UPDATE: Ali Shahi charged after Sunwing plane makes emergency landing in Toronto

A 25-year-old Canadian man has been charged after he allegedly made “direct threats” to the safety of a flight to Panama City this morning, resulting in the plane returning to Toronto for an emergency landing.

Flight 772 turned around after 45 minutes in the air for the emergency landing at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport. It was escorted by two U.S. F-16 jets.

Ali Shahi, a Canadian citizen, has been charged with:

– Mischief to property.

– Mischief interfering of the lawful enjoyment of property.

– Uttering threats.

– Endangering the safety of an aircraft.

He is being held in custody until a bail hearing.

The two U.S. F-16 fighter jets from Toledo, Ohio, were dispatched to escort the plane back to Toronto…

Ottawa: 13-year-old boy charged in west end sexual assaults

A 13-year-old has been arrested in connection with recent sex assaults reported in the west end.

Police say a female victim was assaulted around 2:30 Wednesday afternoon in the area of Grenon and Noren Avenues.

The boy was arrested shortly after she called police.

Officers believe this suspect is also linked to assaults that took place July 14th on Dumaurier Avenue and the area of Richmond and Bayshore.

(Our tipster points out that this school happens to be right in the area of where these assaults took place)

Here is a heart warming story about that school from March 20015:

Two teachers at the Abraar Islamic school in Ottawa were suspended yesterday pending an investigation into the encouragement or incitement of hatred against Jews expressed in a young student’s violence-laden writing project.

Principal Aisha Sherazi said the seven-member school board and
administration were “shocked” by teacher involvement in the project that was brought to her attention by the Citizen yesterday morning, and decided at an emergency meeting to suspend the instructors.

  1. Sierra Leone hunts Ebola patient kidnapped in Freetown (BBC, July 25, 2014)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-28485041

“A hunt has been launched in Sierra Leone’s capital, Freetown, for a woman with Ebola who was forcibly removed from hospital by her relatives. Radio stations around the country are appealing for help to find the 32-year-old who is being described as a “risk to all”. She is the first Freetown resident to have tested positive for the virus.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s health minister has confirmed that a Liberian man has died of Ebola in Lagos. According to the Reuters news agency, he collapsed on arrival in Lagos on Sunday and was taken from the airport and put in quarantine at a hospital in the Nigerian city.

Since February, more than 660 people have died of Ebola in West Africa – the world’s deadliest outbreak to date…..”

  2. Afghan conflict: 15 killed in ‘Taliban attack’ on buses (BBC, July 25, 2014)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-28481282

“Suspected Taliban gunmen have killed 15 people who were travelling by road in the central Afghan province of Ghor.

The attackers stopped two minibuses overnight, ordered the passengers out and shot them dead, according to the province’s police chief.

The victims – including three women and a child – were from the minority Hazara community, which has been targeted by the Taliban in the past.

Growing numbers of civilians have been killed in Afghanistan this year.

According to the UN, nearly 5,000 civilians were killed in the first six months of 2014 – a rise of almost a quarter on the same period in 2013.

Abdul Hai Khatibi, a spokesman for the governor of Ghor province, told the AFP news agency that the attackers had “ordered all passengers to stand in one line, and then they shot them dead one by one”.

The spokesman is quoted as saying that one man managed to flee the attack…..”

Central African Republic rebel chief rejects ceasefire (BBC/video, July 25, 2014)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-28487894

“Seleka rebels in the Central African Republic have rejected a ceasefire deal and demanded the country be partitioned between Muslims and Christians.

In an interview with the BBC’s Andrew Harding, Seleka military chief Joseph Zoundeiko said his forces would ignore the ceasefire agreed on Thursday.

He said the deal had been negotiated without proper input from the military wing of the former Seleka alliance.

Almost a quarter of the 4.6 million population have fled their homes.

The peace agreement between mainly Muslim Seleka rebels and the largely Christian anti-Balaka militia was signed in the Congolese capital of Brazzaville.

Muslims have been forced to flee the capital city and most of the west of the country, in what rights groups described as ethnic cleansing.

Both sides have been accused of war crimes such as torture and unlawful killing….”

  4. I dont know – this one is supposed to be funny – or at least playing on a lighter note. However, whenever you read about the rapidly increasing numbers of turds it is hard to appreciate the subtle attempt at humor. (Was there any at all?)

‘Challenging’ Ramadan in Norway as day lasts 20 hours (BBC/video, July 23, 2014)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-28373119
“Norway is often referred to as ‘the land of the midnight sun’. For Muslims here, fasting during Ramadan is a particular challenge. Most believe in waiting till dusk to break their fast – not easy when the day is 20 hours long. There are over 200,000 Muslims in Norway and their numbers are increasing. BBC Urdu’s Qandeel Shaam reports on how the unusually long days there affect the community.”

  5. 1/ Maybe someone insulted Islam and Ali overheard. Mitigating circumstances, in that case, and another passenger to be charged with a hate crime. In future, passengers could be warned against breaking Shariah law as part of the pre-flight safety demonstration.

Ali’s Dad knows the drill. But it’s getting hard to tell if the instinctive and utter denial of responsibility is Arab or Canadian:

“I am sorry for what happened on the flight, but Ali is not at fault,” he said. “I blame the police and health system…”

  6. Man accused of making threat aboard Sunwing flight ‘not at fault,’ father says

The father of a 25-year-old Canadian man whose alleged threats forced a Panama-bound plane to return to Toronto Friday says his son has mental health issues and is “not at fault” for what happened.

In a statement released Friday night, Sadegh Shahi said his son, Ali Shahi, has had “mental issues,” including depression, anorexia and bulimia since he was 16.

“I am sorry for what happened on the flight, but Ali is not at fault. I blame the police and health system,” Shahi said, adding that his son “never got the support that he needed.”

He added that “24 times in the last 3 years we have called police.”

Shahi also said his son, who was escorted off the plane by a tactical team of police officers, “has never been violent but he is never happy. If he says something, he never means it, he can’t help himself.”

He said his son also has a gambling addiction.

Police said Ali Shahi has been charged with mischief to property, mischief interfering with lawful enjoyment of property, uttering threats and endangering the safety of an aircraft.

The Sunwing plane was forced to turn around when a passenger said he wanted to bomb Canada, eyewitnesses reported.

Flight 772 departed from Toronto at 7 a.m. Friday, heading toward Panama City with 181 passengers, two infants and a crew of six on board.

Passenger Bettina Bathe told CTV Toronto the incident unfolded not long after takeoff when a flight attendant came by to pass out headsets.

“He basically just tore a strip off her, explaining how expensive the cigarettes are here in Canada, he hates Canada,” Bathe said.

“Then he said, with great expression using his hands, ‘I just want to bomb Canada.'”

Following procedure, the flight was then diverted back to Toronto’s Pearson International Airport, about 45 minutes into the flight, escorted by two fighter jets.

One security expert said the video footage of tactical officers on the plane further shows that the so-called “SWAT team culture” has gotten “a little bit out of hand.”
