Shiite Huthi anti-government rebels man a checkpoint on the outskirts of Sanaa on September 21, 2014

Sanaa (AFP) – Shiite rebels seized the Yemeni government headquarters Sunday and the premier resigned as violence raged despite a UN announcement of a power-sharing deal to end days of fighting, officials said.

Prime Minister Mohamed Basindawa stepped aside, accusing President Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi of being “autocratic”, senior officials said.

Goulburn Jail cancels Muslim prayer meetings as prisoners go berserk

PRISON officers in riot gear have used tear gas to control maximum security inmates who tore apart Goulburn Jail in a racially fuelled riot described as the biggest in 10 years.

With shouts of “Allah Akbar”, prisoners armed with homemade weapons threatened guards and smashed through an internal fence at the state’s toughest jail, which was in lockdown yesterday.

“Bombs and mortar fire killed 13 people in Shiite areas in and around Baghdad on Sunday, as Iraqi security forces said they succeeded in breaking a siege on soldiers who had been surrounded by Islamic State militants west of Baghdad. Police officials said three mortar shells landed on a residential area in Sabaa al-Bour, a town just north of Baghdad, killing six, including a 12-year old-boy. Several cars were damaged in the attack, which wounded 17. Later, a bomb blast in a commercial street killed four people and wounded 11 in the capital’s northeastern district of Shaab.

At night, a bomb explosion at a commercial street in the Shiite part of Baghdad’s district of Bayaa killed three people and wounded seven others, said police. Medical officials confirmed the casualty tolls. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief the media. Attacks against Shiite civilians are a common tactic of the Islamic State militant group, which considers Shiites heretics. The group has captured large chunks of territory in western and northern Iraq as well as in Syria…”

  3. Yemen’s Bloody Weekend Leaves 100s Dead And Rebels On The Rise

The Houthi rebel movement is a growing power in troubled Yemen. Their rise is part of a feud that stretches back a decade, and the bloodshed is unlikely to end here.

[…]The US has repeatedly expressed concern over the growth of the Houthi movement in Yemen, publicly worrying that the group is sponsored by Iran. And while there is some evidence of cooperation and support from Iran, it is unclear what exactly that money buys in Yemen, where many groups accept outside funding without ever acting as proxies. Although tempting to see the Houthis as part of larger Sunni-Shi’a war, this is a local war with a regional dimension. This means that in Yemen, just as in Syria and Iraq, the US now finds itself opposing multiple sides of an increasingly violent conflict.

The Houthis emerged from the weekend much stronger than many had believed they were. But they are far from dominant. Other groups still have enough men and weapons to fight back. And in Yemen, alliances shift frequently.
