2. Suicide bombers, fighting kill 36 in northern Iraq

Twin suicide bombings targeting Iraq’s Shabak minority and fighting between security forces and militants killed 36 people in the northern province of Nineveh on Friday, officials said.

Provincial capital Mosul is one of Iraq’s most dangerous cities, with well-entrenched militant groups carrying out almost daily attacks.

The two suicide bombers blew up vehicles in the Shabak village of Al-Muwaffaqiyah, east of the city, killing four people and wounding 45, police and medical officials said.

Most of Iraq’s 30,000 Shabaks follow a blend of Shia Islam and local beliefs viewed as heretical by Sunni extremists, and they have been periodically targeted for attack.

3. Vodaphone allows direct warant-less wiretaps by governments to its customers. If you use this company, you may want to think carefully about whether or not you accept the loss of your privacy no matter what you think about the nature of your private conversations. Remember, if the US government can use the IRS to attack people who have pre-revisionist, pre-Obama views about the nature of law and the USA, then some other government can use the same machinery to attack you for yours, no matter how mainstream they may be now.

4. Pakistan Taliban ‘master bomber’ gunned down amid deadly infighting

(CNN) — A suicide bombing “mastermind” in the Pakistan Taliban has been gunned down and killed in the country’s northeastern tribal region, just days after a major faction in the militant group announced it was breaking away over ideological differences.

(I wonder what ideological differences they might have? What size rocks to use when stoning an adulteress? What size wall to throw on gay people?)

Thank you Wrath of Khan, Don L, M, and all. More to come. Sorry about that.

  1. BBC – Iraqi troops ‘repel militant attack on Samarra’

Witnesses and security sources said dozens of heavily armed militants attacked checkpoints and police stations on the outskirts of Samarra early on Thursday, before moving into the city

They also reportedly occupied Samarra’s two largest mosques and announced the “liberation” of the city via loudspeaker, urging residents to join their war against the government.

The army responded with helicopter strikes in which officials said about 80 insurgents died.

  2. Attack on south Yemen checkpoint leaves 14 dead (BBC, June 5, 2014)

“Fourteen people have been killed in an attack by suspected al-Qaeda militants in southern Yemen, officials say. The militants reportedly opened fire with machine-guns at an army checkpoint in Bayhan, in Shabwa province, at dawn. The interior ministry says eight troops and six tribesmen died. Initial reports said a civilian was among those killed. Meanwhile, the army said 40 soldiers and 500 militants had been killed since an offensive against al-Qaeda and its allies in the south began in April…”

  3. #4

When Mohammed was recruiting in Medina the argument he used was not Godliness, it was cold hard greed. He told his would-be followers that there was a lot of valuable stuff in the Mecca caravan and that they would be able to keep 80% of the swag for themselves if they could help him take it down. It all makes more sense when one thinks of the “Islamists” as a band of thieves rather than as a religious group.

One thing they never show in these gruesome videos from Syria, Iraq etc is the guy going through the dead people’s pockets and belongings and desk drawers and wall-safes. Remember, for Mohammed it was most definitely about the money. He liked raping beautiful 10/10 girls and stealing all the free money he could get his hands on. He also got a real kick out of cruelty and power…oh yeah, and vengeance. Mohammed loved his vengeance…

  4. Chris:

And this is why I think of sharia more as a ‘pirate’s code’ than a legal system and of mohamad as a brigand more than a ‘prophet’. In fact I refer to him, when I have to, as the Pirate Redbeard, as I believe he henna’d his beard red when he was jihading,

  5. Whats next? Well… Expect “them” to ask “us” to pay the “humanitarian” bill for this particular infiltration route, too.

Yemen migrant boat sinking is ‘worst this year’ – UN (BBC, June 6, 2014)

“The UN’s refugee agency reports that 62 people have died off Yemen’s coast, in what it describes as the worst sinking incident in the region this year. Sixty migrants from Somalia and Ethiopia and two Yemeni crew members drowned in the accident last weekend, the UNHCR said on Friday.

Every year thousands of Africans make the journey to Yemen in crowded boats.

Yemen is seen as a gateway to the Middle East or Europe but hundreds have died on the journey. “The victims were reportedly buried by local residents after their bodies washed ashore near the Bab El Mandeb area off Yemen’s coast,” the UNHCR said in a statement.

The incident brings the number of people who have been killed trying to make this particular crossing this year to 121, the agency said.

Many thousands have fled the Horn of Africa in recent years to escape poverty and war. The route to Europe via the Mediterranean Sea is also heavily used by migrants fleeing the Horn of Africa and, increasingly, refugees from the war in Syria.

From January to April, 42,000 migrants were detected on Mediterranean routes, with 25,650 of these crossing from Libya.”

  6. AL arabiya – Islamic prayers to be held at the Vatican

For the first time in history, Islamic prayers and readings from the Quran will be heard at the Vatican on Sunday,</b< in a move by Pope Francis to usher in peace between Israelis and Palestinians.

Holy See officials on Friday said the evening prayers would be a “pause in politics” and had no political aim other than to rekindle the desire for Israeli-Palestinian peace at the political and popular level, according to the Associated Press.

The Vatican will broadcast a live feed of the event to viewers across the world.

However, expectations for the event should be kept low, according to Rev. Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the custodian of Catholic Church property in the Holy Land.

[No-one should think] “peace will suddenly break out on Monday, or that peace is any closer,” AP reported him as saying.

  7. Prayer in Vatican – Sunday June 08 2014

As Father Lombardi explained, Peres and Abbas are scheduled to arrive at 18.15 to 18.30, entering through the Perugino gate and arriving in Santa Marta. The Pope will greet them separately at the entrance of Santa Marta, then have a brief conversation, first with one and then with the other. At about 18:45, the three will meet in the lobby of Santa Marta and where they will be joined by Patriarch Bartholomew, who will arrive in Rome the night before. Then, together, by car, the will go to the location of the prayer meeting. Pizzaballa will be present to assist in the meeting.

The place where the event will take place “is a beautiful triangular meadow that lies between the Casina Pio IV, the Academy of Sciences and the Vatican Museums. This triangle is oriented toward the dome of St. Peter. So it’s a very beautiful and interesting place in the Gardens, the encounter will take place between two tall hedges. “ The delegations will have already taken their seats, and the four main protagonists: the Pope, the two presidents and Patriarch Bartholomew, will then take up their positions in point of the triangle.

The prayer “will be an invocation of peace, and will be distinct from the point of view of the religious communities to which they belong.”

The Pope will be seated between the two presidents, with President Peres to his right and President Abbas to his left. The Patriarch will be seated in a distinct position nearby. Once they are all seated the moment of prayer will begin. There will be an introductory piece of music and a brief explanation of the event in English. There will then be three phases of prayer, following the chronological order of the three religions, that is, first Judaism, then Christianity and then Islam. The Jewish moment of prayer will have texts in Hebrew; the Christian texts in English, Italian and Arabic; the Muslim texts in Arabic. The program is ternary: the first prayer will give thanks for Creation, then for forgiveness, then for peace in all three moments of the three religions. There are some very simple musical interludes, orchestrated by Msgr. Palombella with the collaboration of musicians. At the beginning a string quartet will perform the String Quartet adaggio in B minor by Simon Baber; then, in later Hebrew moment of prayer there will be a clarinet and two violins with Jewish music on the theme of peace; the Christian moment will introduce a harp and a flute; in the Muslim moment of prayer there will be a violin accompanying, each religion using characteristic and suitable melodies to accompany the texts chosen for the prayers.

  8. Northern Ireland – Belfast – Pastor James McConnell questioned by police on morning he apologises for ‘unwittingly causing distress’ to Muslims with ‘satanic Islam’ comments

[…]The preacher is being investigated by the PSNI over a potential hate crime and was questioned for almost two hours on Friday.

[…]Mr McConnell’s church, the Whitewell Metropolitan Tabernacle in north Belfast, issued a “clarification statement” on Friday morning. He did not apologise for what he said in his sermon, but stated: “I had no intention of causing any offence or insulting any member of the Muslim community or to arouse fear or stir-up or incite hatred towards any member of the Muslim community.

“I wish to apologise publicly for any distress I may have unwittingly caused on my part.

“My sermon was drawing attention to how many followers of Islam have, regrettably, interpreted the doctrine of Islam as justification for violence. I have qualified my comments by reference to those who use their religion as justification for violence. As a preacher of the word of God, it is this interpretation of the doctrine of Islam which I am condemning.

“I abhor violence and condemn anyone, of any faith, who uses religion to justify it.”

[…]”I also will welcome any opportunity to attend at the Islamic Centre in Belfast in the near future.”
