Could a 15 ton bunker buster that blows apart 200ft of concrete be the bomb that stops America’s adversaries from developing nuclear weapons?

The U.S. Air Force has unveiled the Massive Ordnance Penetrator – dubbed the Big Blu – and speculation is already mounting that it may be used in airstrikes on Iran or North Korea.

B-2 Stealth Bombers will use the six metre long GPS guided rocket, fitted with 2.5 tons of explosives, to smash open underground bunkers and tunnels suspected of containing weapons of mass destruction.

USAF Lieutenant Colonel Jack Miller said the service started taking delivery of the giant bomb, a staggering ten times more powerful than its predecessor the BLU-109, in September.

He added that the $32 million contract with aerospace firm Boeing would see eight of the devices delivered to ‘fulfil the Air Force’s operational needs’.

  1. One or even better several of them going off would create a small artificial earthquake that would probably bring down the roof of any bunker the initial blast didn’t destroy. Now can we get Obama to green light the bombing campaign?

  2. I love these bombs. I just hope they get used. Sometimes it is a waste creating things that never get used. In this case I am not sure they were needed in the first place. 10 older bombs that can penetrate to six feet of concrete could have done the job, but hey who am I but a big fat mamma with loving on her mind. On the issue of the earthquake, I am not sure if it is possible to start an earthquake with such a huge blast. Earthquakes require tectonic plate movement. It is possible also that the Iranians are so stupid that they never get their plans off the ground as Israel will keep destroying their computers through advanced software that not only can destroy facility operations but take control remotely of facilities or parts of them.

  3. Well maybe if several did go off at once a small earthquake could result. It certainly is an interesting line of thinking Richard.

  4. 1st the current weapons don’t penetrate deep enough to hit the Iranian bunkers, they are buried too deep and fortified to strongly.

    2nd the first bombs of this type were developed by Britain during WWII, the man who came up with the concept called them earthquake bombs. The seismic shock of their underground detonation jared the V3 super canon barrel apart, that is why it was never fired.
