.

  1. From what I am reading about this group they are even more strict to the Qur’an then Al Quada. They believe in a flat earth.

This group has been murdering for a few years now why did this take so long?

  2. It is a sorry fact Christianity doesn’t allow martyrhood bombing or euthanasia. Although the Samson narrative could be used to justify Christian martyrhood bombing, no Christians have used the weapon yet. Euthanasia is also very powerful. If you take a Muslim, and gouge out his eyes, he cannot become a martyr. Instead of virgins, he will find decades of darkness, as Islam forbids euthanasia.

My guess is because the Muslim Brotherhood guys Obama has surrounded himself with, convinced him that it is a geopolitical matter where both sides are equally wrong and has nothing to do with religion. In fact I am willing to bet on it, that this is the case.

There are other accepted forms of deception on this issue as well. But I would go with the first one above till more evidence appears of the contrary.

  4. How did it take so long? Obama was trying to get Muslim Brotherhood approval.

  5. He probably did get MB approval with the assurance that nothing more will be done.

Eeyore I think you are giving Obama too much credit, I think he knows exactly what is going on and is supporting it. If he were as incompetent as most want to think he would screw up and do something good for the US, so far the only good thing is forcing the private sector to take up the slack in our space capabilities. We won’t know the end result of that for a decade or two.
