Egypt’s Morsi takes on sweeping powers

Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi has decreed constitutional changes granting himself far-reaching powers. He also fired the country’s chief prosecutor, a move likely to cause further conflict with the judiciary.

The Egyptian leader on Thursday decreed, among other constitutional amendments, that all decisions he had taken since taking office in June could not be appealed in court or by any other authority.

A constitutional declaration read out on television by spokesman Yasser Ali stated that Morsi “can issue any decision or measure to protect the revolution.”

“The constitutional declarations, decisions and laws issued by the president are final and not subject to appeal,” the declaration continued.

Morsi also granted immunity both to the constituent assembly drafting a new Egyptian constitution and to the upper chamber of parliament from any possible court decisions to dissolve them. Both bodies are dominated by Islamist allies of the president.

“Morsi today usurped all state powers and appointed himself Egypt’s new pharaoh. A major blow to the revolution that could have dire consequences,” ElBaradei wrote on his Twitter account on Thursday.

Out of the frying pan and straight into the fire! I wish the Egyptians well, they’re certainly going to need it.

  2. Richard says:

Morsi is doing what Obama wants to, and from some reports is getting ready to try.

Don’t know DW so clicked on the NYTimes and there is is on the homepage.

We’ve heard that “protect the revolution” line before. It bodes ill.

I can’t tell you how many people have said I was basically a right wing, McCarthyite nut job for saying literally from day one that this is exactly what was going to happen.

Here are a particularly good likeness of Egypt’s new President For Life.

  4. DP111 says:

Why should Obama be worried as Obama himself ignores and bypasses congress, as well as appointing unaccountable tsars by executive orders.

  5. Truthiocity says:

This is the third time in a row that a dust up with Israel has directly preceeded a powergrab by the Islamists, and at least the second by Morisi alone.

The first happened in the run up to a significant vote that was to determine who would have power to construct Egypt’s constitution. Right after the dust up there were masive rallies in Egypt aimed at developing anti Israel jingoism. Jingoism/nationalism etc increases the proportion of voters who vote conservative. In Egypt that meant The Muslim Brotherhood and the Salafists.

The second was a cross border raid that resulted in Morsi immediately purging secularists from the higher eschelons of the army.

    and now this third instance.

I’m disgusted that Barry, who is supposed to be a “leader” of the free world supports this despot. May he pay dearly in this life or the next for his betrayal of Israel. Evil is afoot and there are traitors everywhere.

  7. Richard says:

DP you are right about Obama, we no longer have the run of law and the way people are acting we really don’t have any constitutional rights anymore.

  8. Chris Jones says:

This is no surprise at all. Who do they think the Muslim Brotherhood is, anyway? Why don’t the CIA and the FBI and the Media and the Government of the United States of America seem to know anything at all about who these people are? There is no organization on Earth more dangerous than The Brotherhood. They are the Nazi High Command. The only reason they said they would forswear violence is because they were afraid of being physically tortured by the secret police of Hosni Mubarak. There is nothing “peaceful” about them, just the snarling submission of a beaten dog. Now that they’ve won, isn’t it obvious what is going to happen? Why are we trapped in this silly false narrative? We’re in a canoe heading toward a waterfall and nobody will listen to the warning. Morsi’s grab for power today was as predictable as winter following fall – he is Hitler in 1933. Soon there will be a night of the long knives, just you wait and see. And as for those pro-democracy useful idiots who took to the streets with their protest signs – he will simply start killing them until they are all dead or too terrified to speak. The situation in Egypt could not possibly be worse than it is, and that has been abundantly obvious from the first days of the Arab Spring.

  9. Richard says:

Chris they don’t know anything because our leaders don’t want them to know anything, they have fired all of the people who were teaching the military and law enforcement the facts about Islam, they would rather appease the Moslems then face the truth.
