The Sharia Shack: Toronto halal restaurant seats women in separate section.

This story first came to light when posted on Small Dead Animals, one of Canada’s more influential blogs, thanks to a reader who sent in the photograph. It appears the owners and operators of Juba Restaurant feel perfectly comfortable applying sharia standards in a public establishment. Canadian values do not support gender segregation; men and women are considered equal in all aspects of life, with legal statutes firmly in place reflecting this societal value. Sharia law considers gender mixing unIslamic, so it stands to reason that the good Muslims over at Juba’s sharia shack would defy both the value of gender equality and the laws supporting it.

Purdah, the separation of men and women, is based upon the central theme of Namus (honour) and is expected in public in many Islamic countries. Religious Saudis believe it is forbidden for a woman to eat in public as part of her veil would have to be removed to do so, revealing her face which would compromise purdah. For this reason, segregation is especially strict in restaurants and it is common for establishments to have defined areas for women only often marked as “family” and “women section only”. It is common to see western restaurant chains with both separate entrances and seating sections as they too, must abide by sharia standards. This McDonald’s in Riyhad comes complete with a segregated section where women must sit in the “family” section.

Sharia law is not legal in Canada. and this is not Saudi Arabia, Iran, Pakistan or any other country where sharia is the standard. This is Canada where Islamic law finds little, if any respect.

I might add, restaurants in Canada have been declared public property, and that was the entire basis for the now nation wide smoking bans. If a restaurant is considered public property, even though I do not believe it is, for the purpose of social engineering, then surely the kind of gender apartheid, (using the word correctly for once) being applied in this restaurant must be illegal and certainly should be stopped. This will only encourage Muslim men who are trying to make certain that women from Muslim nations will not and cannot integrate into Western society, and make it that much easier to force them to standards here in Canada, that should not apply even in the Islamic Magreb.

  1. A ruling in the summer of 2009 in New Jersey favored a Muslim man who took his wife against her will. The judge said that this was OK because his ‘religious’ law (Islam) allows it, so he was acting in good faith. This ruling was overturned this past summer. (2010)

This is only one of numerous issues that are being argued within Islam today. Another is: Can a man beat his wife?

I would have thought that these issues were long settled in this country. As seen in New Jersey, bringing in Islamic law will allow for a new discussion on these issues.

WHY would we want to discuss ANY of this?

  2. I don’t think anything will be done, the Moslems are the current favored “minority” of the left, what should be driving people away from both is the way the left and the militant feminists are going along with the Moslems oppressing women.

Sadly, we must be willing to discuss these perverted ‘laws’
that exist in sharia as they come up again and again here
in the states. We must be not only willing but we must be
committed to defeating islam and sharia law, no matter
how long or violent it might become. One only has to cast
eyes upon England to see what our future will be if we do
not stomp out islam and sharia NOW, in the next few years.

I wish we did not have to confront this but islam is like a
malignant cancer, it spreads and kills any and everything
closely resembling freedom and free individual thought.
We owe to our children first, and then to us in the present,
    here and now.

VT, thanks for doing such an incredible job. I will be sharing
    with links back to here.

  4. If someone chooses to have a restaurant where women are seated separately out of a choice of the customer, than what’s the harm in it. Whether or not Sharia is legal or not in Canada has nothing to do with it. This has to do with private enterprise having private policies. I am a rugged dark skinned male with a beard and when I walked into a “Curves” franchise looking for my gf, the lady stopped me at a wall that had a door and said, “it was against their policy to let men in as their customers preferred to me in a female only environment.”

I didn’t cry and say PLEASE LET THE STATE WALK INTO THIS CAPITALIST ENTERPRISE, you communist whiner.

  5. There is a difference between a restaurant and a gym, and I believe that there are non discrimination laws in Canada that forbid the segregation because of race or sex in public places, and restaurants are considered public places.

  6. Sharia standards should not be tolerated in Canada. Providing separate areas to check the ID for niqabis by women only staff in airports and voting stations which are public places, are other accommodations that feed sharia’s gender-segregation, as does separate seating sections for men and women in a public restaurant.

As a woman, the choice I have regarding this restaurant is to either accommodate sharia standards or don’t go in.

  7. Grace Shiria is one of the ways that the Moslems take over a nation, they start small by saying this law applies only to Moslems and then as they grow stronger they start insisting that all others have to follow it.

  8. Darwin awarad to those city council ladies. (dressing in pink to protest Don Cherry Dec.10/10) How easy it is to protest a non-threatening mark like Cherry. While they twitter and strut sanctimoniously in their little pink outfits, Juba Restaurant, the halal restaurant practices gender apartheid by enforcing purdah, the forced segregation of men and women. This is Canada! This is against the law! Someone gave these owners a permit, councillors! Aren’t permits the jurisdioction of city hall? What? No pink demos against this travesty from these pink clad powerhouses?
Sooo brave, protesting Cherry but scared to death to challenge true tyrants who are the real threat to our way of life and liberty.

  9. The left never protests anyone that might get violent, they have enough self preservation skills to know not to do that.

  10. The Chick Felay LaRosh opened his doors after leaving his Nando’s franchise many years ago. It’s also a good place for eating Halal food and they have also separate sections for family.
