  1. USA – Novelists boycott NY gala in protest of honoring Charlie Hebdo protest

Six prominent novelists are protesting against the honoring of French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo with a freedom of expression award

Six prominent novelists are boycotting a New York literary gala next week to protest against French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo being honored with a freedom of expression award.

Australia’s Peter Carey, Canada’s Michael Ondaatje, British-born Taiye Selasi, and Americans Teju Cole, Rachel Kushner and Francine Prose have withdrawn from the May 5 PEN American Center gala.

They informed PEN over the weekend of their decision not to attend the glittering annual event, which is also a key fund-raiser, a month after the Charlie Hebdo award was first announced.

“They’ve all been in touch with us to say they didn’t feel comfortable attending,” PEN executive director Suzanne Nossel said.

Carey, a two-times Booker Prize winner, told The New York Times that the award stepped beyond PEN’s traditional role of protecting freedom of expression against government oppression.

“A hideous crime was committed, but was it a freedom-of-speech issue for PEN America to be self-righteous about?” the newspaper quoted him as saying in an email interview.

“All this is complicated by PEN’s seeming blindness to the cultural arrogance of the French nation, which does not recognize its moral obligation to a large and disempowered segment of their population.”

On January 7, two brothers claiming to avenge the magazine’s depiction of the Prophet Mohammed — offensive to Muslims — stormed the Charlie Hebdo offices in Paris, killing 12 people.

Gerard Biard, Charlie Hebdo’s editor in chief, and essayist Jean-Baptiste Thoret, who escaped the attack by arriving late to work, will accept the PEN/Toni and James C. Goodale Freedom of Expression Courage Award on behalf of their colleagues.

    • Read the Letters and Comments of PEN Writers Protesting the Charlie Hebdo Award

      By Glenn Greenwald

Below are the key documents giving rise to the controversy that has erupted inside PEN America over the award the group is bestowing on Charlie Hebdo, which you can read about here. They include the key correspondence between the writer Deborah Eisenberg (pictured, above left) and PEN’s Executive Director Suzanne Nossel (above, right), which sparked the controversy, as well as the full comment given to the Intercept by the writer Teju Cole, who has withdrawn as a table head. The Intercept has also submitted several questions to Nossel, which are posted below; we will prominently post PEN’s responses as soon as they are received.

  3. LIBYA – ISIS kills five journalists working for Libyan TV channel

The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) militants have slit the throats of five journalists working for a Libyan TV station in the eastern part of the country, an army commander said on Monday.

The reporters had been missing since August, when they left the eastern city Tobruk after covering the inauguration of the country’s elected parliament to travel to Benghazi. Their route took them through Derna, a militant Islamist hotspot.

Faraj al-Barassi, a district army commander in eastern Libya, said militants loyal to ISIS were responsible for the killing of the journalists, whose bodies were found outside the eastern city of al-Bayda.

“Five bodies with slit throats were found today in the Green Mountain forests,” Barrasi told Reuters, referring to a sparsely populated area east of Benghazi. He did not say when the five journalists were believed to have been killed.

The reporters – four Libyans and one Egyptian – had been working for Barqa TV, an eastern television supporting federalism for eastern Libya, other journalists said.

Brussels-based International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), a group promoting press freedom, said the reporters had been kidnapped at an ISIS checkpoint and were killed “recently”.

“We are deeply shocked by this brutal slaughter,” said IFJ president Jim Boumelha. “ISIS (Islamic State) aims to horrify but we can only feel great sorrow and further resolve to see the killers held responsible for their crimes.”

Militants loyal to Islamic State have exploited a security vacuum in Libya, where two governments and parliaments allied to host of armed groups are fighting each other on several fronts four years after the ousting of Muammar Qaddafi.

The internationally recognized government has been based in the east since losing control of the capital Tripoli in August to a rival faction, which has set up its own administration.

The House of Representatives, Libya’s elected parliament, has also been based in the east since its inauguration in August.

ISIS, the group which has seized parts of Syria and Iraq, has claimed responsibility for the killing of 30 Ethiopian and 21 Egyptian Christians as well as an attack on a Tripoli hotel, embassies and oilfields.

6 TV crew members found dead in Libya

Libya :A Libyan government Spokesman says six crew members from a private TV network were found dead, eight months after they were abducted.

Hatem al-Aribi told The Associated Press that the bodies were found on Monday in Bayda the temporary home of Libya’s internationally-recognized government.

The capital, Tripoli, was overrun last year by militias allied with Islamist factions who then set up their own government and revived the previous parliament. The elected parliament now meets in the eastern city of Tobruk and the executive branch operates from nearby Bayda.

Al-Aribi says that the six, from the Barqa TV network, were abducted in August while travelling to their hometown of Ajdabiya after covering the opening of the parliament in Tobruk.

  4. BOSNIA – Gunman Shouting Allahu Akbar in Bosnia Storms Police Station

A gunman stormed into a police station in a northeastern Bosnian town shouting “Allahu akbar” on Monday, killing a policeman and wounding two others, authorities said.

The gunman was killed during the attack in the town of Zvornik, police spokeswoman Aleksandra Simojlovic told The Associated Press. “Allahu Akbar” is the Arabic phrase for “God is great.”

Zvornik is a town in the Bosnian Serb part of the country and it is located at the border with Serbia. During the 1992-95 war, almost all Muslims were expelled or killed as part of a Serb campaign. Only a few thousand returned to the region after the war.

Security Minister Dragan Mektic said the gunman stormed into the building with an automatic rifle and was killed in crossfire with police inside.

The Bosnian Serb government will hold an overnight emergency session and the regional president, Milorad Dodik, told Bosnian Serb TV he believes the attacker was instructed by someone else even though he acted alone.

Bosnian Serb police chief Dragan Lukac called on citizens to help police.

“We will fight against them and we will never forgive them, but police can’t do it alone. We need the citizens to help,” Lukac said, without specifying who he meant by “them.”

The imam of the Zvornik mosque, Mustafa Muharemovic, condemned the attack.

Seven police officers injured in violent clash near Mondawmin Mall

Seven police officers were injured Monday afternoon in a violent clash with demonstrators that began near Mondawmin Mall and spread across West Baltimore. One officer was unresponsive and others suffered broken bones, police spokesman Eric Kowalczyk said.

  7. UK – Miliband: Labour Would Outlaw Islamophobia

Ed Miliband has pledged to make Islamophobia a criminal offence in the UK if he becomes Prime Minister.

In an interview with the Muslim News website, Miliband said a Labour government would make Islamophobia an “aggravated crime”.

“We are going to make sure it is marked on people’s records with the police to make sure they root out Islamophobia as a hate crime,” he said, adding: “We are going to change the law on this so we make it absolutely clear of our abhorrence of hate crime and Islamophobia. It will be the first time that the police will record Islamophobic attacks right across the country.”

The Labour leader also pledged that a future Labour government would recognise a Palestinian State, saying he would have supported recognition at last year’s UN vote.
