An attempt to keep up with events links 1 for Oct. 1 – 2014

Events are playing out so fast that it outpaces analysis and even reportage in some cases.

1. The Canadian Government is asking for the people of Canada to directly offer thier feelings about Canadian involvement in fighting the Islamic State in Iraq. Lowell Green has been running a survey and it has been very interesting. Anyone who wants to listen can go to www.cfra.com and click today’s date for the Lowell Green Show and listen to the archive. As I type this, there is about 10 minutes left of the show.

2. Netanyahu’s speech at the UN was interesting in that he seems to be bridging the gap between the reality of the Islamic motives behind international terror and the Obama/leftist narrative of directionless ‘violent extremism’. This speech is 36 minutes but actually is worth the time. Much is said that needed saying. It may be one of those speeches history records as a significant reference to current events and indicator of how foreign policy and geopolitical force may be applied. Robert Spencer’s article on it can be found here.

3. An interesting bit of archeology related to Vlad Tepes, the man after whom, this blog was named.

4. The US government is seeking to force Apple and Google to give them your (illegally?) collected data in a manner which would obliterate your 4th amendment rights.

This is an important battle to watch in many ways. The outcome and participants are very important as well as interesting. It is great to see that Google and Apple, both ‘evil corporations’ are acting in the interests of people’s privacy rights far more than the government of the US despite the fact that  it is constitutionally mandated to do so.

I would go as far as to say this court case represents a total role reversal where private companies are fighting for the rights of the individual citizen against the Government which seeks to erase them. Remember, this blog is anti-Islam because Islam is totalitarian not because its Islam. If we end up with some other kind of totalitarian system then there is no point in fighting islam and ignoring the fascists at the front door.

5. Islamic State beheads seven men, three women in Syria: monitor

  1. Pope urged Europe to open its doors to refugeesMuslims

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis urged Europe to open its doors to refugees Wednesday as he marked the anniversary of a deadly migrant shipwreck off Sicily by meeting with survivors and relatives of the victims.

Some 368 people — most of them Eritrean and Syrian asylum-seekers — drowned Oct. 3, 2013 when their smugglers’ boat capsized off the island of Lampedusa. The tragedy jolted the EU and prompted Italy to beef up its Mediterranean sea patrols, which have rescued some 160,000 people this year alone.

On Wednesday, nearly 40 survivors and relatives of the Lampedusa victims met with Francis in the Vatican auditorium before heading to Lampedusa for ceremonies to commemorate the anniversary.

Francis, who has frequently lamented the plight of refugees, said he was speechless, unable to find the words to comfort people who had faced such tragedy.

“I ask all the men and women of Europe to open the doors of their hearts,” Francis said. “I want to let you know I’m near you, I pray for you, and I pray that doors that are closed are opened.”

Francis visited Lampedusa months before the October tragedy to show solidarity with migrants following the death of a dozen would-be refugees over the summer. During a Mass on the island, he denounced the “globalization of indifference” that greets migrants who risk their lives in search of safety and a better life for themselves.

Members of the refugee delegation thanked Francis for his support and urged him to back their efforts to recover remains of the victims; some of the bodies haven’t been turned over to relatives.

“It was good, but we need more help,” said Smliva Zeregherghis, an Eritrean who was part of the delegation. His wife, Wine, was killed in the shipwreck as she attempted to join him in Britain, where he has been working as a manual laborer for six years.

  2. 2/ I’m glad you linked to the whole thing, Eeyore. As a whole it’s pretty darn good. And you get to see – mostly hear! – my personal envoy sitting in the peanut gallery.

I first heard the speech last night and have chosen to postpone reading reviews until I’ve thought it out for myself. I’ll be checking out how much got through and to whom.

Listen to him tactfully try to sideline the USA as mediator for the duration of this Enemy’s term. Enhancing the image of the Tents-with-Flags as genuine Partners for Peace.

Fact is, they’re local and that trumps global. Plus trust is less dicey with players whose own skin is staked on the same game.

Because Oslo is as obsolete as the state of Syria. And the good offices of European diplomats really aren’t so good for Israel. Or even fair to all parties.

But how could they be? When judenhass is so endemic on the Continent that it’s become wondrously plastic, a shape-shifting force. The nations united seldom are, with one exception: when they’re gripped with florid hatred for the Jew among nations, Israel.

well, tough luck…ain’t ya jealous? our Old Man’s better than yours, nyah, nyah, nyah…

  3. Moderate Syrian Rebels Carry ISIL Flags in Protest to Coalition Airstrikes

The Ahrar al-Sham “moderate” rebel group that belongs to the “Islamic Front” conglomerate of “moderate” Islamist brigades, which is mainly supported – both financially and militarily – by Saudi Arabia, came out today in support of the “Islamic State” (aka ISIL or ISIS) and al-Qaeda’s Jabhat al-Nusra terror groups against the US-led coalition. Protestors can be seen in Houla (Homs province) carrying ISIL flags and shouting slogans against the establishment of a secular state.

  4. Egypt militant group threatens deadly attacks during Eid holiday

Egypt’s deadliest militant group has vowed fresh deadly attacks against security forces next week during the country’s major Muslim feast.

In a video released online, Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis, threatened killings against the police would take place Saturday, the first day of the Eid Al-Adha feast, saying it “will be a black day on the infidel interior minister and his associates.”

The video showed a map of Egypt with graphic bombs exploding, along with the group’s black flag logo.

Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis (Supporters of Jerusalem) has orchestrated some of the worst militant attacks against police and army forces since the army-backed ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013, including a failed assassination attempt on Egypt’s interior minister in Cairo last year.

Earlier in September, the group claimed the killing of six policemen by a roadside bomb in the Sinai Peninsula, where the army is fighting an Islamist insurgency.

The Sinai-based group said its attacks are to avenge a state crackdown against Islamists after Morsi’s removal that saw hundreds killed and thousands jailed.

In August, the group claimed the beheading of four men accused of providing Israel with intelligence for an airstrike that killed three of its fighters.

The attack later prompted the Islamic State, a militant Sunni group that seized large swathes of Syria and Iraq, and which Egyptian officials say has ties with Sinai militants, to urge Egypt’s militants to press ahead with attacks against security forces, including decapitations.

  5. Ebola outbreak: ‘Five infected every hour’ in Sierra Leone (BBC, Oct 2, 2014)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-29453755

“A leading charity has warned that a rate of five new Ebola cases an hour in Sierra Leone means healthcare demands are far outstripping supply. Save the Children said there were 765 new cases of Ebola reported in the West African state last week, while there are only 327 beds in the country. Experts and politicians are set to meet in London to debate a global response to the crisis. It is the world’s worst outbreak of the virus, killing 3,338 people so far. There have been 7,178 confirmed cases, with Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea suffering the most.

Save the Children says Ebola is spreading across Sierra Leone at a “terrifying rate”, with the number of new cases being recorded doubling every few weeks. It said that even as health authorities got on top of the outbreak in one area, it spread to another. The scale of the disease is also “massively unreported” according to the charity, because “untold numbers of children are dying anonymously at home or in the streets”….”

  6. Somalia battles al-Shabab for Galgala mountains (BBC, Oct 1, 2014)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-29444355

“Troops in northern Somalia have battled al-Shabab Islamist militants for the Galgala mountains, with both sides claiming to have won.

The fighters have been holding the northern mountains for several years.

An al-Shabab spokesman told the BBC that after a heavy battle they still controlled the territory in Puntland.

The al-Qaeda aligned group is mainly based in southern and central Somalia where the African Union force is heading a major offensive against it….”

  7. Afghan troops killed in Kabul suicide attack (BBC, Oct 1, 2014)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-29437932

“At least seven Afghan soldiers have died and many were injured after a suicide bomber targeted a bus carrying troops in the Afghan capital Kabul.

A second bus was hit by a suicide bomber elsewhere in the city, injuring two soldiers and two civilians.

The Taliban said they had carried out the attacks.

The blasts come a day after Afghan and US officials signed a deal letting US troops stay in Afghanistan after the end of 2014.

The agreement was authorised by new Afghan president Ashraf Ghani, who was sworn in on Monday.

On that same day, two bombs killed at least 15 people in Kabul and Paktia provinces….”

  8. #4 It is surprising the short length of time it takes for a government to turn oppressive and for most people to accept the oppression. Most of the outrage is coming from the older generations while the younger are acting as if nothing is happening.
