The British child brides: Muslim mosque leaders agree to marry girl of 12… so long as parents don’t tell anyone

British Muslim mosque leaders are agreeing to carry out secret marriages with child brides as young as 12 in the UK, it emerged today.

In an undercover investigation, a Shi’te mosque leader agreed to marry a 12-year-old girl so long as she was a willing participant.

A Sunday Times journalist visited the Husaini Islamic Centre in Peterborough – the ‘first Shi’te mosque in the whole of Europe’ – posing as the father of a 12-year-old girl.

According to the newspaper, the reporter was told by Imam Mohamed Kassamali that ‘under sharia [Islamic law] there is no problem’ in marrying a 12-year-old.

But while he declared Islamic Law dictated a girl should see ‘her first sign of puberty at the house of her husband’, he admitted they would all get in to trouble if she went to police saying she was forced into the marriage.

  1. This is both sick and to be expected, it is probably occurring in all nations but needs to be fought, and every time it can be proven all involved including the Imam needs to be sent to the pen.

  2. I don’t believe the law has changed, the legal age is still 16 and whatever age, formal notice of marriage must be given in person to the Superintendent Registrar by one or both partners. A purely religious Islamic ceremony is not a legal marriage and still requires a legal ceremony usually in a registry office, so a child marriage would be illegal here but would the folk involved in child marriages be bothered about the legal side so long as religious requirements were served? I doubt it.

We operate double standards which give special privileges to muslims because of the official view that any marriage that is legally valid in the foreign country in which it took place, is valid under the law here too.

So while we must live according to the law of the land, Muslims who pop over to Pakistan to get married don’t. Muslims are allowed to flout the laws and marry multiple wives in Pakistan and bring them back here nice and legal, while non-Muslims would face imprisonment for bigamy

The solution is to insist that Muslims or anyone else who wishes to engage in practices which are illegal here, should refrain from coming. If they do come and they do engage in illegal practices, they ought to suffer the exact same penalties anyone else would.

Sharia law is allowed to trump British law, through these double standards and the application of one law for Muslims, and another law for the rest of us.
