Muslim girls must swim with boys: Swiss court

A Muslim family in Basel has been fined 1,400 francs ($1,550) for refusing to let its daughters participate in mixed swimming classes.

The family had sought to avoid paying the fine on the grounds that the requirement for the girls to join the swimming lesson infringed on their religious freedom, online news website Le Matin reported.

The parents argued that, in accordance with the teachings of the Koran, they wanted to instil a sense of shame in their children before they reached puberty. Mixed swimming lessons in primary school, the family claimed, would be incompatible with such an aim.

  1. If that’s how the events actually went down in Switzerland, I find this story very interesting and a bit disturbing. Let’s face it, there’s no way in hell a person should be fined heavily for insisting on such a small religious observance. You don’t force Mormons to fire up cigarettes, or make Jews eat ham sandwiches. What gives? Are the Swiss getting persnickety? Are they purposely laying out the unwelcome mat? I find it sort of mind-blowing that the state would go all the way to a $1500 fine over an objection to mixed swimming. Actually, the unwelcome mat might not be such a bad idea. I think it was, “Oh believers, make not friends with Christians and Jews” that first got me going in that direction.

  2. Despite the existence of dhimmi surrender monkeys in Switzerland, you can bet most people indeed favor such unwelcome mats when it comes to mahoundianism… Regardless of how the mainstream media chooses to portray it, as “identity crises”, “ignorance”, “xenophobia”, “islamophobia”, etc. You’d be surprised at how well-informed about islam and sharia, and how concerned about preventing that from changing their country, your average Swiss is.

  3. Chris Jones above seems to miss the point:

“I find it sort of mind-blowing that the state would go all the way to a $1500 fine over an objection to mixed swimming.”

No such thing. No blowing of minds happening here.

Western society, Europeans have collectively decided that it is in the best interest of children to learn how to swim and to do away with gender segregation. That, after hundreds of years of ignorance and objections from the churches.

Are you seriously suggesting we should throw all that over board just because Mohammedans want to take us back to the 7th century?

    I think not.

  4. @Sheik yer Mamy. I’m not missing any points, friend, although it may make you feel smart to suggest that I am. Don’t put words in my mouth in an attempt to make me wrong either. You’re just one of those people who likes to find fault and then call people wrong. I’m not wrong and I’m not missing the point. OK, Sheik Mammy? I’m saying that the Swiss appear to be putting out the unwelcome mat for the Muslims – I am not saying that other stuff that you pretended I said.

    @Proud Kafir

I think that’s the way it’s going to have to be. Once enough people actually start to get a load of what Islam really means, they will start to reject Islam on a personal level. If the governments of the world are hell-bent on filling up our countries with Muslims, then only the direct power of the people will work. Maybe the Swiss people are making it less than attractive for the Muslims to set up shop in their country. Good.

  5. I rushed to comment that I’m pretty sure there would certainly be a red carpet rolled out for them to get out from under having to pay this fine, but Sheik Yer’Mami already addressed the question.

  6. I don’t think this has much to do with this Muslim family objecting to co-ed swim classes as much as it has to do with them objecting to their daughters taking swimming lessons period. Swimming is enjoyable and as an important learned life skill, may be used to save their lives. Two reasons right there why these parents would see it as objectionable.

  7. You are right, Grace: they object to their daughters taking swimming lessons, period.

They might not object so much if they didn’t find a misguided priest to pay the fines for them.

Chris Jones claims “the Swiss appear to be putting out the unwelcome mat for the Muslims”-

Tell me please, why should the Swiss (or why should any of us) put out any mat at all to those who carry in their ideological baggage a doctrine to destroy us?

  8. Its not the size of the fine but what it means. That the Muslim parents have broken the law and need to pay a fine. They can pay the fine, or in this case paid by a Christian pastor, but if they continue to NOT send their daughters to swim, they are still breaking the law, plus in contempt of court.

The fine needs to be doubled, and doubled again, till defiance of the law AND contempt of court is removed. If doubling the fine does not make them see sense, then continued imprisonment, till they purge the contempt of court.

If they still refuse to obey the court, then it will be shown that they have no intention of abiding by the law and culture of Switzerland. Then deportation is by the far best option for all parties.

  9. I have no problem with that story in that I hope the intent is in fact to purposely lay out the unwelcome mat. It is vital that immigration policies of the western world make it clear that when you choose a country to live in, you integrate in that country. Sharia law (and defacto the Ko’ran) is not compatible with our democracies. That being said, pay the fine or leave.

  10. @sheik yer mama,

Once again you are inventing things and then claiming that I said them. What is your problem, man? I said that the Swiss appeared to be putting out the unwelcome mat for the Muslims and you are so stupid that you assumed that I was against that for some reason. Why don’t you learn how to read? I am very happy with the Swiss unwelcome mat. Now pleas stop fucking with me. OK? You’re an idiot!

  11. I don’t normally like to step in to squabbles as my dry cleaning bill is already more than I can afford and laundry machines are rare in my neck of the woods. But the Sheik is far from an idiot. He is quite brilliant actually. But there likely is a language barrier. English is not his first language or even his second. And sometimes we tend to be highly nuanced in our use of sarcasm etc.

    Just saying is all.

  12. The right to education in one’s own comfort zone is a fundamental and inalienable human right that should be available to all people irrespective of their ethnicity or religious background. Schools do not belong to state, they belong to parents. It is the parents’ choice to have faith schools for their children. Migrant Muslims are not economic slaves. They are part and parcel of British society with their own cultures, languages and faith. Migrant Muslims need to preserve and transmit their cultural, linguistic and spiritual identities; otherwise, they will be lost in the western jungle. Learning Arabic, Urdu and other community languages do not deter people from integrating. It helps them integrate. British schooling is at war with Migrant Muslims learning Arabic, Urdu and other community languages. Multilingualism should be celebrated because it is an asset but British education regards it as a problem.

We live in a shrunken world and millions of people are on the move; one of our biggest challenges is how we learn to live in proximity to difference – different skin colours, different beliefs and different way of life. According to a study by COMPAS, Muslims born and educated were given the impression of outsiders. The perception among Muslims is that they are unwelcome in Britain is undermining efforts to help them integrate into wider society. Most of them say that they have experienced race discrimination and religious prejudice. Muslims and Islam is promoted a fundamentalist and separatist by the western elite, which have negative impact on community and social cohesion. The number of racist incidents occurring in London Borough of Redbridge’s schools have reached their highest levels since record begin. Racism is the biggest type of bullying at schools in Bradford accounting for 75 per cent of incidents during the last academic year, it has been revealed.

Why is it not possible to embrace different cultures? why do we have to conform to one idoelogy. isnt that the beauty of Britain?

What are “British traditions” binge drinking, homosexuality, racism, drug addiction, incivility, anti-social behavior, teenage pregnancies and abortions and secular traditions. Muslim schools protect Muslim children from the onslaught of Euro-centrism and British traditions.

Majority of anti-Muslim stories are not about terrorism but about Muslim
culture–the hijab, Muslim schools, family life and religiosity. Muslims in the west ought to be recognised as a western community, not as an alien culture.
