India: Huge explosives haul in Ambala foils terror plot

This time, the Sikhs join in with the Muslims to try and kill random Hindus

From The Deccan Herald:

New Delhi/Chandigarh, Oct 13, DHNS:
Security agencies on Thursday claimed to have foiled a ”major terror operation” with the detection of 5 kg RDX from an abandoned car at the Ambala cantonment railway station.
“All angles are being probed, including the involvement of Sikh terrorist outfits and Pakistan-based groups”, sources told Deccan Herald.

The car with the RDX was reportedly heading towards Delhi before it was abandoned for the fear of being trailed by the Delhi Police. Sources said, based on specific information, Delhi Police sleuths were trailing the vehicle and it was said to have passed on Wednesday from the Lakhanpur toll barrier along Jammu-Pathankot barrier.

The Delhi Police alerted their Haryana counterparts about the car after which Haryana police officers, Government Railway Police and the Railway Protection Force personnel rushed to the spot.

Sources did not confirm whether any military installation was the intended target of the alleged terror groups.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the explosives seemed to be meant to target Delhi during the festive season. Delhi Police Special Cell officials said that the explosives appeared to have originated from Jammu and Kashmir.

The explosives have been sent for forensic tests and a team of National Security Guard (NSG) from Delhi has been rushed to the spot, police said, adding the nature of the explosives was also being studied. Personnel from the National Investigation Agency have reached the spot to probe the incident.

Security agencies are scrutinising the CCTV footages available at various toll barriers in Punjab and Haryana through which the car may have passed, sources said.
The Haryana Police found the registration number of the Indica — HR 03 0054 — to be fake. According to reports, originally, the number belonged to a car owned by a businessman named Rahul from Panchkula, near Chandigarh.

The CCTV footage, according to police, showed the car had two occupants. The police is now trying to verify the details and hunt down those who drove the car to Ambala cantonment, which is along National Highway No 1, about 200 km from Delhi.
However, the entire sequence of the operation that led to the recovery of the RDX has exposed the Haryana police’s “inefficiency”.

The state police late on Wednesday evening were alerted by the ATS with specific inputs that an Indica car bearing registration number HR-03R-00054 was planning to enter Haryana and needs to be intercepted. Despite these specific inputs, the suspects in the car managed to enter the state boundary after paying toll tax.

Even as the security ‘nakas’ were put up at all entry exit points and highways, the state police could not detect the entry of the car into Haryana. The state intelligence gathering mechanism too was clueless of RDX being driven to the national capital.

Sources said late in the night the Haryana police along with the railway police conducted extensive search of the car once it was abandoned and located inside the parking premises of the railway station. The station is in close proximity to the Chandigarh-New Delhi national highway.

At the end of the search, they found nothing inside the car. It was only after the Delhi police insisted for a re-examination of the car that the 5-kg RDX was recovered. The car was handed over to the Delhi police this afternoon and transported to the national capital to carry out further extensive forensic and other investigations.
