LONDON – A British judge on Monday sentenced a woman he called a “devoted and loving mother” to at least 17 years in prison for beating her son to death after he failed to memorize passages from the Qur’an.
A jury at Cardiff Crown Court in Wales convicted 33-year-old Sara Ege last month of murdering 7-year-old Yaseen and burning his body to destroy the evidence.
Judge Wyn Williams said Ege beat Yaseen repeatedly with a stick over several months, causing internal injuries.

JOHOR BARU: A non-governmental organisation has lodged a police report against a Facebook user who allegedly blasphemed Islam with obscene words to describe Prophet Muhammad and the Rukun Iman (Tenets of Faith)
Persatuan Pemuda Puteri Malaya Bersatu Negeri Johor (Perimau) claimed the user who went under the name “Adlin Binti Abd Jalil (Makcik Hajjah Sitt Al-Wuzara)” had allegedly posted degrading remarks about the religion for the past year.
One of the postings on Dec 26 allegedly described the prophet as someone who was deliberately abandoned by his mother.
The post also allegedly used expletives to describe Allah.
This posting received 1,000 comments and was shared by 249 users.
Checks on FB on the user’s information section revealed that Adlin, also believed to be known as Makcik Hajah Sitt Al Wuzara, that she is allegedly 29 years old from Kuala Lumpur, but whose current address is in Norrkoping, Sweden.
On her FB photo section, there was a copy of an identification card purportedly belonging to Adlin. Perimau president Mohd Ridhwan Othman said the postings were unacceptable and disrespectful of Islam and the country’s laws.
“The postings can cause disunity among Muslims.
“If we are not careful in handling this, it could harm the belief of future generations on Islam and what it stands for.”
Ridhwan urged the government, Islamic Development Department (Jakim) and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to take action against the user.
Johor Baru Utara district police chief Superintendent Beh Eng Lai confirmed a report had been lodged and said police were investigating the matter.
