  2. OT- Two Russian nuclear-armed bombers circled the western Pacific island of Guam this week in the latest sign of Moscow’s growing strategic assertiveness toward the United States.

The Russian Tu-95 Bear-H strategic bombers were equipped with nuclear-tipped cruise missiles and were followed by U.S. jets as they circumnavigated Guam on Feb. 12 local time—hours before President Barack Obama’s state of the union address.

Air Force Capt. Kim Bender, a spokeswoman for the Pacific Air Force in Hawaii, confirmed the incident to the Washington Free Beacon and said Air Force F-15 jets based on Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, “scrambled and responded to the aircraft.”

“The Tu-95s were intercepted and left the area in a northbound direction. No further actions occurred,” she said. Bender said no other details would be released “for operational security reasons.”

Defense officials said the bombers tracked over Guam were likely equipped with six Kh-55 or Kh-55SM cruise missiles that can hit targets up to 1,800 miles away with either a high-explosive warhead or a 200-kiloton nuclear warhead.

  4. OT- BULGARIA : Bulgarian Interior Minister Backs Expulsion of Hamas Delegation

Bulgarian Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov has defended the expulsion of a four-member Hamas delegation from the country earlier on Friday.

The four Palestinians were expulsed because of their membership in Hamas, Tsvetanov told reporters on Friday. Tsvetanov confirmed that that the Hamas representatives that visited Bulgaria were not on any list with persons banned from entering the EU.

He added that they were invited to Bulgaria by a Bulgarian citizen with a Palestinian origin who heads an NGO.

On Friday, it surfaced that the group of four Hamas members had been expelled from Bulgaria by the State Agency for National Security (DANS), after legally arriving on Wednesday. The group had arrived in Bulgaria at the invitation of the NGO Center for Global and Middle East Studies to participate in a conference, which was however cancelled after their visit was cut short.

The Bulgarian Foreign Ministry noted that the visit was not official.

Bulgarian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Vessela Tcherneva told The Jerusalem Post on Thursday that “Bulgaria is part of the EU politics as listing Hamas as a terror organization.

The curious case of Bulgaria and the secret Hamas visit

A raid by secret service officers on a number of hotel rooms today ended an extraordinary first visit to the European Union by Hamas. The delegation from the Palestinian organisation was deported by the Bulgarian government, which had earlier insisted it had no knowledge of Hamas’s presence in the country.

Confusion continued over the exercise in “guerrilla diplomacy” by Hamas, which has been proscribed as a terrorist organisation by the EU. As the departing group was driven to the airport, its members declared this was not the end of the affair. “There will be similar visits to foreign countries soon,” one of them promised.

The prospect of flying columns of Hamas officials arriving in Western European capitals unannounced caused bewilderment among diplomats.

[…]The Hamas delegation held that Western politicians were being too free with the T-word. “It is wrong to declare a country or movement ‘terrorist’ without hearing their point of view,” said Salah Bardawil, the delegation’s leader. “I hope that with this visit we will succeed in achieving some dialogue with the EU and this will be a door to improve our relations.”

Asked whether Hezbollah was behind the bombing of Israeli tourists, Mr Bardawil said: “We haven’t thought about this matter. It is of no concern to us and we have no opinion about it. We believe the investigation will reveal the truth. We are here to explain our point of view on the Palestinian issue. But we are happy to come to a people who are friendly to us.”

The fact that any such friendship did not extend to the Bulgarian government became apparent with the raid this morning.
