Group of Australian Jews lobby to make Jewish religious zone, pissing everyone off in the process.

This is such a bad idea. I do have a suggestion though for the woman who wants to go out on a Saturday. Try the following. Go out on a Saturday. The only thing stopping you is imaginary authority. You do not have to obey it, and if you do not there are no measurable consequences other than what men might do to you who want you to obey these non-laws.

So just get up and leave the house. And if you want to obey this Jewish law, then don’t find some work around by creating a god-zone. That is equally offensive frankly. You want to obey Jewish law by breaking Jewish law using some Jewish zone work around. Either stay at home or leave the house but don’t involve the whole neighbourhood.

  1. Dear Vlad Tepes

    This video is misleading.

BASICALLY, an Eruv allows you to carry objects or push baby strollers on the Sabbath in public spaces. Under Jewish Law you are not allowed to carry on the Sabbath in public spaces. The laws of the sabbath are derived from the construction of the Tabernacle (in Hebrew the Mishkan) done by Moses and Jews of his generation.

What is implied in the video is that a woman is not allowed to go outside. It is not true. What the Jewish woman in the video wants to do is to carry or push (in stroller) her children outside or to carry food to neighbors. The men want to carry prayerbooks or their glasses.

It could be true that the non-Jewish residents could be objecting about some of the alterations and poles that the Eruv Commitee are constructing. However, an eruv’s borders are mostly natural (rivers, streams, ravines and …etc) and can be Telephone poles, train tressels, or overpasses (to name a few).

About the armed guards. The Jews in this town wouldn’t need them if there wasn’t a Islamic threat.

Vlad Tepes, please write me if you have any questions. I think your comments are misleading.

  2. I accept your comment as factual. But it doesn’t change a thing. These people are still creating a special Jewish zone, at least it is perceived to be such, as a work around for rules which they don’t have to obey anyway. She could just go ahead and carry food or push a stroller. She doesn’t need to obey these draconian religious laws. If she wants to obey them, then obey them and don’t look for a work around. It is also not a good time to be asking for things like this, as Muslims are creating Muslim only areas which are genuine threats to the peace and civilization itself using these sorts of things as precedents.

  3. I am Roman Catholic and live in the northeast US. About ten years ago a large orthodox Jewish community moved into our decaying city of about 110,000. Our property values were way down so they could come in and buy big, old houses for very little. They also “adopted” two synagogues in my neighborhood that had been abandoned by the former Jewish community, which had dispersed and moved to the suburbs. They erected an eruv, which is unnoticeable by anyone who isn’t Jewish and looking for it and they’ve proven to be good neighbors. Perhaps because we don’t live in an “upper income” area, the eruv didn’t cause any problems at all. For the most part they used existing telephone poles. In contrast, for perhaps 50 years our population of Albanians has steadily increased to the point that we have the largest group in the US, possibly even outside of Albania. From being completely invisible, they have now converted an “Albanian Community Center” in my neighborhood into a mosque, complete with minaret. The buildings name has been changed to “Islamic Cultural Center” and it now has high fences around it and “No Trepassing” signs. I saw an iman, complete with robe and signature turban entering it the other day. They are attracting other moslems and have just opened a halal grocery (that also sells cold beer!) and a halal pizza/donut shop. I see increasing numbers of hijabs, and even burkas, regularly. Which group am I afraid of? Which group do I think threatens me, my children, and my way of life? I can live side by side with the Orthodox Jews, even though we don’t mingle, but I want nothing to do with the moslems. And your Albanian picnic video just about says it all.

  4. Barbara, thank you for your comments.

    Dear Vlad Tepes,

I think you should use some critical thinking. First of all, the press lives off of conflict. If they can create one, so much the better. That is SOP (standard operating procedure–pun intended) with the US press. Their bread and butter is either ratings or selling newspapers and ad space. I’m sure it is true here.

Second, these “work around rules” are not. They have been hashed out and argued about for over 3000 years. A work around rule starts with a goal. For example: we want a housewife to be able to carry her six month old outside on a sunny spring day. Are there any nuances we can exploit? Take my word for it, nothing in Jewish law approaches a problem this way or is any problem in Jewish Law is solved in a vacuum. It starts with what G-d wants. I’m sure that the housewife you saw in the video volunarially wants a personal relationship with G-d, which is the reason why she would rather stay in the house with her kids than to carry them outside on the Sabbath without an Eruv.

To give you a complete view of this you should read Maimonides book , The Guide for the Perplexed. You’ll find that Judaism is more akin to Aristotelian Philosophy.
Maimonides explains the differences in his book.

How much better the world would be if there were more G-d spaces on this planet. Spaces that are refined and prosperous that allow G-d to dwell among all humanity.

  5. If these people are serious about establishing this zone, then I would be alarmed about it.

Yet, if this was a way of showing the Australian government what is really happening wherever Muslims settle in large numbers, then the point has not been clearly understood.

When Muslims pray in open streets in large numbers, they are creating a Muslim-only zone. When they build a mosque, all the land beneath it and around it is seen as a Muslim-only zone. When they build madrassa schools, interpretive centers and other places where Muslims are pretty much the only people who are welcome, they are creating Muslim-only zones. When they settle in vast numbers, attempting to change local laws to adhere to sharia law, they are creating Muslim-only zones within the laws.

This is the reality that the west faces when dealing with Muslims and Islam.

So why is it any different when Jews want to do the same things?

Are we afraid that the Jews will suddenly fly planes into buildings or bomb train stations? Are we afraid that they will want to take hostages at hotels or schools full of children? Are we afraid they will enforce their laws on everyone else to establish a “universal synagogue”?

Nope. We are only afraid that this will set a dangerous precedent that the Muslims will take to heart all over the world. That is the only reason why this outrages everyone.

  6. RR West: Its worth noting that this is NOT a Jewish only zone. It is a real zone where there is a work around for imaginary Jewish rules for Jewish people. As I understand it now, there are these ‘Erev’s all over the place and no one other than religious Jews have any idea they exist at all as it makes zero difference to non-Jews and for that matter, non religious Jews at all. Its just a pretend zone for pretend rules.
    Stupid, but not dangerous.

  7. Dear Eeyore,

Here is a productive area of study for you: The Seven Noahide Laws.

Here they are in a nutshell:

    1) Not to Blaspheme G-d.
    2) Do not murder.
    3) Do not steal.
    4) Do not engage in forbidden sexual relationships (inscest, homosexuality…etc)
    5) Do not worship idols (like the greek pantheon, the government…)
    6) Eat the limb torn from a living animal.
    7) Set up courts of justice to enforce the above six laws.

Isn’t it interesting Eeyore that the left are always insistant on doing the opposite?

  9. Doc Holiday:

First you should know, that the good Dentist Holiday is one of my favourite literary/historical characters. Excellent choice for a nickname.
Secondly most lefties I know are vegetarians. So not so much rule #6
I can see what you mean about the rest though.

  10. There is a typo on 6. It should read “Do not eat the limb torn from a living animal.”
    Thank you for the compliment.
