A senior Hamas figure said a statement by Gaza-based Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh that the group would accept the result of a public referendum on peace with Israel, even if the result were against Hamas’ interests, had been misunderstood, Xinhua reported Jan. 12. Mahmoud Zahar, the senior figure, said national principles cannot be put up for a vote.
Did this surprise anyone? Everyone knows that the Arabs will not accept any peace settlement that allows Israel to exist.
