Bargain holidays for Westerners looking to get a bit of sunshine and a drink by the pool in the winter could be a thing of the past on Egypt’s Red Sea coast.

The Muslim Brotherhood, which won success in the first round of parliamentary elections last month, is set on turning Egypt into a ‘sin-free’ holiday resort.

But the end of sun worshippers flying to resorts like Sharm el-Sheikh could spell disaster for an economy that has already been battered by this year’s political unrest.

Azza al-Jarf, a candidate for the Muslim Brotherhood, told supporters: ‘Tourists don’t need to drink alcohol when they come to Egypt; they have plenty at home.

‘They came to see the ancient civilisation, not to drink alcohol.’

Since its success in the first round of elections on November 28 and 29, the Brotherhood and the even more fundamentalist party of Salafi Muslims called Al-Nour have been under pressure to define their stance on a wide range of issues – including Islamic law, personal freedom and tourism.

Al-Nour has said it seeks to impose strict Islamic law in Egypt, while the Muslim Brotherhood says publicly it does not want to force its views on an appropriate Islamic lifestyle on Egyptians.

The unrest that saw former president Hosni Mubarak ousted has hit the economy hard and shaken investor confidence.

On Sunday, interim prime minister Kamal el-Ganzouri broke down in tears as he said the state of the economy was ‘worse than anyone imagines’.

Turning around the decline in tourism is key to breathing life back into the economy. The industry was also hit by two fatal shark attacks in Sharm el-Sheikh last year.

The Muslim Brotherhood came in first and Al-Nour second in the first round of voting.

The Salafis, who follow the Wahhabi school of thought that predominates in Saudi Arabia, are clear in their opposition to alcohol and skimpy beachwear.

They are also undecided on whether unmarried couples should be allowed to share hotel rooms, or the display of ancient Egyptian statues like fertility gods.

  1. Big deal… I’ve heard stories about people getting in trouble in all these mahoundian crapholes peddled as “exotic” travel destinations, be it there, Dubai, Antalya, Abu Dhabi, you name it… I would never trade a rainy weekend in Zermatt or Munich for two full weeks of fair weather in any of those places.

  2. “They came to see the ancient civilisation” at least they understand that present civilization is not worth to mention as tourist magnet.

  3. The Islamist parties want to destroy Egypts tourism industry and have been trying for decades to do so.

One of the main reasons for this is that it damages the economy. In responce to which the Islamists will be able to say that the answer to the countries economic woes is more totalitarian Islam.

That’s what the Musilm brotherhood and their violent subgroups have done in the past. The terrorist wing launches a wave of violence against tourists, tourism plummets, the economy goes bad, the parent organization of the Muslim brotherhood accuses the egyptian leadership of all kinds of corruption and presents itself as the answer to Egypts finanical woes.

Thats what they did after the tourism industry took a hit after the luxor massacre and the rhetoric they used during the arab springtime for Hitler.

  4. Egypt is going down the drainpipe fast!

Islam is what the muslims want these days and they are going to get it, until they scream for mercy. They will only learn by tasting the bitter fruit of their own violence, hatred and bigotry. I say let them have it, they deserve it!

Only the copts should be our concern.

Indeed… In their sick heads, they don’t need to worry about the loss of tourist revenue. Since they believe that nothing happens in the universe without the consent of mahound’s imaginary alter-ego allah, they most likely also believe that striving to adhere to true mahoundianism as strictly as possible will eventually, as if through magic, turn Cairo into Tokyo (as far as living standards, average per capita income, cleanliness and organization are concerned), without allah having to do as much as break some wind or pick its (not his) nose.

  6. The only prosperity that Islam seems to condone is that which is achieved through attacking and robbing an Infidel while fighting in the cause of Allah. There’s a section in the writings(which I can’t find)that counsels Muslims not to worry about the fact that Infidels tend to be richer than they are. It explains that the only reason the Jews and Christians are rich is because they choose to disobey Allah in exchange for wealth, which makes them very bad people indeed. The Believer’s reward will come later, in the afterlife. It’s like, they could be rich too if they chose to stoop to our level, in the same way that I could probably get rich if I was willing to sell crack to high-school students. Thus, the destruction of the Egyptian tourist industry is no more than the cost of doing business to a Salafist – of no more importance than the death of an infidel or the sound of two goats butting heads…

  7. What a fantastic transformation! Egypt – the country that went from ancient civilisation to pre-modern. Now back to the stone-age again! Congrats, arselifters!!

  8. Well, you can still have your wedding vows renewed in the Maldives. There that quirky Muslim sense of humor that is so infectious, everyone is reduced to laughter at the joyous event. If the new initiatives and rules fails to double the old numbers of kuffar then they will have Western tourists as well as Jews to “get a hate on for” when they are starving and looking for some one to blame.

  9. You know, if the Egyptians choose to sabotage their own tourist industry, I have no sympathy whatsoever for them. If they want to starve to death, then that is their choice. Maybe they will start to figure out that their is a price for being so utterly hostile to the rest of the Human race.

  10. I just think it would great if no more westerners gave any more money to these people. I welcome these stupid ideas. Great keep the money you western travelers and visit Paris or Milan or London.

  11. What gets me is that by the year 2016 or thereabout China will be the biggest economy. Will we start seeing Death to China rallies or will the good ol’ Death to America rallies continue. The world changes and these people head to the seventh century. I for one am glad that they will decimate their tourist industry. The less these people have by way of wealth the less they can do to us. And being a tourist in a muzzie land is posing as a sitting target in any case.

  12. The way you change your name around really gives me the creeps, man, but you do say some incredibly intelligent/innovative things at times. What, are you a CSIS agent or something? I mean, what the fuck is Western Elites Wanted Negroes supposed to mean? WEWN? NWEW? I suppose I’m too dumb to know…or something. The thought of “Death to China” rallies has never entered my ordinary mind. Of course, you could also be a Taliban Colonel. Did I mention that you creep me out sometimes?
