An evening with Daniel Pipes in Toronto

The newest schism in the counter-jihad seems to be based on the notion that Islam is inherently antisemitic, or inherently violent and with a central dogma of jihad for manifest destiny or is it some odd modern offshoot of Islam that started after WW2 and has created all the problems and the solution is to fight that and embrace the other.

Daniel Pipes and a few others went to speak in Toronto at a synagogue representing the second set of positions more or less. The audience did not take to it very well. I will post the speeches as I get them. For now, the Q&A after the lecture is quite interesting. Daniel Pipes makes what at least appear to be disparaging remarks towards Pamela Geller, who has done rather exceptional work in terms of preserving freedom of speech within the US and winning important victories as well as at least publicly presenting the case that Islam and its influence in the Western world has a negative impact. She was one of the first to do it, and do it under her own name. The audience did not take well to that either.

Daniel Pipes world view Vs. Andrew Bostom.

I havent followed this quite as closely as I should have. So I may have some of the subtleties wrong in terms of what Mr. Pipes is selling.

As far as I can tell, he has two basic points he wishes people to accept.

1. Antisemitism is not inherently islamic but the province of some modern post-state-of-Israel variant of islam and is a consequence of the creation of this state.

2. The horror we see everywhere from muslims operating on scripture and instructions from various islamic authorities and scripture, are not really the religion of islam so much as that variant and perhaps certain organizations such as the muslim brotherhood etc.

Not wishing to get into the ‘True Scotsman’ logical fallacy, here are some info bits that may or may not help the uncertain make up their own minds.

Remember, The Grand Mufti of Jerusalem was operating for decades before the creation of the modern state of Israel by the U.N.

PIPES: My view is that anti-Semitism of this sort is historically a Christian phenomenon, but, in the course of the past two generations, as a result of propaganda coming out of the Egyptian government, the Iranian government, the Iraqi government, the Saudi government of this sort, it has become pervasive.

A recent spate of killings in the United States of non-Muslims by Muslims has gone unnoticed by the major media. Here are four cases I know of:

Feb. 5: Yusuf Ibrahim, 27, Egyptian born and living in Jersey City, stands accused of shooting, then cutting off the heads and hands of two Copts, Hanny F. Tawadros and Amgad A. Konds, and burying them in Buena Vista Township, New Jersey. He is charged with two counts of murder and with desecrating human remains. He is also wanted for a Sep. 20, 2012, armed robbery in Jersey City in which a victim was shot in the foot.
