“British troops are to be sent to support Nato operations in Kosovo, the defence secretary has said.

Sir Michael Fallon said about 30 soldiers would travel early next year to join the Nato Kosovo Force (Kfor) on a 12-month deployment.

He said “significant security and stability challenges” remained in the western Balkans…”

  2. Guantanamo: Former inmate Jihad Diyab ‘to leave’ Uruguay (BBC, Oct 23, 2016)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-37742809

“A former Guantanamo Bay prisoner who went on hunger strike in Uruguay to demand relocation to another country has ended his protest after receiving an offer, his supporters have said.

Jihad Diyab, a Syrian, was one of a group of six Guantanamo detainees who were given asylum in Uruguay in 2014 as part of efforts to close the camp.

He had been on hunger strike for 68 days and was at risk of dying.

Mr Diyab had been demanding to be transferred to an Arab country.

He said that he wanted to be reunited with his family.

His supporters have not revealed which country has agreed to take him but officials have made clear that he cannot return to Syria because of the civil war there.

The Uruguayan government is also reported to have said has said that both Qatar and Turkey have refused to accept him.

“With his health now a very serious issue, he received an offer to travel,” The “Vigil for Diyab” group said on its Facebook page.

Uruguay is reported to have offered to bring his family to the Latin American country, but Mr Diyab rejected the offer.

He was detained as an enemy combatant with suspected ties to militants and held for 12 years at Guantanamo, despite never being charged.

While there, he staged a lengthy hunger strike that jeopardised his health and frequently fought with guards.

President Barack Obama has said he wants to close the prison in south-eastern Cuba before he leaves office.

The jail was opened in January 2002 to accommodate foreign terror suspects after the 11 September attacks in 2001 and the subsequent US-led invasion of Afghanistan.

Some 779 men have been brought there since it opened.

Uruguay took six Arab men in December 2014 but later said it would take no more, arguing the ex-inmates had struggled to adapt to the country.”

  3. Iraq alcohol: Parliament imposes ban in a surprise move (BBC, Oct 23, 2016)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-37743180

“Parliament in Iraq has voted to ban the sale, import and production of alcohol, with backers of the move arguing that its availability contradicts Islam and is unconstitutional.

Opponents argue that the vote infringes constitutional guarantees of freedom of religious belief for minority groups such as Christians.

They say they will appeal against the surprise decision in the courts.

An official said that the ban was a last-minute move by conservatives.

Since the fall of Saddam Hussein, activities perceived to be contrary to the moral code of Islam have come under repeated attack, with alcohol shops targeted in Baghdad and other cities.

While alcohol is not commonly found in restaurants and hotels in Iraq, correspondents say its consumption is relatively widespread in the scores of small shops and bars in Baghdad.

Correspondents say the new law has been passed at a time when attention is focused on the battle to wrest control of Mosul from the militant group known as Islamic State.

Ammar Toma, an MP who supported the ban, argued that it was justified because the constitution stipulates that “no law that contradicts the established provisions of Islam may be established”.”

  4. New fast-track deportation plan to expel failed asylum seekers from the UK (express, Oct 23, 2016)
    http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/724145/Failed-asylum-seekers-deportation-Britain

“FAILED asylum seekers will be kicked out of Britain within 25 days of being refused under a new fast-track deportation scheme.

Foreign criminals at the end of a jail sentence who have been recommended for deportation would also have less than four weeks to argue their case.

The scheme would apply to both groups, and would be used where the Home Office decides that an application was so “manifestly unfounded” there is little point in pursuing an appeal.

This would apply to many asylum seekers from countries deemed safe, including Nigeria, Ghana and Sierra Leone.

They would be transferred to an Immigration Removal Centre and held in detention with just 25 days to appeal.

The plans would also apply to foreign criminals to reduce the amount of time they are kept behind bars at the taxpayers’ expense.

The Government plans have been unveiled in a Ministry of Justice consultation paper to “expedite appeals by immigration detainees”….”

  5. UK Trains Saudi Pilots Amid Allegations of War Crimes in Yemen (sputniknews, Oct 23, 2016)
    https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201610231046628361-uk-trains-saudi-pilots-yemen/

“The United Kingdom have been training Saudi pilots despite the ongoing accusations of war crimes in Yemen, media reported.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The fact was discovered by the UK Liberal Democrats, who described the revelation as “shameful” and called for immediate suspension of the training, according to the Independent newspaper…”

    • Russia is giving aid to their Iranian allies by blocking their enemies from getting training.

If neither Saudi or Yeman have signed the Geneva Convention or other treaties on military conduct during a war then no war crimes were committ4ed. Most of the additional protocols to the Geneva Convention that are hampering the west were introduced by the Soviet Union who then refused to sign them or if they did sign them ignored them. The US didn’t sign most of them but the left is forcing us to follow them anyway.

Donald Trump is laying out delivered a long list of things he would do if elected president.

During an appearance in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, he vows to act on them in the first 100 days in office.

“On November Eighth, Americans will be voting for this 100-day plan to restore prosperity to our country, secure our communities, and honesty to our government,” Trump says. “This is my pledge to you and if we follow these steps we will once more have a government of, by and for the people and importantly we will make America great again. Believe me.”

Here is the list of the “Contract with the American Voter” policies detailed by Trump:

Propose a Constitutional Amendment to impose term limits on all members of Congress
Institute a hiring freeze on all federal employees to reduce federal workforce through attrition (exempting military, public safety, and public health)
Require for every new federal regulation, two existing regulations must be eliminated.

  7. WikiLeaks: Clinton-Kaine Even Lied About Timing of Veep Pick
Email suggests Kaine knew he was Hillary’s choice over a year before feigning surprise

A conversation between Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta and political consultant Erick Mullen leaked by WikiLeaks suggests that Tim Kaine — and Hillary Clinton — lied to the American people about the Virginia senator’s selection as Clinton’s running mate.

In the email, Mullen complains to Podesta that attorney Bob Glennon “won’t stop assuring Sens Brown and Heitkamp (at dinner now) that HRC has personally told Tim Kaine he’s the veep.” The email was sent on July 15, 2015 — over one full year before the campaign’s official announcement.

Clinton announced Kaine’s selection on July 22, 2016. The Clinton campaign behaved as if it were still sifting through possible VP picks until practically that very day. “Just got off the phone with Hillary. I’m honored to be her running mate. Can’t wait to hit the trail tomorrow in Miami!” Kaine tweeted.

  8. Inflation: next year’s ticking time bomb

    Ambrose Evans-Pritchard

he last time sterling fell off a cliff we were in the midst of global financial crisis from 2007 to 2008. The currency shock sent inflation shooting up to 5.2pc, abruptly squeezing on real living standards.

On that occasion the poor were at least protected. Benefits and in-work tax credits were indexed to inflation. Social cohesion was preserved.

This time the most vulnerable families will take the brunt as the cost of imported food, clothes, and fuel suddenly jump. A parting gift of the last Government was to freeze benefits for 11.5 million households until 2020.

In Nebraska 1st Amendment case, courts say the state can penalize you for exercising a right
    By J.E. Dyer October 23, 2016

I have long made the case that we don’t effectively have rights, if the government puts arbitrary prices, whenever it pleases, on exercising them.

Government has been doing that in convoluted ways for the last few decades. With the creation of unelected bureaucracies, the federal and state governments have forced an increasing number of Americans to sue in court, for example, just to assert their right to continue operating businesses while holding their own views on social matters. Few if any plaintiffs have the resources to maintain their livelihoods through such a long, expensive process.

Sometimes they win in court, but it is a travesty of honest expression, to suggest that they therefore had the use of their “rights.” If you have to spend years fighting the government itself to exercise your rights, then you don’t actually have them. Your rights are being denied to you.

They’re being denied in a disgustingly dishonest way, in fact. Your rights are being attacked insidiously, through the back door, without the policymakers signaling honestly that they don’t want you to have or exercise the rights guaranteed to Americans in the U.S. Constitution.

Sometimes the plaintiffs lose in court as well, although it’s often because the last court in the chain can find some collateral reason not to rule on the case, or overturn a lower court’s clearly flawed ruling.

In Nebraska, an ongoing case has taken this hair-splitting a step further, in a series of rulings that sound to me like they’re in very dangerous territory. The gist of the matter is this: the courts say the state harassment brought against a businessman and the company he worked for, which ultimately resulted in the businessman being fired as a defensive move, would not have deterred an ordinary person from continuing to exercise his right to free speech.

Therefore, even though the courts have agreed that the Nebraska agency was harassing the company because agency officials just didn’t like the businessman’s political speech, they have ruled in effect that guys like Robert Bennie, Jr. should simply expect to pay a high price — IMPOSED BY THE STATE — for expressing their political views.

Paying the Price for Calling Obama a Commie

      M.D. Kittle

State regulators crack down on free political speech.

Call President Barack Obama a communist in Nebraska and you could pay a hefty price.

Just ask Robert Bennie Jr., a successful financial adviser and former leader of the tea party in the state capital of Lincoln.

Bennie and the employer that eventually fired him were hounded and harassed by the Nebraska Department of Banking and Finance for months, in large part due to Bennie’s political views, according to his attorneys.

And while a U.S. appeals court agreed with a lower court that the regulators “targeted Bennie partly in retaliation for his constitutionally protected political speech,” the agency’s harassing activities did not rise to a First Amendment violation — to “deter someone of ordinary firmness from continuing to speak.”

After an arduous and costly six-year legal fight, Bennie, assisted by his attorneys at the nonprofit, public interest Pacific Legal Foundation, is taking his case to the U.S. Supreme Court.

“Our First Amendment rights can be cancelled out if government can punish people for exercising those rights,” said PLF attorney Wen Fa. “That is what happened to Bob Bennie — he was the victim of a vendetta campaign by bureaucrats because they were offended by his political views.”

  10. Bombshell: Server code destroys Donna Brazile’s claim her emails were altered by WikiLeaks

Liberals are slow learners when it comes to technology. This was demonstrated back in 2004 by then-CBS News anchor Dan Rather, who with the help of producer Mary Mapes attempted to peddle a phony story about President George W. Bush’s service in the National Guard. At the heart of the smear campaign, which ultimately cost both conspirators their jobs, was a letter supposedly written on a typewriter by Bush’s superior. The only problem was the letter spacing, which demonstrated conclusively that the letter had been created on a computer — a technological wonder that was not available in the late sixties, when Bush served.

Now it is Democratic National Committee Chairman Donna Brazile’s turn to be proven a liar by a lowly machine. Cryptographic signatures disprove Brazile’s claim that the WikiLeaks email that shows her tipping off Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton about a question in the coming debate was altered.

Many email systems use a verification system called DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM) that shows whether an email has been changed. It uses a key stored on the email server that sent the email, so it can’t be forged.

  11. ‘This is great’: Team Hillary excited about murder of black teen, which could help her agenda
By Ben Bowles October 22, 2016

How much do black lives matter to Hillary Clinton? If they can be used as fodder to advance the Democratic nominee’s agenda, then they matter a ton.

BizPac Review’s Carmine Sabia reports on a recent WikiLeaks email in which the Clinton campaign is discussing an article from “The Guardian”about a black teen murdered by a white man for playing music loud. The mother of the slain teen, whose name was Jordan Davis, calls the killing a “legal lynching” even though her son’s killer, Michael David Dunn, was sentenced to life in prison.

Here’s the back and forth between Corey Ciorciari, a Clinton policy advisor, and De’Ara Balenger, director of engagement for Hillary for America:

Newly released emails from Wikileaks show Hillary Clinton staffers debating how they can best use the death of a black man to further their agenda.

The email began as a request for an essay by Clinton from Marie Claire who was partnering with Harvard University on a study about women and guns but it quickly devolved into brainstorming ideas on how to push the campaign’s anti-gun and racial narratives.

The team began discussing an article published in “The Guardian” where the mother of Jordan Davis, a black teenager murdered by a white man for playing music loud, called the killing a “legal lynching” despite the fact that the murderer, Michael David Dunn, was convicted and sentenced to life in prison.

  13. Liberal Submission: Protect Islam, Defame Christianity

    by Giulio Meotti

The world’s biggest shopping portal, Amazon, sells many Halloween costumes. One of the novelties in 2016 has been the “Sexy Burka”, the typical obscurantist cloak that the Taliban and the Islamic State impose on women. But the sexy burqa, which on Amazon UK was priced at £18.99, did not last long.

The commercial colossus of Jeff Bezos removed the item from the website, after Amazon had been swamped with accusations of “racism”, “Islamophobia,” of marketing an Islamic garment with the white face of a model and using “a religious garment for commercial purposes”. “You are disgusting, my culture is not your costume”, wrote many users of the Islamic faith. Others used a less adorable tone: “Whoever you are, you should fear Allah. This is not a joke.”

A spokesman for Amazon promptly responded: “All Marketplace sellers must follow our selling guidelines and those who don’t will be subject to action including potential removal of their account. The product in question is no longer available”.

So that Halloween parody of the global symbol of female oppression has been censored. It is because Islamic veils contradict Western values of freedom, equality and human dignity so totally that this relativistic progressive mentality defends these Islamic veils, as it does the burkini, with loyalty.

But here also lies a double standard. What about the “Sexy Nun” Halloween costume that mocks the Catholic Church? Despite the protests of many Catholics customers, the “Sexy Nun” is still on sale at Amazon. Is it not a form of “Christianophobia”? Also, a nun is a religious figure, while a burqa is mere cloth.

  14. Turkey Targets Christians

    by Robert Jones
    October 23, 2016 at 4:45 am

    https://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/9130/turkey-targets-christians

American pastors in Turkey are being arrested hand over fist.

American Pastor Andrew Brunson, of the Resurrection Protestant Church, was arrested in Izmir (Smyrna)on October 7 alongside his wife, Norine Lyn Brunson, for “threatening the national security of Turkey.” Brunson is expected to be deported in 15 days. The couple is still being held in detention.

Turkish authorities also seized the residence permit of Ryan D. Keating, an American student pursuing a PhD in the philosophy of religion at Ankara University. Keating is a Christian who heads the Ankara Refugee Ministry for the Kurtulus Church. While he was leaving Turkey for work purposes, he was told at the airport that his residence permit in Turkey had been cancelled in September for “national security”, meaning that he will not be able to reenter the country. His wife and children are still in Ankara.

Yet another American Protestant pastor, Patrick Jansen, was not allowed to reenter Gaziantep, where he served. And still another American Protestant was ordered to leave Turkey upon landing at the airport.

They are not the first. In the last four years, more than 100 Christian pastors and other religious officials have been deported from Turkey — the visas of some of them were not renewed or were completely cancelled. They have been banned from reentering.

Pastor Brunson had also been exposed to an armed attack in front of the church in 2011, by a Turkish Muslim from the city of Manisa who shouted: “Al-Qaeda will bring you to account”, called members of the congregation “traitors” and threatened them with “bombing the church in Manisa.”

  15. Earth faces another ICE AGE within 15 YEARS as Russian scientists discover Sun ‘cooling’
THE Earth is heading towards another ice age as solar magnetic activity is set to drop by up to 60 per cent in the next 15 years.

    http://www.express.co.uk/news/science/723481/Earth-ICE-AGE-big-freeze-solar-activity

Experts say that solar activity as low as it currently is has not been seen since the mini-ice age that took place between 1645 and 1715 – a period known as the Maunder Minimum where the entire Thames froze over.

A new model has allowed experts to predict solar activity with more accuracy than ever before and it suggests that magnetic activity will fall by 60 per cent between 2030 and 2040.

The model looks at the Sun’s ’11-year heartbeat’ – the period it takes for magnetic activity to fluctuate. This cycle was first discovered some 173 years ago.

However, a mathematician has established a more up-to-date model that can forecast what the solar cycles will look like based upon dynamo effects in two layers of the Sun.

Dynamo effects are a geophysical theory that dictate how the movement of the Earth’s outer core conducts materials like liquid iron across the magnetic field to create an electric current – this also influences fluid motion beneath Earth’s surface to create two magnetic fields along the axis of the Earth’s rotation.

Valentina Zharkova from Northumbria University applied this theory to the Sun, and was able to predict the affects of solar cycles with 97 per cent accuracy.

Ms Zharkova said at the National Astronomy Meeting: “We found magnetic wave components appearing in pairs, originating in two different layers in the Sun’s interior.

  16. Cuban officials and Communist Party members can now get U.S. remittances and more

    Read more here: http://www.miamiherald.com/news/nation-world/world/americas/cuba/article109730932.html#storylink=cpy

With little fanfare, the U.S. government recently amended regulations to allow Cuban government officials and members of the Communist Party to benefit from the softening of sanctions, including receiving cash remittances and other perks.

The new beneficiaries include members of the Cuban Ministry of the Interior (MININT), the Central Committee of the Communist Party (PCC) and other branches of the Cuban government.

The change is part of the new round of regulations announced last week by the Obama administration. Along with measures that attracted widespread attention — such as the removal of the restrictions on the purchase of rum and tobacco by American travelers — this more discreet provision debunks a long-standing policy of prohibiting U.S. transactions with most members of the Cuban government, its political organizations and defense system.

As the updated Cuban Assets Control Regulations now stand, the prohibitions remain only for the members of the Politburo of the PCC, members of the Council of Ministers and high-ranking officials in the Cuban armed forces (FAR).

The category of “prohibited members” of the Cuban government and the Communist Party previously included members of MININT; the PCC secretaries and members of its Central Committee; members of Parliament; the Supreme Court; state media editors; deputy ministers and mid-level officials within the ministries; directors of companies and other state institutions; secretaries of the Confederation of Cuban Workers; and local chiefs of the Defense Committees of the Revolution (CDR).

‘He didn’t know the boy didn’t want to be raped’ court throws out migrant child sex charge
AN IRAQI asylum seeker who confessed to raping a 10-year-old boy in a swimming pool, claiming it was a “sexual emergency”, has had his conviction overturned.

In a truly shocking twist the Suptreme Court decided the grown Iraqi man may not have realised the 10-year-old did not want to be sexually abused by him.

Amir A, 20, was visiting the Theresienbad pool in the Austrian capital of Vienna last December as part of a trip to encourage integration.

When the youngster went to the showers, Amir A. allegedly followed him, pushed him into a toilet cubicle, and violently sexually assaulted him.

Following the attack, the accused rapist returned to the pool and was practising on the diving board when police arrived, after the 10-year-old raised the alarm with the lifeguard.

The child suffered severe anal injuries which had to be treated at a local children’s hospital, and is still plagued by serious post-traumatic stress disorder.

In a police interview, Amir A. confessed to the crime; telling officers the incident had been “a sexual emergency”, as his wife had remained in Iraq and he “had not had sex in four months”.

Well, Amir certainly had no apparent problem integrating himself rather thoroughly with his 10-year-old victim. Too bad that more of the suicidal “Willkommenskultur” useful idiots can’t directly experience this sort of profound “integration”. At least they’d have a bit more trouble walking to all of those pro-immigrant rallies.

  18. Clinton lawyer may have exposed entire server to China
    By Joel Gehrke (@Joelmentum) • 10/21/16 2:29 PM

Hillary Clinton’s lawyer may have allowed hackers to obtain all of the former secretary of state’s emails by reviewing the contents of her private server on a laptop tied to Chinese cyberspies, a House Republican charged on Friday.

Heather Samuelson was one of the Clinton aides who sifted through the private email server used during Clinton’s tenure at the State Department, and helped decide which would be designated as personal messages and which were work-related. That’s when the potential Chinese hacks may have taken place, because she used two laptops made by Lenovo, a company with ties to the Chinese government that has sold laptops for years with malware pre-installed on the computer.

    http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/clinton-lawyer-may-have-exposed-entire-server-to-china/article/2605231

    • “That’s when the potential Chinese hacks may have taken place, because she used two laptops made by Lenovo, a company with ties to the Chinese government that has sold laptops for years with malware pre-installed on the computer.”

I’ve been screaming about this for over ten years, ever since IBM (Idiots Become Managers – Inorganic Brain Machines, etc…) sold their Lenovo Thinkpad line to the Chinese.

Since they were very rugged laptops, Thinkpads became quite popular with the American Military. Upon China’s acquisition of Lenovo, the first thing they did was install a “here I am” feature, supposedly so that whenever individual machines went online, they could be sent software updates. That this function also happened to identify the user’s geographic location was just an innocuous little aspect of this application, or so they say.

Far be it from anyone in our excessively China-friendly (i.e., owned) government to scream bloody murder about this new-found ability to physically locate the position of American troops using these Chinese-built laptops. But wait, there’s more!

Just when you think that it can’t get any worse, the candy-@ss wonks in America’s State Department kept losing their Thinkpads (along with the confidential documents that were stored on them) so often to where they actually REQUESTED that (now Chinese-owned) Lenovo install an “auto-kill” feature which automatically locked the laptop when the person who lost it dialed in a request from their cell phone or land line.

Oh joy! Why not enable a foreign company operating in the capital of a hostile Communist government to shut down the computers of people who might be needed during a time of war. What could possibly go wrong?

Fortunately, people did finally manage to catch on and US agencies have banned the use of Lenovo computers but only after exactly how much damage was done?

Furthermore, that someone from within the State Department (i.e., Hillary Clinton) was not aware about the perils of using these intentionally infected computers represents just one more example of how feckless this candidate continues to be regarding national security. What Frank Sinatra said about Nancy Regan applies quite nicely to Hillary as well:

  19. Oh, look: Hillary email trove missing 1,000 between her and Petraeus
    Legal Insurrection

[Ed. – The time period would have covered the Benghazi debacle in September 2012. The emails are reported to be from Petraeus’ time as CENTCOM commander, which went into 2010, and CIA director, which was 2011-2012 (Nov.).]

The Hillary email scandal saga continues. This time, the FBI asserts that there a thousand emails between Hillary and General Petraeus missing from records sent to State.

    Fox News reports:

Roughly 1,000 emails between Hillary Clinton and Gen. David Petraeus were thought to be missing from the 30,000 emails provided by Clinton’s team to the State Department in December 2014, according to the newly released FBI investigative files. …

“CENTCOM records shows approximately 1,000 work-related emails between Clinton’s personal email and General David PETRAEUS, former Commander of CENTCOM and former Director of the CIA,” said the employee, whose name is redacted, according to the summary. “Most of those 1,000 emails were not believed to be included in the 30,000 emails that IPS was reviewing. Out of the 30,000 emails, IPS only had a few emails from or related to PETRAEUS as well as a few related to Leon PANETTA, former Secretary of Defense.

  20. Teachers Union Slams FBI Anti-Extremist Site As Anti-Muslim
The ‘Don’t Be A Puppet’ website has been slammed for unfairly singling out Muslims in the way it seeks to tackle radicalization.

One of the FBI’s flagship counter extremism programs has come under scrutiny by the American Federation of Teachers Union (AFT) and other lobby groups who have slammed it as unfairly singling out Muslims, according to the Wall Street Journal.

‘Don’t Be a Puppet’ is a website set up by the FBI which aims to draw people away from extremism by teaching them about different types of extremism and various atrocities that have been committed by terrorists in the past, including the 2001 Twin Towers attack (by Islamist terrorists) and the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing (by anti-government extremist Timothy McVeigh).

The site talks about extremism in general rather than Islamist extremism in particular. It is arranged as a game that students can complete.

In coalition with the American Association of School Administrators and the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, the AFT wrote a letter to FBI Director James Comey in August saying they were “deeply troubled” by the site which they felt unfairly targeted Muslim students.

Among other things in the video, the AFT objected to a video of a Muslim woman saying she viewed the FBI as “the enemy.”

  21. Senior ISIS Jihadis Move Wives Out of Mosul
The operation was given a green light by ‘Caliph’ Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi to prevent them from being taken captive by Iraqi forces.

In preparation for the battle to take back the Iraqi city of Mosul, reports indicate that senior Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL) fighters are trying to save their wives from being captured by Iraqi forces

A local source in the Nineveh Governorate who requested anonymity told Alsumaria News on Wednesday, October 19, “In the past two days, the city of Mosul has been cleared from ‘the women of the caliphate’ — wives of the seniors of ISIS, especially the ones that carry Arab or foreign citizenships.

“They were moved to the Syrian cities under ISIS [control], including Al-Raqqah. The departure of ‘the women of the caliphate’ has been given a green light by [self-proclaimed caliph] Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in order to prevent their captivity, in case Mosul will be freed by the security Iraqi forces.”

“It’s common knowledge for anybody that follows international news that the more than two-year-long crash in global oil markets has caused pain across the sector, with little immunity offered.

Oil majors have lost billions, with over 350,000 layoffs in the sector globally, while oil-producing nations, ranging from U.S. shale oil producers, to OPEC members, to the world’s largest oil producer Russia, have felt the pain.

Saudi Arabia, once thought immune to any prolonged downturn in oil prices, has also felt the pinch as prices have trended downward from $115 per barrel in mid-2014 to a low in the $20s-range in January, followed by a rebound to the high $40s to low $50s range.

The kingdom ran a record high budget deficit of $98 billion last year with an estimated $87 billion deficit forecasted for this year. Low oil prices have hit Riyadh’s state coffers so hard that it made it first international bond sale last week, worth $17.5 billion, to bring in much needed cash.

In order to reign in expenses, the government has done what was once thought unthinkable – cutting costs and expenditures. At the beginning of the year, Saudi state media reported that the Finance Ministry would cut spending, adopt new taxes and reduce price subsidies for fuel, water and power.

End of the best of times

A January report in Al-Monitor said that gas price hikes and subsidy cuts had shaken Saudi citizens. In May, Saudi Arabia announced that it was trying to wean its economy off of oil, stating that more shake ups were coming – in an effort to let its citizens know that the best of times, were in effect, over.

The government also announced new leadership at some of Saudi Arabia’s most important institutions, including the powerful oil ministry and the central bank. A half-dozen other ministries and commissions were reformulated, eliminated or saw new heads appointed in an effort to improve government responsiveness and efficiency, The Wall Street Journal said.

Moreover, in September top Saudi officials had their salaries cut by at least 20%, and their car and phone allowances sequestered. Ordinary workers lost 11 days’ pay when the government moved to the Gregorian calendar. Annual leave has been capped at 30 days.

In the meantime, however, and surprising given the economic fallout in the country, it seems that some Saudi government employees haven’t received the government’s belt tightening memo.

“The amount worked [among Saudi state employees] doesn’t even exceed an hour – and that’s based on studies,” said Civil Service Minister Khaled Alaraj this past week. He made his remarks during an official discussion of Saudi Arabia’s economy broadcast at prime time on Wednesday night.

His remarks are even more poignant given that over than two-thirds of all working Saudis are employed by the government. Last year, according to several reports, Saudi Arabia spent about 45% of its budget to pay government employee wages.

“If we didn’t take any reform measures, and if the global economy stays the same, then we’re doomed for bankruptcy in three to four years,” said Mohamed Al Tuwaijri, the Saudi deputy economy minister, at the same meeting.

Adding another layer on the already dismal disclosure, Saudi Finance Minister Ibrahim AlAssaf said that oil prices will not return as in the past, stressing that energy sources have changed and their must be new procedures.

One of those new procedures should be for Saudi Arabia to put its state coffers ahead of its fevered pitch attempt to protect oil market share at all costs, casting aside its bitter rivalry with fellow OPEC member Iran and also non-OPEC member Russia, and agree to a real and substantial oil production cut. Anything less, will be just more meaningless rhetoric.”

    • “In order to reign [sic] in expenses, the government has done what was once thought unthinkable – cutting costs and expenditures.”

      From the linked article:

“Nevertheless, only about 2 percent of the country’s enormous land mass is arable, even with intensive irrigation and modern farming technology, and the country in modern times has always depended on imported food. That dependence is increasing as the young population continues to grow at a rate that outpaces production. Facing a probable 77 percent growth in its population by 2050, Saudi Arabia is grappling with the realization that its barren soil and dwindling water supply will be insufficient to feed all those people. A quest for “food security,” in a world where competition for food can only increase, has moved to the top of the Saudi planning agenda.”

  23. Indonesian Citizens Suffer Under Harsh Hudud Laws
13 people were caned October 17 in Indonesia’s Aceh province for unlawful intimacy between the genders.

A woman given 23 strokes of the cane just for reportedly standing too close to her boyfriend was one of 13 people caned on Monday in Indonesia’s Aceh province, according to The Daily Mail. A fourteenth person, a pregnant 22 year old, was sentenced to caning, but the sentence will be carried out after she gives birth.

Aceh province in Indonesia applies the hudud, punishments ordained by sharia which include canings and other corporal punishments for a range of offences such as physical intimacy between unmarried couples.

One of the men was caned for spending time in a private space with a woman to whom he was not married, which might have lead to adultery.

Meanwhile, on the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia, a gay couple who posted a picture of themselves kissing on Facebook was arrested under the country’s indecency laws. The couple said they posted the picture to prove their love. The caption read “With my dear lover tonight. May our love last forever.”

Even though homosexuality is legal, the picture is considered pornographic.

Indonesia is currently working on shutting down Grindr and 80 other gay websites to clampdown on what it considers indecency.

The couple was released on bail but may go to jail if convicted.

  25. Battle for Mosul: Why Turkey Is Bombing Anti-ISIS Fighters in Iraq, Syria (nbcnews, Oct 23, 2016)
    http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/isis-terror/battle-mosul-why-turkey-bombing-anti-isis-fighters-iraq-syria-n670511

“Turkey is a NATO partner that stands with U.S. troops on the battlefields of Syria and Iraq, but it’s an ally that’s increasingly turning its guns on fighters the U.S. sees as vital to crushing ISIS.

On Wednesday, Turkey launched one of its biggest airstrikes in decades — bombing 18 positions in northern Syria and killing an estimated 200 fighters.

But the strikes north of Aleppo didn’t involve President Bashar al-Assad’s army, or any of the main groups fighting his government like the Free Syrian Army, the Jihadi militia Jabhat Fatah al Sham, or even ISIS.

Instead, Turkey bombed People’s Protection Units, or YPG — Kurdish militia the U.S. considers the most effective force against ISIS in Syria.

Turkey has sent 2,000 troops into Iraq, where they are watching the massive military operation aimed at recapturing Mosul from the extremists. Baghdad maintains Turkey has violated its sovereignty and on Thursday issued an arrest warrant for an ex-Mosul governor who allegedly “invited” in the troops.

These latest in a series of military moves reveal how the government of President Tayyip Erdogan is reasserting its historic territorial claims while also trying to crush the country’s mortal enemies — Kurdish separatists.

Ankara has fought ethnic Kurdish militias within its borders for decades to prevent the birth of a new country, Kurdistan, carved out of Turkey itself. So it has watched carefully as YPG fighters secure large swaths of land along the Syrian-Turkish border.

To Turkey’s government, these Kurds are no different to the outlawed PKK militants who have carried out a series of deadly bombings within Turkey in the last year. The group is trying to force Turkey to accept the Kurdish right to an independent state, which has been denied them for a century.

Perhaps more terrifying for Turkey, Kurdish groups have established a state in all but name in northern Iraq. Its capital Erbil is one of the only functioning, tolerant and relatively peaceful cities in the country.

The problem as Turkey sees it is that the Kurds want the same for northern Syria. And then they want to link the two, which is anathema to Ankara.

    ‘The Mosul Question’
Something else is motivating Turkey apart from the Kurds, and this goes back 100 years.

The Kurds were among the great losers after World War I, having failed to gain an independent homeland as the conflict’s winners scooped up the war spoils.

The Turks also emerged humiliated from the conflict, their once great Ottoman Empire shattered and shared out among the victorious French, who took control of Syria and Lebanon, and the British, who moved into Iraq and Palestine.

One issue and one city has remained contentious to this day.

What was dubbed “The Mosul Question” in the 1920s plagued the organization that was the precursor to the United Nations.

Turkey desperately wanted to keep control of a city it had controlled for centuries and considered vital to its image as a power. Mosul’s people, it argued, were bound to Turkey by history, trade and tongue.

The Turks also coveted the region’s oil wealth.

Turkey considered the entire swath of land from the Sinjar Mountains, where ISIS attacked the Yazidi people in this current war, through Iraq’s Erbil and Kirkuk, all the way to the Iranian border, as its natural strategic buffer zone.

The Great Powers, led by Britain, would have none of it. The British saw Mosul as an Arab city built by Arabs. British diplomats and leaders also reasoned the Turks would threaten Baghdad if it they got their hands on Mosul again.

So Turkey lost when the League of Nations ruled against it in 1926. But its obsession with Mosul has not gone away.

So Turkey is eyeing the current war and the attack on ISIS-held Mosul carefully.

Chiefly, it’s watching what the Kurds do, where they go, how strong they are, and how much backing they get from the U.S. and anyone else.

On Thursday, Kurdish peshmerga fighters opened a new front against ISIS north and east of Mosul, coming close to but avoiding the Turkish army’s training base at Bashiqa.

The base has for weeks been the focus of a diplomatic spat between Iraq and Turkey.

“Know your place … you are not at my level!” Erdogan fumed to the Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi on October 1. His anger came after Iraq’s parliament labeled Turkey an “occupying force … (that risked) a regional war.”

Turkey maintains it has no intention of pulling out of its base near Mosul. Once the city is taken from ISIS, Ankara is aiming to become the main protector of its Sunni Muslim population.

That’s because the city’s liberation from ISIS may come at a terrible price for its people. Human rights groups have already accused Iranian backed Shiite militias hovering near Mosul of committing atrocities against other Sunni populations.

So the Turks, helped by Saudi Arabia, will position themselves as Sunni saviors. And Mosul is close enough to the Iranian border for the Saudis to help the Turks counter another foe — Shiite Tehran.

Erdogan has his own motives for foreign war. He has frustratingly failed to remove Assad from power in neighboring Syria, and is still trying to shore up his own political power after crushing a failed coup in July.

War in Syria that focuses on crushing Kurds is a popular policy at home.

n parallel to the Mosul front, Turkish tanks and jets are attacking Kurdish YPG units in Syria.

And Turkey is forging ahead with Operation Euphrates Shield, announced in August, its attempt to carve out a 2,000-square-mile buffer zone deep into Syrian territory.

Turkish intelligence and special forces are digging in as aid organizations and Turkish civic groups build houses for those who’ve fled their homes — all of them pulling together to establish a so-called safe zone along the border. Except it’s much more than that.

Turks, Arabs and Persians are vying for control and influence in a region that’s been their battleground for millennia.

Just as Turkey dreams of influence in Mosul, it is eyeing Syria’s Aleppo — another ancient city with deep and powerful ties to Turkey, another city in the crosshairs of a dozen forces, its future up for grabs.

One thing is certain — Iraq and Syria will never again be the countries they were for a century, their neat border lines drawn by European diplomats in dinner jackets…”

      • Rebuilding the Ottoman Empire. The Eastern European leaders have long memories and will fight to prevent the Turks from once again ruling their nations. Trump will help them, Hillary won’t.

  26. U.S. General Concerned About State of Afghan Security Forces (nbcnews, Oct 23, 2016)
    http://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/u-s-general-concerned-about-state-afghan-security-forces-n671371

“The U.S. general in charge of the war in Afghanistan is very concerned about casualty rates among Afghan Security Forces, and he says some of the fault lies directly with the Afghan leadership.

“We are very concerned about the casualty rate,” Army General John Nicholson said Sunday, explaining that last year the Afghans suffered high casualties and this year it has been “the same or slightly higher.”

“One of the principle factors for the high casualties has been the leadership, the failures of leadership at certain levels. Primarily this has been in the police and to a lesser extent in the (Afghan) army,” Nicholson said.

“We have seen general failures” in some units, he said, highlighting the police as a particular problem area.

Nicholson said that some Afghan units are not only lacking leadership, but they have little ammunition or even food and water.

“The failure is not the young soldier on the ground, the failure is the ability to properly supply them and lead them. So these young police officers who are dying out there on the checkpoints don’t always have enough food or water or ammunition, and their leader may not be with them,” he said.

“This is a failure of leadership,” he said firmly.

Nicholson said that both corruption and leaders failing to lead their troops on the ground in a dangerous situation are resulting in Afghan Security Force casualties.

“Casualties are a problem,” spokesperson for Operation Resolute Support Brigadier General Charlie Cleveland echoed.

Cleveland explained that many of the Afghan casualties have occurred at the thousands of Afghan checkpoints around the country, which are usually undermanned…”

  27. U.S. Commander: ISIS Attempting to Establish Caliphate in Afghanistan (nbcnews, Oct 23, 2016)
    http://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/us-commander-isis-attempting-establish-caliphate-afghanistan-n671381

“KABUL, Afghanistan — ISIS is trying to establish a caliphate inside Afghanistan, the country’s top U.S. commander said.

“Right now we see them very focused on trying to establish their caliphate, the Khorasan caliphate, inside Afghanistan,” General John Nicholson said in an exclusive interview with NBC News.

The push is “principally a non-Afghan movement,” Nicholson said.

According to Nicholson, the U.S. has seen foreign fighters, particularly Uzbeks from the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, joining the Islamic State Khorasan, or IS-K. The U.S. also sees many Pakistani Pashtun from the Pakistani Taliban who joined IS-K moving into Afghanistan to fight, he said.

Nicholson said that the IS-K is “completely rejected by the Afghan people,” and explained that the broader ISIL philosophy is “the antithesis of Afghan culture.”

“With our Afghan partners, we’ve been able to reduce that territory significantly and inflict heavy casualties on them to include killing their leaders,” he said.

Earlier in the day, Brigadier General Charlie Cleveland, the spokesperson for Resolute Support in Kabul, said that the IS-K presence in Afghanistan is primarily in Nangarhar Province and that it numbers around 1,000 fighters. A recent operation in southern Nangarhar wiped out 15 to 20 percent of the IS-K fighters there.

General Nicholson also acknowledged that the border region with Pakistan remains “very porous” and insurgents are able to move across in both directions. The fighters moving across are primarily Pakistani Taliban, Haqqani Network and IS-K…”

    http://www.express.co.uk/news/world/724277/Teacher-pupils-students-class-racism-white-privellege

“A SHOCKING lecture proposed to “heal the racial divide” prompted controversy after a school teacher told his students that ALL white people are racist.

A white high school philosophy teacher was recorded telling his students that “to be white is to be racist, period.”

The shocking lesson sparked outrage during a class dealing with racial tensions in America.

James Coursey, who teaches at Norman North High School, in Oklahoma, told his class: “Am I racist? And, I say yeah. I don’t want to be.

“It’s not like I choose to be racist, but do I do things because of the way I was raised?”

Mr Coursey began the lesson with a video showing a man holding a globe and applying white-out over a country to illustrate what European people had done to Native Americans and Africans.

From this clip, he told the class about Western imperialism before announcing that all white people were racist.

Some furious parents have responded by calling the teacher racist, and some have even called for his sacking…”

      From the 2007 link:

“A RACIST: A racist is one who is both privileged and socialized on the basis of race by a white supremacist (racist) system. ‘The term applies to all white people (i.e., people of European descent) living in the United States, regardless of class, gender, religion, culture or sexuality. By this definition, people of color cannot be racists, because as peoples within the U.S. system, they do not have the power to back up their prejudices, hostilities, or acts of discrimination….’”

The education program also notes that “reverse racism” is “a term created and used by white people to deny their white privilege.” And “a non-racist” is called “a non-term,” because, the program explains, “The term was created by whites to deny responsibility for systemic racism, to maintain an aura of innocence in the face of racial oppression, and to shift the responsibility for that oppression from whites to people of color (called ‘blaming the victim’).”

  30. Bomb suspect’s family to sue over his prison suicide

The family of dead terror suspect Jaber Albakr is to seek compensation from the state of Saxony for his suicide in jail. He killed himself after being arrested over an alleged plot to bomb a Berlin airport.

A lawyer for Albakr’s family told German media his clients planned to launch legal action accusing Saxony’s justice system of negligence in Albakr’s death.

Leipzig-based lawyer Alexander Hübner told the Saturday edition of the daily “Süddeutsche Zeitung,” along with public broadcasters NDR and WDR, that a court should decide if authorities had acted irresponsibly by leaving the Syrian man alone in his cell after his arrest. Hübner also said the circumstances of Albakr’s suicide should be fully investigated.

Albakr was arrested on October 10, two days after he evaded police during a raid on his flat in the eastern German city of Chemnitz. The raid uncovered 1.5 kilograms of explosives.

Police had been monitoring the 22-year-old, believing he and other suspects were in contact with the “Islamic State” militant group and were in the advanced stages of planning an attack on a Berlin airport. Two days after his arrest, Albakr hanged himself in a Leipzig prison.[…]

Republican National Committee head Reince Priebus slammed a debate question asking Donald Trump if he’d accept the outcome of the election, calling it a premature and unprecedented request for a “concession speech.”

In an interview on CBS News’ “Face The Nation” on Sunday, the RNC chairman was incensed about persistent demands that the GOP nominee give up his right to question voter fraud.

“To ask a candidate three weeks before the election if they lose are they going to concede, asking for a concession speech, no one does that,” Priebus said.

A voter registration group called “HarrisonburgVOTES” is responsible for the applications, and the group is reportedly headed by Joe Fitzgerald, chairman of the Democratic Committee in Harrisonburg.

    An investigation has been launched.

    Colorado

An investigation in Colorado in September, 2016, revealed that dead people were voting in multiple elections. “We do believe there were several instances of potential vote fraud that occurred,” Colorado Secretary of State Wayne Williams told local news station CBS4.

An egregious example of illegal voter fraud in Colorado was that of Sara Sosa, a woman who died in 2009, yet “voted” in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013.

    Michigan

Two Democratic officials in Michigan, Jason Bauer and Mike McGuinness, were convicted in 2012 for involvement in an election fraud scheme. The two men attempted to put a fake “Tea Party” candidate on the ballot to split the conservative vote.

    California

In only three counties in California’s 2016 presidential primary, there were reportedly 194 people who voted twice. Some voters were voting once by mail, then going to polls and voting again, according to the East Bay Times. It is possible that even more mail votes were submitted fraudulently, but only 194 people actually voted in person after having a mail ballot submitted for them, leading to them being caught.

    Missouri

The initial results of a Democratic primary in St. Louis this year were scrapped after absentee ballots were improperly recorded. The first election, which had shown incumbent Penny Hubbard winning the race, was re-done. In the special election that followed, Hubbard’s opponent, Bruce Franks, Jr., decisively won.

    Florida

Deisy Penton de Cabrera was convicted in 2013 of possessing more than two ballots which belong to other voters. Cabrera was found with 12 absentee ballots of other people and was keeping a list of elderly Hispanic voters, many whom were deaf, blind, or had Alzheimer’s.

    Kentucky

In Magoffin County, Ky., three people were convicted of felony voter fraud in 2016. Magoffin County Magistrate Gary Risner, Deputy County Clerk Larry Shepard, and Tami Jo Risner were discovered buying votes.

During the case, the court heard witnesses testify to being paid $50 to vote for a slate in 2014.

    North Carolina

Pasco Parker, a Tennessee resident, pleaded guilty to felony voter fraud in North Carolina in 2015 after he voted in person in Tennessee, then sent in absentee ballots to Florida and North Carolina.

A North Carolina watchdog group called the “Voter Integrity Project” uncovered Parker’s fraud.

    Arkansas

Democratic State Rep. Hudson Hallum, along with his father Ken Hallum and two campaign workers, were caught bribing absentee voters and tampering with ballots. They pleaded guilty and were sentenced in 2013.

    Georgia

A Georgia man named Mohammad Shafiq fraudulently tampered with voter registrations during a 2012 election. Shafiq was convicted and sentenced in 2015.

    Indiana

Former Indiana Secretary of State Charlie White was convicted of felony charges in 2012 after lying about his address to keep collecting a paycheck from the Fishers Town Council.

    Pennsylvania

In early 2015, Pennsylvania Secretary of the Commonwealth Carol Aichele announced, “there’s potential voter fraud in Pennsylvania,” going on to say that around 731 people may have double voted in Pennsylvania.

    Arizona

Arizona woman Carol Hannah voted in both Arizona and Colorado in 2010. Hannah was convicted of voter fraud in Colorado and lost her right to vote.

    Iowa

An Iowa woman named Mayra Alejandra Lopez Morales pled guilty and was convicted in a voter fraud case in 2014. Morales, not a citizen of the United States, registered and voted in the 2012 election.

    Connecticut

Former Connecticut State Rep. Christina Ayala was convicted in 2015 for election law violations. Ayala voted several times in districts where she did not live.

    Kansas

Michael L. Hannum pled guilty and was convicted in Kansas for voting in both Nebraska and Kansas in 2012.

    Louisiana

Louisiana man Stanley Leger pled guilty to buying votes in a mayoral race. Leger reportedly paid mentally impaired people to vote for a candidate he worked for.

    Maryland

Wendy Rosen, a 2012 Democratic congressional candidate in Maryland, brought her campaign to an end after revelations surfaced that she voted in 2006 and 2008 in both Maryland and Florida. Rosen pleaded guilty to illegal voting in 2013.

    Alaska

A Mexican man named Rogelio Mejorada-Lopez was registered to vote in Alaska and voted in several elections. He was caught and convicted in 2005.

    Wisconsin

Robert Munroe, a Wisconsin resident, was convicted in 2016 of voting several times in elections throughout 2011 and 2012, and even voted twice, in two different states in the presidential election of 2012.

Munroe blamed the voting on being in a “fugue state,” though several emails and texts shared in court show him encouraging friends and family to vote and donate money to candidates.

    Alabama

Three women in Alabama were found guilty of various voter fraud charges in 2015 after tampering with numerous absentee ballots in a City Commissioner race.

    Massachusetts

Enrico Villamaino, a Republican candidate for state representative pled guilty and was convicted in 2013 for various charges in voter fraud in East Longmeadow, Mass.

    Ohio

In Cincinnati, Ohio, a poll worker named Melowese Richardson was convicted on four counts of illegal voting in 2013. Richardson voted twice in the 2012 presidential election, and voted three other times for her sister who is in a coma.

During the trial, Richardson suggested her prosecution may be because she is black and supporting Obama.

  33. Telegraph: U.S. Top Country for Gun Ownership, Not Even in Top 10 for Firearm Deaths

On October 22 The Telegraph published a map showing the U.S. leads the world in private firearm ownership but does not even crack the Top 10 when it comes to firearm-related deaths.

According to the Telegraph, the countries with highest per-capita gun ownership are:

    USA – 112.6 guns per 100 residents
    Serbia – 75.6
    Yemen – 54.8
    Switzerland – 45.7
    Cyprus – 36.4
    Saudi Arabia – 35
    Iraq – 34.2
    Uruguay – 31.8
    Sweden – 31.6
    Norway – 31.3

Note–the Telegraph presents gun ownership as so expansive in the U.S. that guns actually outnumber people. Yet the U.S. does not appear on the list of the Top 10 countries for firearm-related deaths. Those countries are:

    • “Note–the Telegraph presents gun ownership as so expansive in the U.S. that guns actually outnumber people. Yet the U.S. does not appear on the list of the Top 10 countries for firearm-related deaths.”

First off, let’s make sure it’s understood that there’s no such thing as “gun crime”. Guns are amoral tools, just like baseball bats, hammers and kitchen knives (all of them common murder weapons). A gun with its safety on is about as dangerous as a piece of hardwood of the same size and weight. It is also critical to recall that most of these surveys lump together gun-assisted suicides with general murder statistics involving firearms.

Secondly, if one subtracts the number of criminal acts committed in America by minority races using guns, these crime statistics plummet to the same level of many European countries that subject their citizens to draconian gun ownership restrictions.

A good example is Switzerland, where almost every home has a firearm. Yet, the Swiss experience very little in the way of crimes committed with guns. Indigenous European racial homogeneity would seem to play a much larger part in maintaining the peace than restricting weapons ownership.

Conversely, multiculturalism and diversity appear to play a significant role in the prevalence of violent crimes, with or without guns involved. Sweden’s skyrocketing rape statistics stand as glaring evidence of this.

      • The multiracial society skews the crimes committed with guns along with the average life expectancy and other stats. This is partially because the left has created a salad bowl of cultures which is messing up everything for everyone in all western nations. It isn’t all nurture there is still a lot of nature involved as well but with cultural Marxism messing with science it is very hard to quantify how much of the mess is nurture and how much is nature.

  34. America’s Civilizational Paralysis

The Greek city-states and the Western European democracies after World War I all knew they could not continue as usual with their fiscal, social, political, and economic behavior. But all these states and societies feared far more the self-imposed sacrifices that might have saved them.

Mid-fifteenth-century Byzantium was facing endemic corruption, a radically declining birthrate and shrinking population, and the end of civic militarism-all the last-gasp symptoms of an irreversible decline. Its affluent ruling and religious orders and expansive government services could no longer be supported by disappearing agrarians and the overtaxed mercantile middle class. Returning to the values of the Emperor Justinian’s sixth-century empire that had once ensured a vibrant Byzantine culture of stability and prosperity throughout the old Roman east remained a nostalgic daydream. Given the hardship and sacrifice that would have been required to change the late Byzantine mindset, most residents of Constantinople plod

  35. Swiss woman wins headscarf court battle (thelocal, Oct 23, 2016)
    https://www.thelocal.ch/20161023/swiss-court-rules-in-favour-of-woman-fired-over-headscarf

“A Swiss court has ruled against a company that fired a longtime employee after she began wearing the Muslim headscarf, marking one of the first such rulings in Switzerland, media reported Sunday.

A regional court in Bern ruled last month that a 29-year-old Serbian woman was fired without just cause from a dry cleaning business, and ordered the company to dish out back-pay and damages to her, the Le Matin Dimanche weekly reported.

The woman, identified only as Abida, was fired in January 2015 from a job she had held for six years, after she began wearing the Muslim headscarf, it reported.

Her employer in Bern had told her the headscarf violated hygiene rules, and told her to remove it or be let go.

She reportedly offered to wash her headscarf daily or wear disposable headscarves, but her employer refused.

The Bern court ruled that the company had violated her constitutional right to freedom of expression, according to the paper.

It said wearing a headscarf can only be grounds for termination in cases where it makes it impossible to carry out duties described in the employment contract or if it “substantially affects” the working environment.

The case is one of the first of its kind in Switzerland, Le Matin Dimanche said, pointing to only one other known case dating back to 1990, when a machine manufacturer in the east of the country was also faulted for firing a woman for wearing a headscarf.

The ruling was hailed by several Muslim groups.

“It shouldn’t matter if a woman wears a headscarf or a man wears the Jewish kippa. At work, competence should be the criteria and not the clothes that you wear,” Onder Gunes of the Federation of Islamic Organisations in Switzerland told the paper.”

  36. 35 suspected Gülenist Turkish diplomats seek asylum in Germany (hurriyetdailynews, Oct 23, 2016)

“Dozens of Turkish diplomats, military officers and their families have sought asylum in Germany since the July 15 coup attempt, local officials have said.

The Interior Ministry said 35 Turkish diplomatic passport holders had formally applied for asylum.

The information, given in response to a parliamentary question, did not give any details about the asylum seekers’ identities, positions or status of their applications.

Turkey recalled scores of diplomats and military staff in the wake of a foiled coup on July 15 over suspected ties to the Fethullah Terrorist Organization (FETÖ), which is believed to have organized the attempted military takeover.

Many suspects sought asylum in European countries, including the military attaché in Berlin, Col. Ayhan Da?l?.

The Interior Ministry said any extradition request by the Turkish government would be examined on a case-by-case basis by higher regional courts…”

  39. “Calais Jungle camp in flames as British anarchists and migrants riot ahead of demolition

THE Calais Jungle camp is in flames tonight as migrants and British anarchists clash with police.

By David Trayner / Published 24th October 2016”

“Migrants have lit fires and are pelting police with rocks in a bid to stop the planned demolition of the camp today.

Officers in full riot gear are responding with tear gas.

British pro-immigration group No Borders – which advocates COMPLETE freedom of movement – has issued a “call to arms” to prevent the clearance.

French police have banned No Borders from the site and set up an exclusion zone as it fears its members are inciting violence.

No Borders was accused of co-ordinating violence at the sprawling camp last night, as members were seen directing movements on walkie-talkies.

Christian Salome, president of charity Immigrant Shelter – which is trying to help the migrants – said: “People have come for the violence.

“No Borders attack anyone – and we’ve already had some injuries.

“They remind me of the people who go to football matches to fight with the police.

“It’s the same thing – people come for the violence, and have nothing to do with the phenomenon of migration.”

The destruction of the camp will see up to 1,250 police help to disperse between 6,000 and 10,000 migrants.

Many are desperate to get to Britain to claim asylum, meaning they will resist attempts to bus them to processing centres in other parts of France.

British charity volunteers fear French officers are spoiling for a fight with the migrants.

From today, 60 buses are expected to take thousands of the camp’s residents to temporary reception centres where they will have to claim asylum in France within a set period of time – or face deportation.

It is believed they will be sorted into groups of families, minors, vulnerable or ill people and others travelling alone at a registration centre at the edge of the camp and given coloured wristbands depending on which region they say they would like to be sent to.

The clearing of the settlement is scheduled to begin this morning, with buses used to transport the majority of the camp’s residents to temporary accommodation centres.

Dismantling of the camp is then expected to begin on Tuesday, a spokesman for the French interior ministry said.

He said: “Our priority is to welcome immigrants in order to protect them in France in good structures, good houses.

“We hope there will be numerous [people] but we don’t know, and we hope to welcome just on Monday about 2,000 to 3,000 people.”
