Indonesian man jailed for two-and-a-half years for writing ‘God doesn’t exist’ on his Facebook page

An Indonesian man was jailed for 30 months after writing “God doesn’t exist” on his Facebook page.

Alexander Aan, 30, was imprisoned on Thursday for sharing explicit material about the Prophet Mohammed online.

He started an atheist group on Facebook on which he shared comic strips of the prophet having sex with his servant, a court in western Sumatra heard today.

  1. Dreadful. Then again, I suppose given the Sharia’s position on his lack of belief, he’s lucky to be alive. I’m glad that I don’t live where he does, as I’d be in precisely the same position.

  2. Once again it is proved that there are moderate Moslems (non or semi practicing) but there is no moderate Islam.

  3. In related news, that other “beacon” of islamic (or, according to The Economist, islamist) moderation, Turkey, has minted the first coins without Ataturk’s face on one of its sides.

    Just as was the case with the arrest of military officers, it’s a probe. A sergeant here, a captain there, and then high-ranking secularist generals are now getting thrown in prison by the truckload. The money probe will eventually make other coins be minted similarly, and the same will go for Turkish lira bills, until Ataturk’s face has been replaced by arabic script and the faces of Ottoman sultans (the latter only until visual representations of living creatures are banned in that country, of course.)
