Another question from the internet. Amongst the cyber-community…
[00:00:04.06]
that by hundreds addressed the site of TF1…
[00:00:08.14]
to discuss the themes we have raised tonight, we had one earlier…
[00:00:15.74]
another difficult one now. It is related to immigration. I ask you the question:
[00:00:19.80]
Mr. President that multiculturalism is a defeat…
[00:00:23.89]
and is the origin of many problems in our society? And
[00:00:27.94]
So says Angela Merkel, it’s a defeat last week.
[00:00:32.01]
And Great Britain. What do you think of that for France?
[00:00:36.09]
My answer is clearly yes truthfully it’s a defeat.
[00:00:40.15]
It’s within all our democracies…
[00:00:44.23]
we have preoccupied ourselves with the identity…
[00:00:48.25]
of the person that was arriving…
[00:00:52.30]
but not enough of the identity of the country that was receiving them.
[00:00:56.41]
I will explain myself.
[00:01:00.46]
Very well we have to respect everyone within their differences…
[00:01:07.16]
But we don’t want in any case, it is not France’s project …
[00:01:11.26]
to make a society where communities coexist one beside the other.
[00:01:15.29]
If we come to France,
[00:01:19.35]
we accept to melt within one community…
[00:01:23.46]
that is the national community.
[00:01:27.50]
and if we do not want to accept this, we cannot be…
[00:01:31.57]
welcomed in France. Countries like …
[00:01:35.67]
England or the United States that thought about developing …
[00:01:39.70]
this multiculturalism which means community by community…
[00:01:43.78]
has reenforced the extremists…
[00:01:47.90]
everyone forgetting they belonged to a national community …
[00:01:51.94]
to develop its defense against others. We do not want…
[00:01:56.09]
any of this. We do not want any of this.
[00:02:00.12]
And these are perfectly clear things. I share the opinion…
[00:02:04.14]
That Mrs Merkel and Mr. Cameron, we cannot have this.
[00:02:08.21]
It poses the question, obviously, that comes…
[00:02:12.27]
Let’s not do the wooden tongue…
[00:02:16.33]
The question of Islam, and our…
[00:02:20.42]
Muslim compatriots, it is asked and refuses …
[00:02:24.45]
to evoke this with the pretext …
[00:02:30.81]
that extremists from all sides can take hold of the question…
[00:02:34.91]
by refusing to speak of it. There is clearly a problem.
[00:02:39.04]
My position is the following: Our compatriots…
[00:02:43.10]
Muslim, must be able …
[00:02:47.26]
to practice their religion…
[00:02:51.28]
like any other compatriot, Jews, Protestants…
[00:02:55.34]
Catholic, but, …
[00:02:59.44]
It can only be an Islam of France…
[00:03:01.10]

[00:03:05.18]
It cannot be an Islam in France. This is not possible.
[00:03:09.21]
This is what brought me to vote …
[00:03:13.27]
for the law that outlawed the Burka. We do not want…
[00:03:17.39]
…In France women that wear the integrated veil
[00:03:21.41]
We do not want in France…
[00:03:25.49]
that we pray…
[00:03:29.54]
in an ostentatious way in the street. But we say …
[00:03:33.57]
in France that it is perfectly normal that there are places of cults and…
[00:03:37.63]
mosques so that our Muslim countrymen can practice their faith…
[00:03:41.77]
We are a secular country.
[00:03:45.82]
There is a separation between religion and state…
[00:03:49.88]
the prayer offends no one.
[00:03:54.02]
but we do not want on the territory of the French republic…
[00:03:58.05]
the proliferation of aggressive religion.
[00:04:02.13]
willful
[00:04:06.16]
Whichever one it is. Naturally whichever one it is. But Mr. Perneault…
[00:04:10.21]
I think there is a formidable hypocrisy…
[00:04:14.32]
to refuse to see a certain number of realities…
[00:04:18.37]
in France. I say it…
[00:04:22.45]
even though I have always been opposed…
[00:04:26.56]
to zero immigration. That makes no sense.
[00:04:30.68]
even though I think that declarations from such and such extremist leaders…
[00:04:34.76]
make me feel ashamed…
[00:04:38.90]
I say as chief of state, I am one of your compatriots.
[00:04:43.88]
I am of your faith even if your faith is not a faith.
[00:04:48.00]
but, if we come to France…
[00:04:52.05]
we bring its identity to the national community but we…
[00:04:56.15]
respect the national community and the French national community…
[00:05:00.17]
does not want to change how…
[00:05:04.21]
it lives. Its lifestyle, the equality beteen people…
[00:05:08.31]
liberty for women, we do not want to compromise on this.
[00:05:12.33]
Little girls get to go to school…
[00:05:18.87]
We do not want for example, that imams can preach violence.
[00:05:22.99]
We do not want, we do not want.
[00:05:27.13]
It does not exist. We do not want to modify our calendar…
[00:05:31.62]
we consider religion imminently respectable…
[00:05:35.74]
it is part of private matters. Not public…

3 Replies to “Sarkozy speaks to the press about Multiculturalism and Islam within France.”

  1. He is saying the right things, now if he will carry through with policies that support his statements.

  2. More of the EU political class ‘seeing the light’, or is it a ploy for them to stay in office. It’s no secret that the common man” has had enough, is mad as hell and isn’t going to take it anymore”.

  3. As long as the walk the walk as well as talk the talk does it matter if they have seen the light or are just faking it to stay in office? Granted having someone who really believes in office would be better but we don’t live in a perfect world. As Ben Franklin said revolutions come about like Bastard children, half compromise and have improvise, he said this about the maneuvering to get the Declaration of Independence passed.
