  1. U.N. panel details ISIS abuses in Syria, says they amount to war crimes (CNN, Nov 14, 2014)
    http://edition.cnn.com/2014/11/14/world/meast/isis-war-crimes/index.html

“With images of violence and torture coming out of Syria daily, a U.N. panel on Friday stated what many people consider obvious: ISIS has committed war crimes and crimes against humanity, and leaders of the militant group should be held accountable by organizations such as the International Criminal Court.

The U.N. Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria based its conclusions on more than 300 firsthand accounts and included photos and videos of violence and victims, a statement said.

“Those that fled consistently described being subjected to acts that (terrorize) and aim to silence the population,” said Paulo Pinheiro, chairman of the commission.

The commission issued a paper titled “Rule of Terror: Living Under ISIS in Syria” that described previously known ISIS tactics such as killing, enslavement, rape and sexual slavery. But the report provides details about other, less sensational abuses, such as the penalty for smoking or having tattoos.

“ISIS also carries out amputations and lashings in public spaces in its areas of control,” the paper said.

Men have had their hands amputated for allegedly committing theft. The group has also amputated the fingers of men caught smoking, according to the commission’s report…..”

  2. Canadian faces extradition for Paris synagogue bomb (BBC, Nov 15, 2014)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-30063814

“A Canadian academic accused of a deadly 1980 bombing outside a synagogue in Paris is expected to arrive in France after losing an extradition battle.

University professor Hassan Diab was being transferred to an airport in Montreal on Friday to await his transfer, according to reports.

He lost a six-year legal battle to stay in Canada.

Lebanese-born Mr Diab is the main suspect in the Paris bombing on Rue Copernic, which killed four people.

The move to extradite him was triggered by a ruling in Canada’s Supreme Court.

On Thursday, the court turned down the 60-year-old’s final attempt to prevent his extradition, effectively ensuring he would be compelled to face trial in France.

In a statement, Mr Diab said his failed legal bid was “a very sad day for me, my family and supporters, and the state of extradition law in Canada”.

Supporters say the sociology professor is not guilty of the bombing and could be convicted on tainted evidence.

But the French embassy in Ottawa said Mr Diab will be presumed innocent….”

    • Makes me think of Hitler saying something to the effect of, ‘Who remembers the Armenians?’
      Apparently no one in Congress.
      Shame, shame

Muslims found Americas before Columbus says Turkey’s Erdogan (BBC, Nov 15, 2014)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-30067490

“Muslims discovered the Americas more than three centuries before Christopher Columbus, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said.

He made the claim during a conference of Latin American Muslim leaders in Istanbul, pointing to a diary entry in which Columbus mentioned a mosque on a hill in Cuba.

Mr Erdogan also said “Muslim sailors arrived in America in 1178”.

He said he was willing to build a mosque at the site Columbus identified.

The Turkish president – whose AK Party is rooted in political Islam – gave no further evidence to back up his theory, instead stating: “Contacts between Latin America and Islam date back to the 12th Century.”

Columbus is widely believed to have discovered the Americas in 1492, while trying to find a new route to India.

But in a disputed article published in 1996, historian Youssef Mroueh said Columbus’ entry was proof that Muslims had reached the Americas first and that “the religion of Islam was widespread”.

However many scholars believe the reference is metaphorical, describing an aspect of the mountain that resembled part of a mosque.

No Islamic structures have been found in America that pre-date Columbus.

Mr Erdogan said he thought “a mosque would go perfectly on the hill today” and that he would like to discuss building this with Cuba.

The first people to reach the Americas came from Asia. They are believed to have crossed the Behring Strait about 15,000 years ago.

The first European visitors to North America are widely thought to have been Norse explorers, about 500 years before Columbus.”

    • Erdogan has apparently no knowledge of the Vikings who predate both Columbus and also his purported Muslim discoverers.

Here’s the same story in a slightly different version in Turkey’s Today’s Zaman:

      http://www.todayszaman.com/anasayfa_erdogan-says-america-discovered-by-muslims-wants-mosque-on-cuba-hill_364466.html

Apparently Turkey has already formally offered to build a mosque in Cuba but their efforts have been rejected by the Cuban authorities. No doubt their efforts are noble since we all know that poverty has been eradicated in Turkey – hence no need for the Turkish government to spend more money on its own country.

I posted a comment to this article in Today’s Zaman but so far it hasn’t been published. Although this site is anti-Erdogan it is still very much pro-Islam – and dislikes any hint of anything that will upset that apple-cart.

  4. Everything I’ve heard spoken by Louie Gohmert leads me to believe he’s honest, direct, straightforward, clear-thinking, and an American patriot. I hope we hear a lot more from him in the future. He seems to be one of the few who “gets it.”

The images he shows of the crucified Armenian girls are horrifying. I’ve seen them before but the shock does not abate.

    • From what people who know him tell me, you are spot on. If we had a hundred more of him in positions of influence, we may have a shot.
