Muslims demand apology for New Zealand minister’s joke

WELLINGTON — New Zealand’s Islamic community has written to Prime Minister John Key demanding an apology for a joke one of his ministers made about Muslims, the Dominion Post newspaper reported Saturday.

The president of the Federation of Islamic Associations New Zealand, Anwar Ghani, said Muslims were “very upset” about the remarks made in a speech by Building Minister Maurice Williamson.

“We brought it to the notice of the PM saying that what was said was highly inappropriate and the minister should be reprimanded and apologise,” Ghani told the newspaper.

Williamson cracked a joke about Muslims and the practice of stoning while giving a speech at a building industry awards ceremony last month.

Ghani said he did not think comments centred on religious intolerance were commonplace in New Zealand, but this issue was “a big problem because it was uttered by someone who is regarded as being responsible and a public figure”.

A spokesman for the prime minister confirmed the letter had arrived and was being considered.

  1. So, Ghani was ‘upset’ was he? Well, if he was one of these alleged ‘moderate Muslims’ about whom we hear so much yet hear so little from, why didn’t he say that he was ‘upset’ because as a Muslim he found that the practice of stoning was barbaric and went against his religious principles? The answer is obvious: Ghani supports stoning and thinks that it’s entirely legitimate, but finds it inconvenient that Williamson has reminded people of Islam’s ugly reality.

  3. Why would somebody be offended by a joke about Kiwi’s who use drugs and have sex? (Don’t answer the question, it’s only rhetorical) Why would anybody be offended by a joke about muslims who stone a mature person after having sex with an other mature person. Not the joke is offensive, but the act of stoning is offensive! Talking about muslim rituals may invite people to think about the subject.

    And there is the real worry for the muslims! Stoning people is against human rights. And muslims are sick animals who can’t face reality and are offended by the truth!

  5. That whining sharia freak needs to get a life, if he chooses to live in a civilised country. As out conservative expat blog Ross’s Right Angle said about Williamson this weekend, ‘The guy was not saying that all Muslims go around stoning people, any more than he was saying that all his own compatriots are perpetually engaged in infidelity or binge-drinking. It was a joke, for God’s sake. Laugh. Or is that asking too much these days?’

  6. New Zealand is a wonderful country. But years of a Labour government has resulted in the same scene as in the UK – overflowing with Muslims posing not just a security threat, but their mores and customs are a blight on the physical and social landscape.
