Sydney gunman was ‘wanted in Iran’ (BBC, Dec 16, 2014)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-30502094

“Iran says it requested 14 years ago the extradition of Man Haron Monis – the gunman behind the Sydney siege – but Australia refused to hand him over.

The head of Iran’s police, Gen Ismail Ahmadi Moghaddam, told reporters that Monis was wanted for fraud at the time.

He said Monis had fled to Australia via Malaysia in the late 1990s.

Monis and two hostages were shot dead on Tuesday morning, when commandos stormed the Sydney cafe where he had been holding captives for 16 hours.

Gen Moghaddam said Monis was known in Iran as “Manteqi”.

“In 1996, he was the manager of a travel agency and committed fraud,” the general told reporters. “He then fled to Malaysia and from there, to Australia under a fake name.”

He added that “since we did not have an agreement on the extradition of criminals with Australia, the Australian police refused to extradite him”….”

  2. Kenya ‘deregisters’ NGOs in anti-terror clampdown (BBC, Dec 16, 2014)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-30494259

“Kenya has deregistered 510 non-governmental organisations (NGOs), including 15 accused of links with terrorism, an official has said.

The government has also frozen their bank accounts and revoked the work permits of foreign employees.

The move follows a heated debate in Kenya over a controversial new security bill aimed at fighting militants.

The al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabab group has been increasingly targeting Kenya for attack.

The organisations had been deregistered because of their failure to submit financial records, said Henry Ochido, the deputy head of the government-appointed NGO Co-ordination Board, which oversees their activities.

Fifteen are suspected of money-laundering and financing “terrorism”, Mr Ochido told the BBC.

Some of them were linked to the 1998 twin bombings of the US embassies in Kenya and neighbouring Tanzania, he added.

Mr Ochido declined to name the organisations, saying investigations were ongoing….”

  3. Spain IS: Seven held in raids on women recruiters (BBC, Dec 16, 2014)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-30492509

“Seven people have been detained in Spain and Morocco in raids targeting a network recruiting women to join Islamic State (IS) in Syria and Iraq, officials say.

Four people were held after raids in the two Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla in North Africa. There was another arrest in Barcelona.

Moroccan authorities picked up two others in Castillejos, near Ceuta.

Spain’s enclaves are seen as particularly attractive to jihadists.

Ceuta and Melilla are Europe’s only land borders with Africa, offering a potential route to conflict zones.

The two enclaves are also very popular destinations for sub-Saharan migrants trying to enter Europe.

Although only an estimated 100 Islamists have left Spain to join the ranks of IS, up to 2,000 Moroccans are estimated by the authorities to have travelled to fight in Syria and Iraq.

Among the seven arrested were four women and a minor, Spanish authorities said on Tuesday….”

  4. Yemen car bomb attacks ‘kill 15 children’ (BBC, Dec 16, 2014)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-30504641

“At least 25 people, among them 15 children, have been killed in twin car bomb attack in the central Yemeni province of Bayda, reports say.

The children were inside a school bus that was passing a checkpoint manned by Shia Houthi rebels in the Radaa area when the first bomb exploded.

The second one went off soon afterwards near the home of a Houthi leader.

The rebels blamed Sunni jihadist militants from al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) for the blasts.

They have been fighting in Radaa since the Houthis overran the AQAP stronghold in October, a month after taking control of the capital, Sanaa….”
