Egypt, after Sinai attacks, postpones talks on Gaza’s future
Egypt announced on Sunday it was postponing talks in Cairo on cementing the Gaza war ceasefire after closing its border with the Palestinian enclave in response to deadly attacks in the Sinai peninsula.
Two attacks on Friday in Sinai, which borders the Gaza Strip and Israel, killed at least 33 Egyptian security personnel in some of the worst anti-state violence since former army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi ousted Islamist President Mohamed Mursi of the Muslim Brotherhood last year.
Citing “the state of emergency in the border area between Egypt and Gaza” and the closure on Friday of the Rafah crossing, a senior Egyptian diplomat said indirect talks between Israel and Palestinian factions would not resume in the coming week.
No new date for the negotiations was announced.
[…]An Israeli official said Israel had yet to receive word from Cairo on a postponement.

Gaza official refutes accusation over Sinai attack
Interior Ministry in Gaza refuted in a statement on Saturday all accusations stated that Gaza is behind attacks on Sinai by affirming that southern border with Egypt are subjected to tight supervision and strict security measures.
Spokesman of interior ministry, Iyad al-Buzom, confirmed that the Egypt’s national security is a top priority for Palestinian, he added “we will not allow the security of our borders to be harmed.” He said that the Gaza Strip had nothing to do with events unfolding in Egypt, and the underground tunnels on the border with Egypt had already become something of the past.
Al-Buzom called on Egypt to exclude the Gaza Strip from any post-attack measures that could worsen the suffering of its population who have been suffering an all-out Israeli blockade since 2007.
The Interior Ministry described the Friday attack against the Egyptian troops as a “despicable crime”, offering its condolences to the Egyptian people and government.
Egyptian media said that a deadly attack by unknown hit on Friday afternoon the army military and security checkpoints in Sinai, killing 26 soldiers.
After the attack Egypt shut down on Saturday the Rafah crossing point on the border with Gaza in front of the Palestinian passengers until further notice due to the unsettled security situation in Sinai.

Egypt: Palestinians are responsible for the Sinai terror attacks
In spite of Hamas denying its involvement, Cairo insists that Palestinian bodies are the ones behind the recent attacks in Sinai
Even though Hamas was quick to deny its involvement in the terror arracks which killed 33 soldiers and officers over the weekend, Cairo clarifies that Palestinian bodies are the ones behind the attacks. The security forces began an extensive operation in order to establish a partition zone in the northern part of the peninsula.
In spite of the fact that Hamas rushed to deny its involvement in the attacks in Sinai yesterday (Sat), the Egyptian deputy internal affairs minister states today that Palestinian bodies participated in the attack which killed 33 soldiers and officers in Arish.
The officer told Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper that the solution to the current wave of terror will be the establishment of a partition zone in the northern Sinai Peninsula. Additional sources have confirmed that a military operation which attempts to isolate northern Sinai has begun.
Apache helicopters are currently attacking terror targets in the area.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi addressed his nation yesterday after the supreme military council meeting in Cairo, which assembled due to the attack. “Behind the attack stands a foreign body which assisted terrorists”, he stated.
“This is an attempt to break Egypt and its military, they will not succeed in doing so”, el-Sisi continued, stressing that his country faces a long and blood-filled campaign. “In the fight against terror cells soldiers have been killed and more will be killed in the future”.

Is Libya a Proxy War?
[…]A dangerous scenario looms ahead. Backed by Egypt and the UAE, the Libyan government is extending the narrative of its counter-terrorism struggle against jihadists in Benghazi to include what is effectively a multi-sided civil war in Tripoli and the western mountains – of which Islamists are only one player. It is a multifaceted struggle that is only partially understood, and for which the literature on proxy interventions does not fully account.
[…]the UAE has been both a partner and an instigator of Egyptian intervention. The UAE’s activism is informed by a broader concern about the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood and the growing influence of its rival Qatar in Libya’s post-Gaddafi order.
[…]For its part, Qatar has reportedly stepped up its assistance to the Dawn faction, allegedly acting in coordination with Turkey and Sudan. As a forthcoming edited volume on the history of the Libyan Revolution makes clear, it was Qatar’s growing support of the network of Islamist revolutionaries clustered around the Doha-based cleric Ali Sallabi that pushed Jibril and Nayed to solicit greater backing from the UAE, France and the United States. Qatari aid also induced splits in the opposition as its Ismail Sallabi – Ali’s more radical younger brother and the commander of a Benghazi based militia – tussled with Hifter over weapons shipments. The two are now bitter foes in the ongoing fighting in Benghazi.
[…]The alleged support from Qatar has produced an escalatory response from Operation Dignity forces, with dire consequences for civilians caught in the crossfire. As early as June, Hifter asked Turkish and Qatari citizens to leave eastern Libya within 48 hours, claiming “those with Qatari and Turkish passports are intelligence agents and consultants supporting the Islamist forces.”
[…]What is remarkable about Gulf intervention is the brazenness of it and that the opposing Gulf states – UAE and Qatar – are both members of the U.S.-led anti-Islamic State coalition. Together with Egypt, the UAE, Qatar and Turkey were among the signatories of a recent 13-country statement pledging non-interference in Libya’s internal affairs. But such oaths ring hollow in the face of recent airstrikes and the under-the-table shipments of funds and weapons.

Qatar Was Elected to the U.N. Human Rights Council, but That Could Be Just the Beginning
Middle East watchers are sounding alarm bells over reported behind-the-scenes maneuverings underway to have the former prime minister of Qatar – a key sponsor of the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas – appointed secretary-general of the United Nations when Ban Ki-Moon’s term expires in 2016.
[…]Qatar has been accused of financially supporting radical opposition groups in Syria and Iraq and has allowed private fundraising for Al Qaeda, the Islamic State group and other jihadist organizations. The reported extensive Qatari terrorist connections were surveyed in the New Republic earlier this month.
Weinberg told TheBlaze that the Muslim Brotherhood’s spiritual leader, Yusuf al-Qaradawi, would have been placed on a U.S. terrorism financing blacklist were it not for the intervention of Qatari rulers.
[…]Britain’s Telegraph newspaper reported Sunday that Qatar’s current emir was “looking into politically compensating his former prime minister” by helping him secure the secretary-general job.
Just this week, Qatar was elected to the U.N. Human Rights Council, a move that was criticized by the head of U.N. Watch, a Geneva-based watchdog group that monitors the U.N., who called it an “awful message.”
[…]The New York Times last month ran a report on Qatar’s efforts to influence U.S. policymakers by funding the Brookings Institution.

Suspicion hangs over death of U.S. journalist in Turkey
[…]The death of an American journalist who worked in the Middle East has come under suspicion because she had claimed days before her death that the Turkish intelligence services had threatened her over her coverage of the siege of the Syrian city of Kobani.
[…]Just days before her death, she had expressed concerns to colleagues and later on camera that she could be arrested by Turkish officials over her reporting. She disclosed that ISIS jihadists were being smuggled into Turkey and back into Syria in the back of humanitarian aid vehicles.
[…]“We were some of the first people on the ground – if not the first people – to get that story of … militants going in through the Turkish border. … I’ve got images of them in World Food Organization trucks. It was very apparent that they were militants by their beards, by the clothes they wore, and they were going in there with NGO trucks,” she said.

German police clash with far-right protesters
German riot police Sunday clashed with far-right hooligans who rallied against Islamist extremism, with authorities using water cannons and tear gas against the rock-throwing protesters.
At least 2,500 hardline football fans from across Germany had amassed under the banner “Hooligans against Salafists” in the western city of Cologne, drawing some 500 leftist and anti-fascist counter protesters.
Tensions escalated and right-wing protesters repeatedly yelled “foreigners out!” reported national news agency DPA and witnesses sending updates on Twitter.
Police in helmets and riot gear used batons, pepper spray and water cannons against the right-wing protesters who hurled rocks, bottles and fireworks at them.
Earlier this month, Kurds in Germany clashed with radical Muslims in the northern city of Hamburg and elsewhere in street clashes fuelled by the conflict involving the jihadist group Islamic State in northern Iraq and Syria.
