For wealthy Middle Eastern migrants, prices up to 5000 euros

      – According to Serbian daily Blic, since the migrant crisis began, Palestinian ambassador to Serbia Mohamed Nabhan – using his diplomatic position and high-level contacts – has provided a large number of wealthy migrants from the Middle East with visa to enter the country at high prices, between 3,000 and 5,000 euros.

The daily reported it was wealthy citizens – mostly from Palestine, Syria, Iraq and Jordan – who took advantage of Serbian visa, apt to facilitate and shorten the journey to the countries of Western Europe, and in far less precarious conditions.

Between January and June, according to the daily newspaper, quoting sources inside the security services, the Palestinian Embassy in Belgrade forwarded to Serbian Foreign Affairs Ministry at least 43 notes (for 122 people) applying for a visa, and ambassador Nabhan has personally intervened to favour 24 Middle Eastern citizens.(ANSA).

    • ‘Turkey gave no warning’ – downed Russian pilot (BBC, Nov 25, 2015)
      http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-34925229

“The surviving pilot of a Russian plane shot down by Turkey on the Syrian border has said no warning was given.

Capt Konstantin Murakhtin told Russian television there was “no way” the jet could have violated Turkish airspace, as Turkey said it did.

Russia said Capt Murakhtin was rescued in a 12-hour operation involving special forces.

Turkey insists the pilots were warned 10 times before the plane was shot down.
It is not clear what happened to the body of his co-pilot, who was killed by gunfire as he parachuted from the burning plane.

Capt Murakhtin was speaking from the Hmeymim airbase, where Russia’s aircraft have been based in its Syrian campaign, and where he was taken after being rescued.

He said he knew the region he had been flying in “very well” and that the jet had not been in Turkish airspace “even for a second”.

He added he wanted to go back to duty and stay at the airbase, saying “someone has to pay” for the death of the other pilot, Lt Col Oleg Peshkov.

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that Lt Col Peshkov would be posthumously awarded the Star of the Hero of Russia.

There are also to be state awards too for Capt Murakhtin and the marine who died during his rescue, Alexander Pozynich…”

  5. UN refugee chief says Japan should accept more refugees

TOKYO – Japan should be doing more to help with the global catastrophe of asylum seekers, the head of the UN refugee body said Wednesday.

Antonio Guterres, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, told reporters in Tokyo that he was discussing the problem with Japanese officials and “would like the Japanese government to push its actions … to increase the number of people resettled in Japan, and especially now to look into the humanitarian admissions of Syrians.”

Japan is a major donor of humanitarian aid but accepts very few refugees each year, and the country’s reluctance to allow in more is raising controversy given the crises festering in Europe and elsewhere.

Past efforts to resettle Vietnamese and later Myanmar refugees were viewed as not terribly successful. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe raised eyebrows recently when he suggested Japan needed to first deal with its own problems before taking in newcomers.

Japan needs to “progressively improve the asylum system here … to make it more effective in the reception and in the recognition and integration of refugees in Japanese society,” Guterres said. He also noted that Japan’s location far away from the front lines of the crisis was a factor behind the scant number of refugee arrivals.

The UNHCR chief praised Japan’s aid efforts overall, however, and the courageous efforts by non-governmental groups based in Japan to help, often in “very dangerous locations.”

Guterres spoke at an event where the Japanese apparel company, Fast Retailing, announced a partnership with the UNHCR to expand its support for refugees, which includes internships and donations of funds and of recycled clothing.

    • UN condemns nationality profiling of refugees

Around a thousand migrants remain stuck at the main border crossing into Macedonia from Greece due to new restrictions denying them refugee status.

Protests raging from sewing their lips together to using body paints have been staged to get their message across.

They are angry that only nationals from war torn countries are being allowed through. That means those from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan.

The United Nations has condemned the new profiling of asylum seekers.
A spokesperson the organisations refugee agency (UNHCR) Adrian Edwards said told reporters:

“All people have the right to seek asylum, irrespective of their nationality and to have their individual cases heard. Proper information needs to be provided to people affected by decisions like these at border points, and proper counseling has to be available.”

While Balkan countries have introduced the profiling restrictions, Sweden, traditionally a refugee haven has also announced it will tighten its border controls. It expects up to 190,000 asylum seekers to reach its borders this years and its says its reception system just can’s cope.

“The situation is untenable,” said Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven. “It is untenable for those who seek asylum, for personnel and for all those who should feel trust for the functions carried out by society. Now, to put it bluntly, more people will have to seek asylum and get protection in other European countries.”

Monitoring groups say the numbers of migrants taking the dangerous sea route to Greece are falling and there have also been no boats landing in Italy for a week. Both are probably due to Winter’s rough seas and freezing temperatures rather than any slowing down in the numbers fleeing war and poverty.

But in a move designed to try and persuade refugees from taking the perilous journey to Europe, the EU has confirmed it is setting up a 3bn euro fund for two years to help Turkey support Syrian refugees.

It was a fund offered to Ankara last month as part of a package of measures to ease Europe’s migration crisis and which EU leaders plan to finalise at a summit with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Brussels on Sunday (Nov. 29).

  7. Belgium’s Foreign Minister Warns of Attack With ‘Heavy Weapons’ and ‘Suicide Bombs’

Belgium’s foreign minister tells ABC News that the country’s primary concern right now is to find about 10 individuals whom Belgium authorities believe could launch a Paris-like attack with “heavy weapons” and “suicide bombs.”

Foreign Minister Didier Reynders said the “heavy weapons” might be Kalashnikovs or “maybe more than that.”

He also said intelligence seems to indicate that commercial centers and shopping malls are targets — not schools or metros.

“The most important threat is on some shops and some shopping centers…more shopping centers and other kinds of commercial activities,” he said. Schools and subways in Brussels are currently closed but are set to reopen Wednesday.

Reynders said officials have received a tremendous number of tips about suspected attacker and fugitive Salah Abdeslam, who authorities said fled the scene in Paris and returned to his hometown in the Brussels area the morning after the shooting. But Reynders said he is confident Abdeslam will be captured.

He also said that while intelligence sharing among countries is improving, it’s still not enough.

“It’s impossible to say that we had 130 dead people or more in Paris and it was a success for all the services, for the security services,” Reynders said. “We need to do more and more.”

Brussels will remain on the highest level terror alert through next Monday, Belgian’s prime minister said Monday.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Paris’ prosecutors office told ABC News that a second person was seen on a Paris subway with the attacks’ presumed mastermind, Abdelhamid Abaaoud, on the night of the attacks.

More than 300 people were injured in the Paris attacks and 161 remain in the hospital, including 26 in intensive care or resuscitation, French Health Minister Marisol Touraine said today.

French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said today that police have conducted over 1,000 searches and raids in France since the country’s state of emergency was implemented. One-hundred sixty five people have been detained and 230 weapons have been seized, said Cazeneuve.

  8. Migrant crisis: ‘EU cannot take any more refugees’ (BBC, Nov 25, 2015)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-34904931

“European countries cannot accept any more refugees, the French prime minister has been quoted as saying.

Manuel Valls said stricter control of the EU’s external borders would determine the bloc’s fate, in comments published by the Sueddeutsche Zeitung.

Europe’s border controls have come under renewed scrutiny since the attacks in Paris on 13 November.

European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker has said that the Schengen agreement is “partly comatose”.

Several EU countries have imposed border controls in recent week – despite the Schengen system of passport-free movement – amid the arrival of hundreds of thousands of migrants, many of whom are fleeing Syria and Iraq.

Some countries imposed new restrictions after a forged Syrian passport was found next to the body of one of the perpetrators involved in the Islamic State attacks on the French capital…”

Houthi fighters were stopping aid lorries at checkpoints and allowing in only very limited assistance, he said.

Government forces, backed by a Saudi-led coalition, have been battling the rebels for control of Taiz for months.

  12. Germany to send 650 soldiers to Mali (BBC, Nov 25, 2015)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-34924231

“Germany will send up to 650 soldiers to Mali to support France in its fight against Islamist militants, the country’s defence minister has said.

Ursula von der Leyen made the announcement as Chancellor Angela Merkel prepared to meet President Francois Hollande in Paris.

The leaders will discuss support in the wake of the deadly attacks by Islamic State in the French capital.

Around 1,500 French troops are deployed in Mali to fight against militants.

“We will and must stand firmly by France’s side,” Ms von der Leyen said.

The deployment comes after France invoked a previously unused EU treaty clause in the wake of the Paris attacks, which killed 130 people.

The clause obliges other member states to provide it with “aid and assistance by all means in their power”.

Germany’s move also follows an attack last week by al-Qaeda linked militants on a hotel in Mali’s capital Bamako, killing 22 people…”

  13. India Kashmir stand-off ends, four killed (BBC, Nov 25, 2015)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-34918500

“A civilian and three armed militants have been killed in a fierce gun battle at an army camp in Indian-administered Kashmir.

The three gunmen forced their way into the camp near the Line of Control (LoC), the de facto border that divides Kashmir between India and Pakistan.

An army official said the attackers entered after cutting through a fence.

Both India and Pakistan claim Kashmir in its entirety. Militants have been fighting Indian rule since 1989.

The gunmen stormed the army base at Tangdhar, 140 kilometres (87 miles) northwest of the main city of Srinagar, firing automatic weapons.

The army’s counter-offensive lasted for about six hours, agencies said.

“Three terrorists were killed in the exchange of stand-off fire that began in the morning hours.

One soldier was wounded in the firefight,” defence spokesman in Srinagar NN Joshi told the AFP news agency.

Last week, fighting in the same district saw an Indian colonel killed in a gun battle with militants, while two soldiers were seriously injured.”

  14. Richard Dawkins compares Texas ‘clock boy’ Ahmed Mohamed to ISIS killer (CNN, Nov 25, 2015)
    http://edition.cnn.com/2015/11/25/europe/uk-richard-dawkins-clock-boy-ahmed-mohamed/index.html

“Eminent British scientist Richard Dawkins has sparked a firestorm of criticism on social media by comparing Ahmed Mohamed, the Texas teenager whose school project was mistaken for a bomb, to a young ISIS killer.

Dawkins, a leading voice in the atheist movement, was reacting to news that the Mohamed family was demanding $15 million in damages and an apology from city and school officials in Irving, Texas, over their treatment of the teen.

In September, the 14-year-old, who is Muslim, was detained, questioned and hauled off in handcuffs after he brought a handmade clock to school, which a teacher thought could have been a bomb.

“Don’t call him ‘clock boy’ since he never made a clock. Hoax Boy, having hoaxed his way into the White House, now wants $15M in addition!” Dawkins tweeted Tuesday….”

  15. Sudan Accuses Egyptian Police of Abusing Its Citizens (abcnews, Nov 25, 2015)

“The Sudanese Embassy in Cairo has accused Egyptian authorities of unlawfully detaining and beating 16 Sudanese over the past six weeks, charges denied by Egypt.

Embassy spokesman Mohamed Gebara said Wednesday that the 16 were also “psychologically tortured,” without providing further details. He was elaborating on an earlier report by the Sudanese state-run news agency SUNA, which quoted Khartoum’s foreign minister, Ibrahim Ghandour, as saying he had proof of unspecified abuses.

Egypt’s Foreign Ministry denied the accusations on Wednesday.

Gebara says he is surprised by Cairo’s denial. He says the two countries had agreed on Tuesday to investigate the matter.

Twenty Sudanese migrants were shot dead in separate incidents this month along the Egyptian border as they tried to cross into Israel during shootouts between Egyptian forces and smugglers.”

  16. Paris Attacks Boost Popularity of French Tricolor Flag (abcnews, Nov 25, 2015)
    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/paris-attacks-boost-popularity-french-tricolor-flag-35417571

“A young Parisian who once might have stopped and stared in distaste now walks nonchalantly past a large Tricolor flag flapping in the November rain on a home in Paris’ 8th district.

Flying the French flag in a garden — for decades considered bad taste or a symbol of ultranationalism — is now back in favor with the French after the deadly attacks on Paris.

The famed blue, white and red stripes are ubiquitous — dangling from Parisian balconies, lining avenues, plastered across shop and restaurant windows. Printers are buckling under the demand and even running out.

Paris’ main flag-maker has recorded a 500 percent increase in Tricolor sales since the Nov. 13 attacks, claimed by the Islamic State group, that killed 130 people and left hundreds wounded.

“It normally means, you know, you’re ultra-rightwing. But since the attacks, it’s become a symbol for solidarity with the victims,” said 23-year-old Lucas Leblanc, one of millions who shaded his Facebook profile photo in tricolor in remembrance of the victims.

“Why should our flag have all these negative connotations, anyway?” he asked.

A poll taken last week suggests that almost two-thirds of French now see it as a positive thing to fly a flag outside a home or in a garden. Until now, flags were mostly raised on official buildings or flag poles — not on private residences.

“It’s incredible. There has only been two other times in French history that the flag has been popular on this scale. One was (when France won) the World Cup in 1998. The other, the end of the second World War,” Herve Burg, director of flagmaker Paris Drapeaux, told The Associated Press.

Burg says he received so many orders that the factory ink machine ran out.

French President Francois Hollande is adding to the flag comeback. On Wednesday, he asked French citizens to fly the Tricolor at their homes for Friday’s official commemoration ceremony for Paris attack victims at the Invalides monument.

Hollande said it would be a way for people who can’t attend to pay tribute to those who lost their lives in the worst attacks in France in recent times.

The French flag — known as the Tricolor from its “blue, white and red” bands — first appeared in 1794 after the French Revolution did away with the monarchy. The white band in the middle represented royalty and the red and blue the city of Paris, or the people. But the original meaning of republican unity gradually eroded in the late 20th century.

“There’s always been the powerful revolutionary meaning behind France’s flag, but since the 1970s, it was, like in Britain, taken over by the far right,” said Robert Gildea, historian at Oxford University.

Jean Dolande, a 50-year-old artist, said he would have never dreamt of hoisting a Tricolor in his garden, but he did so following January’s attacks on the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo and a kosher supermarket in Paris that killed 20 people, including the three attackers.

“It always meant the love of our country. But it got re-appropriated and had fascist connotations,” Dolande said. “This year was a game-changer.”

In the aftermath of the Paris attacks, many famous landmarks, including the Eiffel Tower, were illuminated in the colors to honor the victims, as were monuments elsewhere, such as Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate.

But not all are convinced this flag-bearing is a good thing. Some believe it will boost French National Front leader Marine Le Pen and her anti-immigration policies in December’s regional election.

“The resurgence of the French flag is going to benefit one person: Le Pen. She’s up 10 percent in the polls since last week,” said architect Jean-Francois Daures. “The flag waving encourages racism and intolerance and is a step back into the past.””

  17. Turkish military says did not know downed jet was Russian

Turkey’s military said Wednesday it did not know the warplane it downed on the Syrian border was Russian and that it was ready for “all kinds of cooperation” with Moscow’s army authorities following the incident.

Turkish military says did not know downed jet was Russian

In a statement issued after tension surged between Ankara and Moscow and Turkey’s NATO allies appealed for calm, the Turkish armed forces also said they had made significant efforts to find and rescue the pilots after the jet was shot down.

The surviving pilot of the Su-24 bomber said earlier that no warning had been given in the incident Tuesday and the aircraft did not violate the Turkish air space, although Turkey insists that it gave 10 warnings in five minutes.

“The nationality of the plane was not known… and the rules of engagement were automatically used,” the Turkish military said in its statement.

It added that had invited Russian defence and military attaches to its Ankara headquarters to explain the incident.

It also informed Moscow’s military authorities of its readiness for “all kinds of cooperation,” the statement added.
