Gunmen from the Somali militant group al-Shabab say they have attacked a bus in northern Kenya, killing 28 people.
The bus was travelling to the capital, Nairobi, when it was stopped in Mandera county, not far from the Somali border.
Gunmen separated out non-Muslims by asking passengers to read from the Koran, officials and witnesses said. Those who failed were then shot in the head.
A statement on a website linked to the Islamist group carried a statement saying the attack was carried out in retaliation for security raids on mosques in the coastal city of Mombasa earlier this week.

“When we got down, passengers were separated according to Somali and non-Somalis,” Mr Mahat said.

Some Somalis were shot after pleading with the gunmen to spare non-Somali passengers, Mr Mahat added.

Detainee Transfer Announced
The Department of Defense announced today the transfer of Muhammed Murdi Issa Al-Zahrani from the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay to the government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
On Oct. 3, a Periodic Review Board consisting of representatives from the Departments of Defense, Homeland Security, Justice, and State; the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence determined continued law of war detention of Al-Zahrani does not remain necessary to protect against a continuing significant threat to the security of the United States. As a result of that review, which examined a number of factors, including security issues, Al-Zahrani was recommended for transfer by consensus of the six departments and agencies comprising the Periodic Review Board.
“In the past three weeks, the Department of Defense has transferred seven detainees. These transfers include both the first Yemenis since 2010 and two transfers involving detainees made eligible by the Periodic Review Board process. A total of 13 detainees have been transferred this year. This strikes a responsible balance and reflects the careful deliberation the Secretary of Defense brings to the transfer process, and follows a rigorous process in the interagency to review several items including security review prior to any transfer,” said Mr. Paul Lewis, Special Envoy for Guantanamo Detention Closure
In accordance with statutory requirements, the secretary of defense informed Congress of the United States’ intent to transfer this individual and of his determination that this transfer meets the statutory standard.
The Periodic Review Board process was established by the president’s March 7, 2011 Executive Order (EO) 13567.
The United States is grateful to the government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for its willingness to support ongoing U.S. efforts to close the Guantanamo Bay detention facility. The United States coordinated with the government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to ensure this transfer took place consistent with appropriate security and humane treatment measures.
Today, 142 detainees remain at Guantanamo Bay.

At least 474 foreign teachers, again mostly from Turkey, have arrived at Concept’s Ohio schools between 2005 and 2013. The schools are collecting about $45 million in state funds annually to educate 6,600 children in kindergarten through high school.
Ohio teachers, meanwhile, say plenty of qualified teachers are available for jobs being filled by the foreigners, especially since about 40,000 are still without teaching jobs because of the recession.
Concept officials defend the practice. They say it’s the only way to find qualified math and science instructors, adding that the international teachers add to the cultural experience of students.
“These teachers are hired legally and are here legally,” company vice president Salim Ucan said. “It’s not like we’re sneaking them across the borders. These are highly qualified people who have gone through the legal process to come here and make a difference in the lives of kids.”

U.S. Prisons Churning Out Thousands Of Radicalized Inmates
Back in 2006, then FBI director Robert Mueller prophetically described the radical Islamist conversion machine operating throughout U.S. prisons, to a Senate committee. He said that prisons were a “fertile ground” for Islamic extremists, and that they targeted inmates for introduction to the militant Wahhabi and Salafist strains of Islam.

A New York City corrections department source told the New York Post: “It’s a disgrace that taxpayers are funding Muslim chaplains who not only have criminal records, but also are promoting violence.”

Berlin says 550 “Germans” joined jihadist cause in Syria and Iraq
Hundreds of “Germans” have left their home country to fight alongside jihadists in Syria and Iraq, Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said.
“We estimate 550. Just a few days ago we had 450,” the minister told German television channel Phoenix on Friday.
“These young people… were radicalised in Germany, within this society. That’s why prevention must be accompanied by repression,” he added.
Most of those who have joined the Islamic State of Syria and Iraq (ISIS) organization’s jihadist cause are men, although some women have also travelled to the two war-torn countries.
De Maiziere said authorities are keeping a close watch on some 230 more people who are considered potential threats on German soil.
“We cannot exclude, and in certain cases it’s actually quite possible, that they are preparing an attack,” the minister said.
In mid-October, Germany announced new measures to prevent its citizens from travelling to join the jihadist cause in Iraq and Syria, including confiscating their identity papers.
Concerns are mounting in Europe over the growing national security threat posed by jihadists returning from war-ravaged Syria and Iraq.

I tried researching the subject of the ban on DDT and its effect on malaria in 3rd world countries, only to encounter absolute denial from the left wing. They claim with confidence that DDT was never banned for anti-malarial applications and that the only reason malaria made such a comeback was because of DDT-immunity on the part of the malaria bugs themselves. The CBC, for instance, presents Rachel Carson as the mother of the environmental movement and a great benefactor of mankind, who opened up our eyes and saved millions of lives in the process. SWEDEN – Up to 300 Swedes fighting with Islamic State: official
As many as 300 Swedes could have joined the Islamic State insurgency, whose brutal tactics in Iraq and Syria have shocked the world, Sweden’s intelligence chief said Saturday.
“A hundred cases of people who have left to join the fighting have been confirmed, then there are the presumed cases…, and then there are those that have not been counted, which brings the total to between 250 and 300,” said the head of the intelligence services, Anders Thornberg, on SR public radio.
Thornberg said the flow of youths leaving to become jihadists in Syria was rapidly rising.
“A certain number of young Swedish men are leaving and training in camps, learning to become terrorists to use explosives and weapons,” he said.
“They’re going beyond the limits of human behaviour,” he said. “They’re fighting and killing other people.”
On their return to Sweden, some are seen as ready to commit terrorist acts at home and have been placed under strict surveillance, the intelligence official added.
Sweden announced late October that it would pass a law banning citizens from taking part in foreign armed conflicts. The previous month, the EU coordinator for anti-terrorism, Gilles de Kerchove, estimated that 3,000 Europeans have joined the ultra-hardline Islamic State group, which has caused global revulsion with its regular videotaped beheadings of hostages.
