Links between a fugitive NHS surgeon and commanders of the Taliban suicide cell who massacred 132 school children are being investigated by Pakistani intelligence officers.

Mirza Tariq Ali, who fled the UK last year to join jihadi forces, is said to be a senior Taliban commander hiding in the tribal areas of Pakistan with those who controlled the six gunmen responsible for Pakistan’s worst terrorist atrocity.

An associate in the UK of controversial hate preacher Anjem Choudary, the 39 year-old recently appeared in a chilling Taliban recruitment video threatening the Pakistan Army.

4. UN Asks Israel to Pay Lebanon $850 M for Oil Spill

UNITED NATIONS — The U.N. General Assembly overwhelmingly approved a resolution Friday asking Israel to pay Lebanon over $850 million in damages for an oil spill caused by an Israeli air force attack on oil storage tanks during its war with Hezbollah in July 2006.

The assembly voted 170-6 in favor of the resolution, with three abstentions. Israel, the United States, Canada, Australia, Micronesia and Marshall Islands voted “no.”

General Assembly resolutions are not legally binding but they do reflect world opinion.

The archbishop of Bamberg, Ludwig Schick has called for a distancing from “Pegida”. (Patriotic Europeans against the islamisation of the West). On German Cultural radio last Thursday, the leading catholic clergyman accused the movement of being ruled by Racism, Nationalism and and diffuse fears. “Christians are not allowed to participate” he emphasised.

In Dresden last Monday, 15000 “Pegida” supporters went into the streets. In other German cities too there have been anti-islamic rallies for the last few weeks. According to security forces, they (Pegida) are being led by groups from the radical right.

    I see there is a suggestion in some quarters that Dante took inspiration from medieval Islamic sources, specifically Mahomet’s magic donkey ride and visit to seven heavens. Go figure.

      • I wish I could get the Ciardi audio. I’ve looked around the internet but it’s not anywhere for free – I think it was the Smithsonian that was selling it.

        I’m no great student, but have a soft spot for the translation of The Inferno I had in high school, by Dorothy Sayers. Like Ciardi, she keeps the rhyme and meter (foot-stomper that I am, I don’t see the point without that) but her language is self-consciously archaic, which people complain about. I notice that Ciardi gets dinged for being too muscularly American or whatever, lacking nuance. I think it has verve, and it keeps me reading, not always easy with the many often obscure allusions.

        There used to be a number of audio versions on what used to be the Pirate Bay (which last week at least it was still possible to access in roundabout ways).

  4. 4 Guantanamo detenees transfered to AFGHANISTAN

    The Department of Defense announced today the repatriation of Shawali Khan, Khi Ali Gul, Abdul Ghani, and Mohammed Zahir from the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay to the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.

    As directed by the president’s Jan. 22, 2009, executive order, the interagency Guantanamo Review Task Force conducted a comprehensive review of this case. As a result of that review, which examined a number of factors, including security issues, these men were unanimously approved for transfer by the six departments and agencies comprising the task force.

    In accordance with statutory requirements, the secretary of defense informed Congress of the United States’ intent to transfer these individuals and of his determination that this transfer meets the statutory standard.

    The United States is grateful to the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan for its willingness to support ongoing U.S. efforts to close the Guantanamo Bay detention facility. The United States coordinated with the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to ensure these transfers took place consistent with appropriate security and humane treatment measures.

    Today, 132 detainees remain at Guantanamo Bay.

    It was a poignant moment when one lady first left flowers at Martin Place, she stood back with tears rolling down her cheeks, momentarily searching for an answer that never came, before she quietly wandered off into the crowd.

    Then another young Asian girl left some yellow flowers alongside hers, then another and another, then a stream of tearful people were suddenly contributing to a massive carpet of flowers. It’s still growing.

    I was fixated by the spontaneity, the impulsive unrehearsed order of it all. Then, mid afternoon, no fewer than 10 Muslim women in scarves arrived with more flowers. Some were crying others were praying.

    I glanced to the left to see six Muslim elders, including a diminutive Grand Mufti, one wore a Santa hat and all were in pastel loin cloths.

    I searched for the Muslim youth, but there were none to be seen. Not one of the bearded boys who rampaged our streets smashing police cars and waving behead non-Muslim signs. My cynical mind went into overdrive, how can this be?

    It seemed obvious really, ten or so Muslim women don’t just turn up all at the same time mid-afternoon per chance, neither do six or so clerics. It was a prearranged symbol of Islamic condolence and it seemed so alien to the spontaneous passion of the others.

    The order had gone out, “Get down there now, cameras are everywhere, and you women take flowers, tell all the boys to be there too.”

    Well, the women are conditioned to obedience but the boys are not… “You jokin’ aren’t ya man? We been celebratin’ a huge setback for the Kaffirs here and you want us to bring flowers and shit? Yeah, right.”

    As I watched the clerics a moment of unabashed bigotry bubbled to the surface… what exactly is this manufactured grief? Perhaps for a shattered nation? Could it be for Katrina and Tori? Their families?

    What sorrow could they possibly feel for these reviled infidels when they are already instructed to strike at their throats and lop their fingers?

    At least the boys were honest. They all knew their demented brother, as did the clerics, and they knew exactly where he obtained his sawn-off shotgun from.

    Anyway, how could the boys possibly pay their respects to him without appearing to grieve for us?

  6. It might be some comfort to those who lost everything in the bombing raids this man helped target. There’s justice in it.

    If the monster who bombed the Boston Marathon had been executed promptly afterwards, we wouldn’t be compelled to expose our wounds for “victim statements” that won’t mean a thing in the end.

    A lethal dose of roach powder in the center of the Boston Common would’ve been more civilized than subjecting us to a media circus. “How do you feel seeing him again,” is the first question. Don’t sound vindictive, that doesn’t go over well.

    How many cameras were trained on that Russian harpy who made an appearance for the pre-trial opener? That’s more subtle but not all that different for consumers of perverse entertainment.

  10. SWEDEN – 2 car bombs rock southern Sweden’s city of Malmo

    COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) – Swedish police say two car bombs have shattered dozens of windows in a multiethnic district of Malmo, Sweden’s third largest city.

    Police spokeswoman Linda Pleym says no one was injured by Saturday’s pre-dawn explosions in Rosengaard, a district dominated by immigrants from Iraq, Kosovo, Bosnia and Lebanon. One car bomb exploded at the foot of a building, the other in a parking lot nearby.

    It was unclear who was behind the two explosions and if they were connected. No arrests were immediately made.

    The blasts were the latest in a series that has rocked the southern Sweden city in recent months. Earlier this year, a downtown building that houses a court house, police and prosecution offices and a detention center was twice targeted. No one was injured.

  13. US approves $3 billion sale of tanks, armored vehicles to Iraq

    The US State Department has approved possible sales of tanks and armored vehicles worth approximately $3 billion to Iraq, where Islamic State extremists have been active, the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has revealed.

    “The State Department has made a determination approving a possible Foreign Military Sale to Iraq for M1A1 Abrams tanks and associated equipment, parts and logistical support for an estimated cost of $2.4 billion,” the DSCA said in a press release Friday.

    Another press release, issued by the agency on the same day, said that the US State Department has also approved “Foreign Military Sale to Iraq for M1151A1 Up-Armored High Mobility Multi-Purpose Wheeled Vehicles [Humvees] and associated equipment, parts and logistical support for an estimated cost of $579 million”.

  14. German Council of Jews chairman condemns “immensely dangerous” PEGIDA movement

    In light of recent marches by the controversial PEGIDA movement, Germany’s Central Council of Jews (ZdJ) has come to the defense of Muslims in Germany. Chairman Josef Schuster has warned to not underestimate the group.

    The newly-elected chairman of the council, Josef Schuster, said in Saturday’s edition of the German newspaper Die Welt that fear of Islamistic terrorism is being “exploited” to vilify an entire religion. “This is completely unacceptable,” said Schuster.

    “Of course Islamist extremism needs to be taken as seriously as other extremist trends,” he said, “But the security authorities have long been aware.”

    To draw the conclusion from so few Islamists that Islam is going to become Germany’s state religion, is “as absurd as when we conclude that, due to the existence of right-wing extremism, the Nazi dictatorship will be rebuilt tomorrow,” Schuster added.

  15. French police shoot dead Mulim knifeman who was shouting Islamic slogans
    Investigation under way after man attacks officers in police station in central France

    French police on Saturday shot dead a man who attacked them with a knife in a police station while shouting “Allahu Akbar” (“allah is the greatest ” in Arabic), a source said.

    The man injured the face of an officer at the entrance to the police station in Joue-les-Tours near the city of Tours in central France and injured two other before he was shot, the interior ministry said.

    Anti-terrorist investigators were probing the incident, a judicial source said.

    The perpetrator was a French citizen born in Burundi in 1994 and known to police for common crimes, a source close to the case told AFP, adding that the attacker “shouted ‘Allahu Akbar’ from the moment he entered until his last breath.”

    According to a statement by the interior ministry, the assailant was around 20 years of age, and was “killed (by) police officers present using their issued firearms.”

    The attacker was not on any watch lists maintained by France’s main domestic intelligence service, the General Directorate for Internal Security, the source involved in the inquiry said.

    But the source noted the assailant’s brother was known to security agencies for his radical convictions and had at one point planned to travel to Syria.

    “The investigation is leading towards and attack on police forces on radical Islamist motives,” another source close the case said.

    Officials said the condition of the three wounded police officers was stable.

  19. 2 NYPD cops shot dead ‘execution style’ in Brooklyn

    Two uniformed NYPD officers were shot dead — execution style — as they sat in their marked police car on a Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, street corner.

    According to preliminary reports, both officers were working overtime as part of an anti-terrorism drill when they were shot point-blank by a single gunman who approached their car at the corner of Myrtle and Tompkins avenues.

    “It’s an execution,” one law enforcement source told The Post of the 3 p.m. shooting.

    The gunman just started “pumping bullets” into the patrol car, another source said.

    The suspected gunman fled to a nearby subway station at Myrtle and Willoughby avenues, where he was fatally shot. Preliminary reports were unclear on whether he was shot by police or his own hand.
