1. This reportage of a murder in England is more curious for what isn’t said than what is. Do they now use ‘asphyxiation’ as the new code word for beheading? Or was this a normal personal murder? Something odd here and worth following.

6. I may as well go on record now on Turkey. It looks a lot like Egypt, Tunisia and all the other tard-spring countries did at this stage. Where the MB used people frustrated with a dictator to get them thrown out of office and then Ikhwan/Al Quaeda would slime in one way or another. Usually with US help. If I am right, then Obama will start getting vocal about Turkey’s handling of it and we will see the whole thing play out as usual. I am not married to this theory, but it looks and feels the same to me as the rest of the states which went all tardish after popular secular and democratic protests against governments widely seen as dictatorial.

  1. Somali al-Shabab leader Abdikafi Mohamed Ali ‘captured’ (BBC, June 5, 2013)
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-22783882
“The head of the Islamist militant group al-Shabab in Somalia’s north-eastern region of Puntland has been captured, an official has told the BBC. Puntland’s Security Minister, Khalif Isse, said Abdikafi Mohamed Ali was wounded in a raid at a militant safe house in the port city of Bossaso. A soldier was killed in the operation and the city is in lockdown as the hunt continues for other militants, he said. Al-Shabab, an al-Qaeda affiliate, has strong links with pirates in the area….”

  2. Iraq gunmen kill 14 people at fake checkpoint (BBC, June 5, 2013)
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-22782763
At least 14 people have been killed at a fake security checkpoint manned by gunmen in western Iraq, officials say. The checkpoint was reportedly set up along the main highway to Saudi Arabia, near the town of al-Nukhaib, in the predominantly Sunni province of Anbar. One report said those killed were all policemen; another identified them as soldiers and civilians from Karbala. They were stopped by the gunmen and appeared to have been executed, officials told the Associated Press…”

  3. I left the following comment at an earlier post on Turkey:

What you”re seeing here is nothing like what happened in Egypt or Libya, where pro-democracy advocates tried to overthrow dictators, but ended up with Islamists. Here the protests are aiming to put a stop to an Islamist state in-the-making, if Erdogan, who is already in power, has his way. Turkey is known for being a secular democracy, although the burden of Islam makes the society far from free. But at least it was heading in the right direction—until Erdogan was elected in 2002. Those you see here are most likely the young who’ve learned lots about freedom from the Internet, and those older secular Turks who want to stop Erdogan—perhaps they’ve lived in Europe or America and have tasted freedom Where are all the headscarved women? Nowhere in sight, apparently. That’s telling. Erdogan’s vision for Turkey suits them just fine, thanks.

    ………………………
I lived in Turkey for a while and have always felt that Turks are “on the edge.” I could see it in my young students, and could see it in the street. While on the surface they might have appeared accepting of police brutality, government censorship, the jailing of journalists, the curtailing of the military, and the constraints of Islam, apparently some have now found their voice. Erdogan pushed them just a bit too far.

  4. Turkish authorities arrest social media users; calls for Erdogan to resign continue (CNN, June 5, 2013)
    http://edition.cnn.com/2013/06/05/world/europe/turkey-protests/index.html
“… In a move likely to inflame the anger of Turkish protesters, authorities earlier arrested two dozen social media users on accusations of spreading false information about demonstrations sweeping the nation. Police detained 25 people and were searching for 13 more on accusations of using social media networks such as Twitter to spread false details about the anti-government protests and police reaction to them, according to the semiofficial Anadolu Agency news service….”

  5. Kinneddar: I agree with every word you said. Doesn’t change a thing. In Iran, Egypt, Tunisia and elsewhere the guiding hand of the Ikhwan was not seen. The useful idiots of the left and genuine liberals and people who actually wanted more freedom caused these countries to fall to islam because the chaos that ensued after they forced out the dictator allowed for the power vacuum to be filled by the most orgnized and ready group. In Iran and Egypt we saw it clearly. In some of the other states a more chaotic al-qaeda-Ikhwan group run it in a militia style.

  6. USA – Woman throws rocks, sicks dogs on local news reporter and it’s all CAUGHT ON VIDEO

An ABC6 crew was on assignment in Providence when they were assaulted in broad daylight. It started with a question that led to a violent response. The crew was on Public Street in Providence, attempting to get reaction from the mother of the teenage girl who was shot at a graduation party over the weekend.

Instead of declining to speak on-camera, Melissa Lawrence replied “OK, that’s good,” and then suddenly hurled a rock at ABC6 photographer Marc Jackson. The rock just missed the photographer’s head. The crew then started to leave, but Lawrence came out wielding a baseball bat. She then told her two dogs to attack.

  7. Russian police arrest Islamist militant who ‘planned Moscow attack’

RUSSIAN police detained the alleged head of a disbanded Islamist cell that had planned a series of attacks in Moscow, Russia’s counterterrorism agency said today.

Yulay Davlatbayev was arrested in Moscow’s Mytishchinsky district by special forces from the Federal Security Service, said the Federal Security Service, which released photographs of his arrest early on Thursday.

Putin has ordered security to be stepped up ahead of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, which will be held near the North Caucasus mountains where Islamist insurgents wage daily violence to turn the region in to an Islamic state.

Russian officials say Davlatbayev ran a cell of the Islamic Party of Turkestan, a group Russian police say they smashed in a shootout last month.

Officials said the group had been planning attacks in the capital Moscow, including on May 9 when Russia celebrates the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War Two.

The Anti-Terrorism Committee, which coordinates Russia’s counterterrorism efforts and reports directly to Putin, said Davlatbayev’s group had been to the Afghan-Pakistan border to train in explosives and had fought NATO forces in Afghanistan.

Police said they found explosives in the men’s apartment in the Moscow region city of Orekhovo-Zuyevo, and that Davlatbayev had evaded police by taking a job as a taxi driver in Moscow.

FSB Chief Alexander Bortnikov has warned that the Islamic Group of Turkestan is just as dangerous as Al Qaeda, however, some security analysts say its aims and reach are poorly understood.

Security analysts say the group may have ties with the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan which the United States has designated as a foreign terrorist organization. That group wants to establish an Islamic state in the former Soviet republic, which borders Afghanistan.

  8. UKRAINE – Hizb Ut-Tahrir Activists Rally In Crimea

SIMFEROPOL, Ukraine — Hundreds of activists of the Hizb ut-Tahrir Islamic organization have rallied in the city of Simferopol in Ukraine’s Crimea.

Some 1,500 demonstrators gathered to mark the 89th anniversary of the collapse of the Ottoman Caliphate.

The Ottoman Caliphate officially ceased to exist in 1924 after secular authorities in Turkey separated religion from state.

Crimea’s Prime Minister Anatolyy Mohylyov told RFE/RL that the organizers of the unsanctioned gathering will face administrative punishment.

He added, though, that his government cannot ban Hizb ut-Tahrir because such decisions can be made by the country’s parliament only.

Hizb ut-Tahrir is a London-based Sunni political organization that seeks to unite Muslim countries into an Islamic caliphate.

Some former Soviet republics have banned Hizb ut-Tahrir, branding its supporters as “extremists.”
