Islam continues to disgust: Links 2 for Nov. 24 – 2014

1. A French jihadist left the Islamic State just two weeks after arriving because he could not handle the terror group’s strict no-smoking policy.

Flavien Moreau, a Muslim convert with 13 previous convictions, including assault and armed robbery, moved to Syria to join the radical group in 2012, but returned to France after just a couple of weeks, and was arrested.

Appearing in court, Moreau said: “I really struggled with not smoking. It was forbidden by the katiba [group of Islamist militants]. I had brought Nicorette gum with me, but it wasn’t enough. I left my gun with my emir and I left.”

France 24reports that Moreau is of South Korean descent and was adopted by a French family at the age of two. He was sentenced to seven years imprisonment today for his brief involvement with Islamic State.

(This puts a whole new twist on “walking a mile for a Camel”)

2. Egyptian honour killing: Brother cuts pregnant sister’s throat

Arrested for the murder of his sister, the young man is reported as telling the police that honour is very important for families and there is no tolerance for actions which spoil reputations of families.

The report states that he accompanied his sister, identified as Hana’a, to the wedding of a cousin.

“While she was dancing with the ladies around the bride she fell on the floor,” he is quoted as saying.

Women at the wedding checked her and found that she is pregnant.

“My sister is not married. I was angry and asked for a doctor. The doctor came and confirmed that she is three months pregnant,” he said.

“I couldn’t bear the shock. I took a knife and cut her throat.”

3. Interview with film maker who did the 2 flags experiment on Berkley campus. Israeli and Islamic State.

(The disease of thought Ari refers to on campuses might be explained by this Bill Whittle Clip quite well)

4. Preacher at Al Aqsa Mosque inciting religious and geopolitical hatred, mostly against the usual unbeliever categories of course.

(I wonder if perhaps this is why Israel tends to limit who can go there from time to time)

5. Here is a link to a news report from last night on the truck full of explosives that rammed the gates at Fort Sam. It is interesting to see how the story evolved in a few hours.

6. Communists in Montreal march against ‘Islamophobia’ as well as ‘against empires’. I think that may be one of the dictionary-perfect definitions of an oxymoron. The largest empire in the world is the 50 some Islamic states which seeks world domination for its religion and is reprinted at the United Nations by the Organization of Islamic States.

7. I really don’t know what to make of this video. I did download it and slow it down and you can clearly see the guy getting hit on the head with the rock and blood shooting out from his ear after the first guy says allah hu ackbar and so on. I dont know if its a prank or torture or what this is, other than a great example of Islamic culture.

I am still debating uploading the slowed down version in case anyone wants to see it. Meanwhile, anyone who knows how to download a video from Youtube can grab this one and play it in VLC Media player, sliding the video playback speed slider all the way to the left (in the playback menu) and you can see it frame by frame.

Thank you M., Yucki, Buck and all who sent in materials. More to come.

  2. Boko Haram crisis: ‘Militant traders’ raid Nigeria town (BBC, Nov 24, 2014)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-30185933

“Hundreds of residents and soldiers are fleeing a northern Nigerian town attacked by militant Islamists disguised as traders, officials say.

Shootings and explosions had rocked the trading town of Damasak, near Niger’s border, a senator told the BBC.

“Nigerian security forces only surface after the deadly attacks and terrorise an already terrorised people by installing road blocks and searching homes,” he added in a statement issued on his behalf by Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI), the main body representing Muslim clerics in Nigeria.

The militants entered Damasak carrying containers which they claimed were full of goods for sale when were, in fact, stuffed with AK-47 rifles, local government official Mohammed Damasak said, AFP news agency reports….”

Boko Haram fighters seized a nearby fishing village on Thursday, reportedly killing 48 people.

On Sunday, Nigeria’s top Islamic leader accused soldiers of “terrorising”, rather than defending, civilians.

“Soldiers take to their heels and abandon their bases, arms, ammunition and other military hardware on the approach of the insurgents,” said the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar.

  3. The Islamic State (IS) released a video of its fighters speaking from the center of Beiji in Iraq’s Salah al-Din province, refuting claims by the Iraqi government that troops seized control over the city.

  4. UK – Birmingham terror chief: Shopping centres could be targeted by terrorists

Birmingham’s anti terror police chief has said that the force believes terrorists will target crowded shopping centres to maximise damage.

West Midlands Police Assistant Chief Constable Marcus Beale is today addressing business leaders in the city – and warning them staff working in shops are the first line of defence.

The event is part of a national campaign, where officers will brief more than 6,000 people at 80 venues including schools, universities, airports, shopping centres, cinemas and farms in a bid to engage the public and businesses in preventing terrorism.

The terror threat level in the UK was recently raised from substantial to severe, meaning an attack is “highly likely”, against a backdrop of increasing concerns over hundreds of aspiring British jihadis travelling to Iraq and Syria to learn terrorist “tradecraft”.

Meanwhile, sniffer dogs will be hunting large amounts of money at ports, airports and railway stations to prevent cash leaving the UK for terrorist purposes.

Other events will follow, including work with farmers to ensure fertilisers – that can be adapted into explosives – are stored securely and charities to advise people about safe ways to donate money.

Asst Chf Const Beale said: “Experience from around the world shows us that terrorists will target busy, crowded places to ensure that attacks have a maximum impact.

    • Scotland – Police have 100 Scottish Islamic State sympathisers on their radar amid warnings Britain faces an attack

DETECTIVES are monitoring up to 100 Islamic State sympathisers in Scotland amid a warning that the UK faces imminent attack.

Police said a number of Scots are among more than 500 UK residents who have travelled to Syria since the start of the bloody conflict.

Officers have uncovered evidence of terrorist fund raising here and yesterday urged the public only to donate to registered charities.

And they warned people to be on their guard with the threat of attack coming from organised groups to highly-motivated loners.

The current UK threat level is “Severe” meaning an attack is imminent.

Airports and shopping centres are vulnerable, especially in the run up to Christmas.

Terrorists have also historically struck on the public transport network in cities such as Madrid and London.

Livingstone said the terror landscape has changed beyond recognition in his lifetime.

      • DAILY MAIL – Terror suspect linked to Anjem Choudary boasts of ‘making a mockery’ of MI5 after ‘breezing’ across Europe to join ISIS – when police let him out on bail

        – Siddhartha Dhar was arrested in September with eight other men
        – Dhar and the others were questioned on suspicion of encouraging terrorism
        – He was released on police bail to reappear in December but fled the country in late September
        – Today Dhar posted tweets boasting about how he could ‘breeze’ across Europe to Syria to join ISIS fighters because of a ‘shoddy security system’

Dhar and nine other men, including Choudary, were held in raids in London and the Midlands in September on suspicion of supporting al-Muhajiroun.

They were also questioned on suspicion of encouraging terrorism before being released on bail and ordered to return to police stations in December. Police wanted to impose strict bail conditions to prevent them associating with each other, promoting extremism or going overseas.

But Dhar fled to Syria with his wife and four young children the day after he was released. The details emerged at a recent bail hearing at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in which Choudary and other suspects demanded the return of their identity documents.

Asked why Dhar was not in court, prosecutor Luke Ponte said he boarded a coach for Paris on September 27.

He said: ‘He failed to comply with the conditions to surrender his travel documents to police. It’s my understanding that he is no longer in the jurisdiction and that he is currently in Syria.’

The court refused to hand back the identity documents.

Former shadow home secretary David Davis said at the time that it ‘beggars belief’ that Dhar could escape so easily. ‘To allow him to surrender his own passport, rather than take it off him, seems at best careless and at worse a terrible error of judgment,’ he added.

  5. Egyptian Leader Meets Pope, Italian Premier (abcnews, Nov 24, 2014)
    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/francis-meets-egyptian-president-european-trip-27137308

“Pope Francis and the Egyptian president exchanged warm greetings during a private meeting Monday in which the pontiff emphasized Egypt’s role in establishing peace in the Middle East.

Francis and Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi met for about 20 minutes at the Vatican on el-Sissi’s first visit to Europe since taking office in June. Francis shook el-Sissi’s hands, declaring his happiness at meeting the Egyptian leader, while el-Sissi expressed through a translator his pleasure at meeting “the great man that you are.”

The two men also exchanged gifts: A papal medallion and a papal document “The Joy of the Gospel” for el-Sissi and an inlaid silver box with a mirrored lid for Francis.

The Vatican said the meeting focused on the need for dialogue to bring an end to the conflicts in the region as well as promote peaceful co-existence, religious freedom and inter-religious dialogue.

El-Sissi met later with Italian Premier Matteo Renzi, with the two leaders affirming their commitment to fighting terrorism and establishing stability in the Mediterranean region.

Renzi identified Libya, mired in conflict, as key to tackling both issues, as well as immigration as the point of departure for the vast majority of smugglers’ boats bringing migrants to Italy.

El-Sissi meets Tuesday with Italian and Egyptian entrepreneurs before heading to Paris. His visit was expected to focus on investment, fighting terrorism and the flow of migrants from conflicts in the Middle East and Africa toward Europe.”

  6. Syrian on Hunger Strike Outside Greek Parliament (abcnews, Nov 24, 2014)
    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/syrian-hunger-strike-greek-parliament-27138647

“More than 200 Syrian civil war refugees started a hunger strike Monday in front of Greece’s Parliament, urging the government to grant them temporary working and residence rights.

The protesters began gathering last week at Athens’ main square, complaining that refugees are being forced to pay exorbitant black-market rates to live in squalid apartments in Athens.

“People are living in bad conditions. We get (temporary) travel documents, but we can’t go anywhere. We can’t work, or go to hospital, or rent a place to live,” said Khaldoon Fadel, a 31-year-old former resident of Damascus, who joined the hunger strike.

The hunger strikers said they were only eating sugar. Several dozen of them sat on the marble-paved sidewalk with strips of box tape covering their mouths, and packages of flatbread placed in front of them.

“For an (apartment) that would cost 250 euros ($310) to rent per month, we have to pay 1,000 euros ($1,245),” Fadel said.

Fadel, who had worked as a chain store manager and fashion designer for women’s clothing before fleeing Syria, made the hazardous journey across Turkey and by boat illegally to the Greek island of Kos.

Greece is a busy entry point for immigrants and refugees seeking entry to the European Union. The financial crisis-hit country has seen a spike in the number of Syrians crossing by boat illegally from nearby Turkey.

Authorities expect a three-fold increase in illegal immigration this year, compared with 2013, with nearly two-thirds of the illegal traffic now coming from Syria.

On Sunday, the regional governor of greater Athens, Rena Dourou, visited the protesters and said she had contacted the Greek Orthodox Church and the government to try and make arrangements to provide temporary shelter for Syrian refugees.”

  7. Islamic State Group Recruits, Exploits Children (abcnews, Nov 24, 2014)
    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/islamic-state-group-recruits-exploits-children-27141136

“Teenagers carrying weapons stand at checkpoints and busy intersections in Iraq’s second-largest city, Mosul. Patched onto the left arms of their black uniforms are the logos of the Islamic Police.

In Raqqa, the Islamic State group’s de facto capital in Syria, boys attend training camp and religious courses before heading off to fight. Others serve as cooks or guards at the extremists’ headquarters or as spies, informing on people in their neighborhoods.

Across the vast region under IS control, the group is actively conscripting children for battle and committing abuses against the most vulnerable at a young age, according to a growing body of evidence assembled from residents, activists, independent experts and human rights groups…..”
