United Nations human rights specialists have expressed concerns over November’s anti-minaret vote and “discriminatory” poster campaign in Switzerland.

The comments by the Geneva-based UN Human Rights Committee were made in conclusions on Swiss progress in implementing the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), which is monitored by the body of experts.

Switzerland should “strenuously ensure respect of freedom of religion and firmly combat incitement to discrimination, hostility and violence”, the committee declared.

Among other recommendations, they said the Federal Commission against Racism should be strengthened to investigate all cases of racial discrimination and incitement to national, racial or religious hatred. Otherwise, an independent mechanism able to initiate legal action should be set up.

The committee said it was also preoccupied by reports of police brutality against people arrested or detained, in particular against asylum-seekers and migrants.

It said all cantons should create an independent mechanism to investigate complaints against the police. Ethnic minorities should also be better represented in Swiss police forces, it added.

While recognising the Swiss authorities’ “sustained attention” to human rights and measures undertaken since the last progress report in 2001, the body urged Switzerland to lift its remaining reservations concerning the treaty, to ratify the Optional Protocol – which establishes complaint and inquiry mechanisms – and to create a national human rights institution.

Other specific recommendations focused on better protection and support for asylum seekers, firearms, assisted suicide, combating violence against women, and compensation or reparations for forcible castrations and sterilisations conducted between 1960 and 1987.

  1. I tried to publish the following comment on one such article at Swissinfo not too long ago… Of course, they didn’t approve it:

Just as when Europe decided to ignore Sir Winston Churchill’s against nazism, with which, along with fascism and communism, islam has much more in common than with Buddhism, Sikhism, Hinduism and Christianity, preferring to listen to Neville Chamberlain instead, these poll results seem to show that most Swiss are either ignorant of the threats facing democracy and human rights in Europe, or simply don’t care enough about this issue; that they prefer to listen to the Chamberlainesque statements of the Federal Consuls rather than confront a menace before it’s too late. And, by the way, Sir Winston Churchill didn’t only try to warn Europe against the dangers of nazism; he also had the following to say about islam: “How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property – either as a child, a wife, or a concubine – must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men.
Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities. Thousands become the brave and loyal soldiers of the Queen: all know how to die. But the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world.”

  2. Yeah, that was about a poll showing that most Swiss would REJECT the proposed ban. I still hope that turnout on the side of those in favor of the ban will end up helping it pass, even if polls show that the surrender side might still have an edge… After all, why would any sane European turn out to vote in favor of appeasing mahoundians?

  3. The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), and the UN Human Rights Committee (UNHRC) which monitors compliance with it, function as islamist front organizations. This is because none of the following muslim countries have signed or ratified the ICCPR: Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Malaysia or United Arab Emirates.

The UNHRC lectures Switzerland on freedom of religion. Meanwhile, the Saudis prohibit Christianity, Jews, Buddhists, churches, temples, priests, bibles and crosses etc. They also torture and murder anyone who preaches or converts to other religions. The Malaysians treat non-muslims as second class citizens by making them pay a “non-muslim” tax.

So the UNHRC fights for the freedom of Islam to spread into other countries, while allowing Islamic countries to go scot-free as they brutally persecute other religions and shut them out. It’s hypocritical BULLSHIT, and the UNHRC members should be egged and shouted down the next time they appear in public.

NO RIGHTS FOR ISLAM IN WESTERN LANDS, UNTIL ALL RELIGIONS HAVE RIGHTS IN MECCA

No arguments from me on that score, but we also have the left to blame for often making concessions that weren’t even asked for.

  5. If the UN is so concerned about descrimination why have they said NOTHING about the ongoing attacks on coptic Christians in egypt?
I really dont understand why anybody bothers with the UN anymore,a tool of islamists and black racists.

  6. Decades of leftist indoctrination of hatred of freedom and government unless its the UN or some third world tyrant?

  7. Lots of voices comment the swiss anti minaret vote as violation of religious freedom, anti muslim action and god knows whatelse…However, I never heart a voice from the muslim world , asking themselves , why a democratic nation in its majority made such a vote. I share to a large extend the above remarks of jxcarl: As long as muslim nations refuse equal treatment and liberty of religion in their countries, as long as they do not unambigously condemn terrorism in the name of Allah, as long as they maintain rules hostile to basic democratic principles , as long as they continue to persue the sharia….the swiss vote is more than justified and represent a clear sign that islam is not (no longer ??) welcome unless it behaves vis a vis other religions/opinions/principles as it expects to considered by them

  8. Here is the thing of it. Law makers are human beings and fallible as such. They are almost certainly going to run the following equation:
If we, the Swiss Supreme court do not overturn this ban, Arab oil money will flee our banks, Muslims worldwide may interfere with our interests financially and in terms of the security of our people and institutions both private and government overseas, and Muslims will likely riot and create chaos in our cities. If we the Swiss Supreme court DO overturn this ban, 57 % of our Swiss people will be anoyed for a while and we can buy them off at the next election. Panum et circii panum et circii. So you see…
We have a problem in our democratic process.
