A group of people has been taken hostage in a cafe in Sydney, Australia’s Martin Place, where a black flag with Arabic writing was placed in a window, Australian television channels reported.
Police have cleared the area, adjacent to the nation’s central bank, and sealed off streets in the central business district, Channel Seven News said.
The network showed images of people inside the Lindt cafe with their arms up, pressed against the window. A black flag with white lettering, identified by the network as an Islamic State flag, was displayed in the window.
New South Wales police force confirmed an operation was underway in Martin Place, and declined to provide further details.
A phone message left out of hours at the Zurich-based media office for Chocoladefabriken Lindt & Sprungli AG wasn’t immediately returned.
