    • Note the vast regions that are surrounded by ISIS but not claimed by them, any resistance in those areas has been isolated and can to a very large extent left to die on the vine. When/if the become important enough they will be taken otherwise they can wait until more important regions have been conquered. This is a variation of the island hopping technique MacArthur used in the Pacific in WWII.

  1. Diaspora social network cannot stop IS posts (BBC, Aug 21, 2014)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-28882042

“The team behind a social network being used by Islamic State (IS) militants has admitted it cannot prevent the spread of extremist material. Diaspora is a decentralised network with data stored on many private servers which cannot be controlled by any single administrator.

IS is believed to have switched to Diaspora after Twitter upped its efforts to block accounts. Diaspora’s creators said they were “concerned” about the activities.

In a blog post, they wrote: “Various newspapers have reported that members of the Islamic State (IS) have set up accounts on Diaspora to promote the group’s activities. “In the past, they have used Twitter and other platforms, and are now migrating to free and open source software.”

The post explained that Diaspora’s network is spread across several independent servers – known as pods – which are not controlled by the Diaspora team….”

  2. New US strikes in Iraq after IS Foley video (BBC, Aug 21, 2014)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-28877376

“US aircraft have launched fresh strikes against Islamic State (IS) militants in northern Iraq, despite threats from the group to kill a second American captive in retribution for continued attacks.

US Navy fighters and drones provided air cover to Kurdish and Iraqi forces battling IS near the city of Mosul.

On Tuesday the group released a video showing the beheading of journalist James Foley, who went missing in 2012.

In it, the militants threatened to kill another US reporter they are holding.

But since the video was released, American forces have conducted 14 new strikes near the Mosul dam, a key facility recaptured from IS militants earlier this week.

The raids provided air cover as Kurdish and Iraqi forces pushed into the hills south-west of the site, Kurdish sources said. US officials said they had successfully eliminated vehicles and other targets belonging to IS.

The US has been carrying out strikes against IS – which has been seizing large parts of Syria and Iraq – since 8 August…”

  3. Boko Haram crisis: Nigeria militants ‘seize police academy’ (BBC, Aug 21, 2014)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-28884665

“Northern Nigeria’s riot police training academy has been overrun by Boko Haram Islamist militants, a witness in Borno state has told the BBC. Shots were heard after the militants arrived in three armoured vehicles and on dozens of motorcycles, he said.

A police spokesman confirmed the attack while a senior security source said it had not been possible to communicate with the academy since Wednesday. The Liman Kara college is near Gwoza town, seized by Boko Haram this month.

Thousands have been killed across north-eastern Nigeria since Boko Haram launched its violent campaign for an Islamic state in 2009….”

  4. Libya Flights Canceled Amid Militia Fighting (abcnews, Aug 21, 2014)
    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/flights-libya-canceled-amid-militia-fighting-25070019

“Tunisia and Egypt on Thursday canceled flights to neighboring Libya citing security concerns, as militias battle in the capital Tripoli and the eastern city of Benghazi, where a renegade general has launched airstrikes on Islamist militia barracks.

Tunisia’s Transportation Ministry on Thursday said flights coming from Libya were canceled, citing the need to ensure travelers’ safety in accordance with international standards. Egyptian airport officials said flights from Cairo to Libya have been canceled, though service from second city Alexandria would continue. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the press.

Libya is witnessing its worst spasm of violence since Moammar Gadhafi was toppled in 2011. Many of the rebel brigades which helped overthrow the longtime dictator have since been transformed into powerful militias linked to the country’s feuding political blocs.

The fighting in recent weeks has largely destroyed the main international airport in Tripoli, which has been closed for two months, and shut down Benghazi’s Benina airport, as diplomats and other foreigners have fled the country….”

  5. Kuwait Questions 2 on US Terror-Funding List (abcnews, Aug 21, 2014)
    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/kuwait-questions-us-terror-funding-list-25069170

“Kuwaiti police briefly detained and questioned two men designated by the U.S. Treasury Department as financiers of terror groups operating in Iraq and Syria, a lawyer and a security official said Thursday, amid mounting pressure from Washington on its Gulf ally to curb the flow of such funds.

U.S. Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence David Cohen has described Kuwait as the “epicenter” of fundraising for terrorist groups in Syria and earlier this month called on the Kuwaiti government to do more to disrupt such financing.

Kuwait’s ambassador to Washington says his country is committed to fighting terrorism.

A Kuwaiti police officer told The Associated Press that Shafi al-Ajmi was detained Sunday — for about seven hours — and Hajaj al-Ajmi was detained late Wednesday — for about 10 hours — after returning from trips to neighboring Gulf countries. He said the two were detained as a precautionary measure and questioned about the U.S. Treasury Department’s accusations. He said they may be banned from traveling.

He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release the information.

Their lawyer Mohammed al-Jumia told the AP his clients only raised charitable donations for Syrians. He said that when his clients traveled to Syria they met with members of the Western-backed Free Syrian Army, the mainstream rebel group fighting to overthrow President Bashar Assad….”
