Dubai – Iran declared a day of national mourning on Wednesday after the death of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, who shared the Islamic Republic’s loathing for US “imperialism”.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who had forged a public friendship with Chavez characterised by lavish mutual praise, hugs and light-hearted moments, may attend Chavez’s funeral on Friday, state news agency IRNA reported.

The two men had sought closer ties between their geographically distant countries, although action on joint social and military projects announced in recent years has often lagged behind the rhetoric.

“Hugo Chavez is a name known to all nations. His name is a reminder of cleanliness and kindness, bravery … dedication and tireless efforts to serve the people, especially the poor and those scarred by colonialism and imperialism,” Ahmadinejad said.

“I offer my condolences to all nations, the great nation of Venezuela and his respected family over this tragic event,” he said in statement published on his official website.

Yes, but as far as we are aware, he never actually converted to Islam, and specifically Shia Islam, so as far as you’re concerned, Mr. Ahmedinejad, he’s burning in Hell anyway, isn’t he? Or maybe Allah has forgiven him just like Adolf Hitler.
Hey, but even the prophet Mo wasn’t sure of his own destiny…..so if Mo can’t get in paradise then I’m sure that Adolf and Hugo can’t, and that probably means you too, Ahmedinejad!
Oh to be a Muslim….. whichever way you look at it, you’re kind of fucked!

  2. Hugo Chavez ‘Died in Cuba and Venezuelans Mourned Empty Coffin

Venezuela’s late president Hugo Chavez died in Cuba, not in Caracas, and Venezuelans mourned an empty coffin during the seven-hour long funeral procession on Wednesday, according to Spanish website ABC.

Quoting unnamed military sources, the conservative newspaper – the third largest in Spain – claims that the president’s body was secretly transported from Cuba to a chapel in Fuerte Tiuna, a complex of the ministry of defence where the Military Academy is based.

The deception had a propaganda purpose, according to these sources – the Venezuelan government needed to hastily arrange a funeral procession, to show the weight of support for Chavez and his party, but couldn’t risk the real coffin being damaged.

“They wanted to show that there are a lot of people with a clear political interest, allowing people to even touch the coffin, the fake one, without compromising the physical integrity of the real one,” said the source.

According to ABC, Chavez died on Tuesday morning in Havana and his body was then transported to the aerial base of Generalisimo Francisco de Miranda in Caracas. Once there, the corpse was examined by the base medical centre and dressed in military uniform. On Wednesday, the body was kept in the underground base of the Military Academy.

After the popular procession, officials allegedly swapped the fake coffin with the real one, before the formal exhibition.

Scores of leaders from Latin American countries and other parts of the world are expected to attend Chavez’s funeral. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Cuban President Raul Castro are among more than thirty heads of state who will be present for the ceremony, which is to take place at 11:00 am local time (15:30 GMT).

After the ceremony, Chavez’s body will be taken to a military museum.

Vice-president Nicolas Maduro earlier said in a state television address that Chavez’s body will be embalmed and kept on permanent display much like communist leaders Lenin and Stalin.

More than two million followers have already paid their tributes to the socialist leader at a military academy.

  3. I’ve found an interesting vid from a colombian TV channel on youtube. It was posted on february 27, and it is told in it that Chavez became brain dead on december 30. He was allegedly disconected from the machines which were keeping him alive on February 23, but venezuelan authorities were very reluctant to publicly announce his death. This was declared by a former ambassador from Panama.

By the way, here is a photo of the person which may eventually succeed him: http://www.ntn24.com/noticias/nicolas-maduro-sera-82192

  4. And now it’s official: Chavez’s body will be embalmed and showed to the public in a Lenin-style mausoleum. A bolivian online newspaper published it 5 hours ago

  5. Let them weep cos’ at the end of the day – the king and the pawn will all go back into the same box or so they say anyway!
