ANSAMED:

ANSAmed) – ANKARA, JANUARY 22 – The Turkish government is set to build 1,300 ‘Ottoman and Seljuq style’ police stations across the country, according to local press reports.

Ankara’s National Police Department has confirmed that works are already underway on the new buildings which are inspired by university studies of police stations during the Seljuq and Ottoman dynasties over 1000 years ago. Turkey’s Premier Recap Erdogan, often referred to as ‘The Sultan’, is a great admirer of the Ottoman period.

  1. @Jewel, Yep, and the Mehter Band will be playing Ceddin Deden as the Janissaries and Sipahis march towards Vienna again. (Third time’s a charm, huh?) We need a Jan Sobieski for our age.

  2. Death plot against Turkish pastor foiled

Last week a plot to assassinate a Turkish Christian pastor near Istanbul was foiled by the Turkish anti-terrorist police.

An undercover police investigation resulted in the arrest of 14 people on January 15. Three of these people were women, and two of them had been attending Izmit Protestant Church as members of the small, mostly Turkish congregation. During a raid of the suspects’ homes, police found photos of church attenders (including foreign Christian visitors), maps of Emre’s home and the church, details of church activities and Emre’s daily schedule, and even architectural layouts of the church. Two guns were also confiscated.

Pastor Emre Karaali, 33(…)is a native Turk who converted to Christianity and became pastor of the only Protestant church in the northwest province of Kocaeli.

Pastor Emre had received two death threats in the past year, and often passers by the church would hurl insults. The Hurriet Daily News of Istanbul reported that some Izmit residents were “annoyed” by recent passing out of fliers that invited people to attend last weeks’ celebrations. Some people even accused the church of missionary activities and of “aiming to detach local youth from Islam and bring them toward Christianity.”

[…]Information that the suspects had contacted a hit-man from eastern Turkey to carry out the assassination caused the police to make arrests quickly. However, Izmit anti-terrorist police were hesitant to give an official comment, as this is still an on-going investigation.

  3. German soldiers attacked in southern Turkey

ANKARA, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) — Seven German soldiers were attacked Tuesday in the southern Turkish province of Hatay by a group of activists who oppose the deployment of Patriot missile system in the country, local newspaper Today’s Zaman reported on its website.

The seven German soldiers are in Iskenderun town of Hatay as part of the NATO mission for deploying the missile system on the Turkish-Syrian border.

The soldiers were besieged on their way to a bazaar in the center of Iskenderun by 26 activists from the Turkey Youth Union ( TGB), who tried to throw sacks on their heads, said the report.

The soldiers escaped from the attackers with the help of local people and were not hurt, said the report, adding that they took shelter in a jewelry shop.

After police arrived at the scene, the soldiers were taken to their hotel by security forces.

The group of activists continued their protest and chanted various slogans.

“We will not allow Turkey to be the center for attacks in the Middle East. We will not allow American and NATO soldiers to travel freely in this country,” the head of the group said.

“Whether it was German or American soldiers whose heads we put sacks on, it does not matter. All of them are NATO soldiers,” he said.

After a brief scuffle with the group, Turkish riot police detained the 15 activists, including TGB leader Ilker Yucel.
